As a former Commander of the 143rd MP Company (1997-1999), this bare-knuckle blow-by-blow account of how my former soldiers performed so magnificently in Iraq made me proud, made me laugh, and even made me cry. Colonel (Ret.) Stephan Picard Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran

From April 2003 to April 2004, the primary mission of 143rd Military Police Company, a Connecticut National Guard unit, was to recruit, train and prepare an Iraqi Police Force. From training for desert conditions in the dead of winter without the appropriate gear to driving through the night trying to find Baghdad with pieces of a map puzzle and finally to entering war zones without an adequate supply of soldiers, weapons or ammo, the 143rd Military Police Company did what they could, in spite of it all.

Master Sergeant Marc Youngquist provides a firsthand account of the hair-raising challenges and heart-pounding hardships the 143rd endured in an effort to achieve their objective. Youngquist tells the story of these unsung American heroes, men and women who have served our country with limited resources and support.

If you have ever wondered what it means when politician s use the term boots on the ground, this military history of just one company s experiences will provide you with an eye-opening narrative, putting you in the thick of the action with these brave men and women.

Whether you re interested in military history, American heroes, the Middle East in general or the Iraq war history specifically, or you simply enjoy a riveting story of bravery and dedication, The 143rd in Iraq is sure to please.

As a former Commander of the 143rd MP Company (1997-1999), this bare-knuckle blow-by-blow account of how my former soldiers performed so magnificently in Iraq made me proud, made me laugh, and even made me cry. It kept me on the edge of my seat, wanting to read the next page, and wishing I were there with them every step of the way. Knowing MSG (retired) Youngquist as I do, this detailed and, at times, disturbing, account of the obstacles the 143rd MP Company faced is the gritty truth as only a soldier s NCO would tell it. To the soldiers of the 143rd: Well done and welcome home. I am grateful for this chronicle of your service, and proud of each and every one of you! Colonel (Ret.) Stephan Picard Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran

MSG Youngquist has again provided invaluable service to our nation with this book. His ability to relate personnel, equipment and training to mission requirements makes The 143rd in Iraq a must read for military professionals and civilian leaders alike. MSG Youngquist s real life experiences accurately describe the challenges leaders face today. I wish I had had this book when I was teaching in ROTC.

When America goes to war, she sends her serving sons and daughters into harm s way for the protection of her people and the security of the nation. In doing so, she sends the strongest of the faithful, her volunteers, the people who have the hearts of lions, who leave their homes and family for the greater good of us all. And when America goes to war, she calls and asks, Who will go? Marc Youngquist, a former marine and serving National Guard trooper put up his hand and said, I will. Marc has written of his Connecticut Military Police National Guard unit as they deployed and saw action in Iraq in 2003 and 2004. His is a telling story that readers rarely see the gritty clear-eyed truth that includes the chaos of organization, the apathy of command staff, the lack of critical need-to-have equipment, and the sometimes broken-down/obsolete vehicles, weapons, communications, adverse weather and health threats even clothing necessary to do the job. Marc writes of this and more, not in complaint or anger, but as it is and what he and his fellow MP Unit still accomplished in an active and always dangerous combat zone. Every American owes a measure of gratitude and respect for our military. Every American should read Marc Youngquist's account of our citizen soldiers and their missions not only overcoming the challenge of a sometimes faceless enemy that uses buried and roadside car bombs, snipers, and guerilla warfare tactics to kill Americans, but how they prevailed and met the call of duty, In Spite of It All. --Bruce W. Tully Special Agent In Charge (Ret.) Senior Foreign Service Diplomatic Security Service United States Department of State

Although I spent my time with the 143rd in Iraq sitting behind a desk shuffling paper, I am still immensely proud of the time I spent with them. Master Sergeant Youngquist does an outstanding job of recounting the events, trials and tribulations the unit went through as we prepared for deployment, our time in Iraq and our return home. Some of the stories I experienced firsthand, some I heard about and others I was hearing for the first time. The humor, sadness and bravery the 143rd went through is a must read for not only military personnel, but civilians as well. I had a previous deployment under my belt before joining the 143rd and have had two since leaving them. These three deployments were spent with a Military History Detachment. As a member of a MHD, I had the chance to interview and document the daily activities of hundreds of Soldiers all across Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. No single unit I covered was more professional or did their job better than the 143rd. My only regret as a member of the unit was not covering them as a military historian. Thankfully, this book tells their story. Although I only met MSG Youngquist shortly before we left for Iraq, I can tell you he was respected across the board. What one individual has labeled as “complaining”, is actually a senior NCO doing what he is supposed to do, looking out for his troops. MSG Youngquist refused to accept the status quo, and fought to get his troops what they deserved and/or needed, whether it was equipment, needed time off or awards. Now that I am a senior NCO, I’ve tried to incorporate the lessons I learned from MSG Youngquist.

I found this book to be very insightful despite the bureaucracy the 143rd had to overcome. A meaningful read that gets to many of the core of the issue in this part of the world. From the late 60's enlisting into the Marine Corp to the 2000's in the Army National Guard, Marc thank you for your service!

    By Kathy Feeney

A boy climbs out the back window of his family’s vehicle as it approaches a checkpoint in Iraq. Brandishing a toy gun he points the weapon at stunned American soldiers. Slightly smaller than an AK-47, the child’s toy chillingly resembles an actual assault rifle.

What sounds like a major movie scene is simply a sample of the countless and compelling recollections by Marc Youngquist in “The 143rd in Iraq,” (Green Frog Publishing, 2015).

Youngquist served as a military police (MP) officer with the 143rd Military Police Company of the Connecticut Army National Guard in western Baghdad, Iraq from 2003 to 2004. With than more 40 years of experience in the military, law enforcement and special investigations, Youngquist earned a master’s degree in Criminal Justice and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

His book is a behind-the-scenes story of the challenges and triumphs shared by Youngquist and his 143rd team members during a mission to recruit and train an Iraqi police force. Along with excellent photographs, Youngquist’s chronicle transports his readers on the important and historic mission of a company of Connecticut Yankees in Iraq.

Overall I liked the 143 in Iraq and found it to be an enjoyable read. The author as a career military vet obviously had a great grasp of the subject matter he was writing about and that came through throughout the book. The book follows the exploits of the 143rd military police unit of the Connecticut National Guard as they form up, deploy, and eventually return home from the conflict in Iraq during the 2nd invasion in the early to mid- 2000's. While including all of the basic, pertinent information (often in a diary-type format) about their day-to-day activities in Iraq the author was also able to inject some much needed humor about how they most often had to battle the incompetencies and ridiculousness of the military bureaucracies that were working against them almost as strongly as the enemy. I would definitely recommend picking this book up as a knowledgeable and humorous read about an insider's view of the second conflict in Iraq.

What I appreciated most about this work was its connection to the history and reality of its setting. Also compelling was how sane people managed to live and at least partially adapt to an environment that was, to most of us, incomprehensible and not sane.

It is definitive for its subject, and therefore cannot be jingoistic or sugar coated. A world that most of us will thankfully never experience is described, although the human and administrative failings are transposable to things most of us have seen.

How good people deal with difficulty is also story many will relate to, as is the too common story of imperfect and sometimes failed leadership. This is a world where the author, and his fellow soldiers, lived. Some died. Many were injured. All were impacted. Most of those who were there will live with these impacts for the rest of their lives.

The reader will also see both perseverance and endurance. In that environment, this is a triumph. I was enthralled by this story of those who succeeded, “in spite of it all.”
