Brynn Marshall is a little lost. Dropping out of med school made her the black sheep of the family and now she’s floating around LA trying to find a sense of purpose. When she falls down on her luck, her best friend - indie musician Noah Lyman - refuses to let her wallow. After all, he’s just got his big break: co-writing with a megastar!
When Savannah enlists Noah to help her break out of country music and make a name for herself for once and for all, what better way to do it than to spend the Winter in her secluded vacation home in the woods of Vermont? And what better way for Noah to help out a friend than to pretend he’s bringing along his wife?
After all, what could possibly go wrong?
Book one in the Grace Notes trilogy is a secret crush, forced proximity, friends to lovers, slow burn sapphic romance

About the author

Ruby Landers lives in Meanjin (Brisbane) Australia. As you’re reading this, she is either typing a million daydreamy words a minute, giving someone a thousand-yard stare while secretly working out a plot twist, having a deep conversation with anyone four-legged, bargaining with an expert toddler negotiator, or dreaming of quitting her day job. Either way, there’ll be coffee.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt's taken me a minute to review this book b/c life got busy but this book stuck with me. This is an incredible debut novel from Ruby Landers. I'm honestly in awe that this is a debut. When I first read the synopsis about a lesbian "fake marriage" to her male bestie, I wasn't really sure I was in the mood for that kind of story but I'm oh so glad that I jumped in. This book made me laugh, made me cry, and made me so frustrated I was ready to throw things across the room. I'm so lucky I had a friend reading this at the same time (@Lez_be_readin_ya - check out her review too) because I NEEDED someone to talk to about this book. Landers had so many feelings bubbling up out of my chest that I couldn't function, literally, for a whole day while I devoured this book. This is an ANGSTY SLOW BURN NOVEL. When I say slow burn, bundle up kids, because we're watching this fire start from the woodchopping stage all the way through to the blaze of this sapphic fire. It's so freaking good.
Savannah and Brynn are such incredible characters. Their magnetic pull to each other is so incredibly strong. There's something about celebrity romances for me right now - I'm all in. I can't seem to get enough of the behind-the-scenes storylines. Landers did an amazing job with everything from the songwriting sessions to the recordings to the tour - it felt so authentic every step of the way.
I adored how Brynn was with Savannah's son. He was such a light for Savannah and a wonderful connection between the two MC's.
For me, this book was a romance, yes, but it was also about healing. Healing childhood traumas and healing wounds from a relationship that was nothing like we thought it was. I really valued the healing journey that each of these characters took together and apart. Landers took an interesting approach to boundaries and respect that you don't often see in the genre and romance. She took a chance and it absolutely paid off, in my opinion. It was a refreshing take on space and forgiveness that was heartwrenching to read but also felt very necessary and healthy.
I'm beyond ready for the next two installments of the Grace Notes. This book was just absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves a slowburn romance novel. This was such a refreshing unique read for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this book so fast…I had to see what came next! What started out as a harmless little white lie, turned into a potentially life altering bad decision. Read this book if you like a good love story or you’ve had to live through a bad break up to find not only your true love but your true worth! It is worth your time.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this read a great deal. I wasn’t sure it would hold my interest initially because I’m not a county music fan. Yet, the author has a relevant and contemporary style. A standout is the portrayal of bipoc characters and queer characters that is honest and respectful. The storyline is captivating and thoughtful. The author also knows how to insert a child into a storyline without bogging down the romance aspect. It is an artful delineation that is executed well here. The use of secondary characters in a way that is not disruptive to the primary characters and plot is difficult to achieve, but not for this author in this book. Angst for angst sake is so cringe, just stop already those who do it. A lesson could be learned from this author because honestly, my initial thought was ‘oh no here we go.’ The lie was deceivingly simple, surely an entire plot cannot be built around it I thought. I was wrong. The artful way the characters are drawn together, grow together and ultimately merged magnified that simple lie and when the blow up came, it made all the sense in the world. Bravo! I look forward to the next book. Oh, I deducted a star simply because I prefer spice and it’s all the way at the end of the book and not enough for two characters that had such chemistry to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am so thrilled that I discovered Ruby Landers-- she might be one of my new fave authors. Falls from Grace is the first book in her series (the other two are coming out later this year) and it was a really fun, engaging read that I couldn't put down.
Savannah Grace is newly split from her cheating no-good ex-husband, who was also the other half of their popular country music duo. She's trying to launch a solo career, but finding songwriting inspiration almost impossible. So she invites Noah Lyman, an indie musician, to come to her Vermont getaway and help co-write her new songs.
Brynn Marshall has recently flunked out of med school and is currently lifeguarding in LA while feeling very directionless. Her best friend, Noah, offers to bring her along on his songwriting trip to give her some much needed space and time to to figure out what to do with her life. The only catch? She needs to pose as Noah's wife in order to justify coming along.
This story is a slow burn (emphasis on the slow, here!) that was still very satisfying to read. It admittedly dragged a little in the first act, but things did pick up in the second half, and by the end I was holding on for dear life. I really enjoyed the setting, and getting to see glimpses into Savannah's life as a music star who has so much materially, but is still missing genuine connection in her life. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that this story had a lot of really interesting twists and turns and a very satisfying ending.
Definitely will be reading the next books in this series, and probably anything else that Ruby Landers writes! This is an incredible debut novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSavannah Grace is at the top of the country music stars in Nashville. Then, her marriage explodes when her cheating husband gets caught by the press one too many times. With her son Tucker she moves to her house in Vermont to rebuild her life and career. Brynn Marshall is a failed medical student who flunked out just before graduation. A recovering alcoholic and failed suicide attempt add to her trauma. When her best friend Noah Lyman is contracted to work with Grace on building her career beyond country music, he offers her the chance to accompany him as his fake wife. What could go wrong. A wonderful Sapphic and LGBTQ story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brynn & Savannah
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’ve read quite a few sapphic romance novels set in and around the world of music, a favourite storyline of mine, & I must say that ‘Falls From Grace’ is right up there with the very best, not quite reaching number one, but really close. A very well written, very enjoyable story featuring wonderfully real MCs. It is a complex story that I’ve found hard to explain in a review, but just to say it does involve a unique ‘fake marriage’ trope that causes lots of confused feelings & heartbreak along the way. The author goes into great detail about the whole creative process involved in making music, from songwriting, recording, touring, record deals, music press reviews & all these aspects are essential to the storyline and I think that’s what helps give this book its authenticity. The romantic side of the story is beautifully done, even the 3rd act breakup is totally believable & essential to the drama, making this a slow burn worth waiting for when things get spicier towards the end. The first in a trilogy of novels, I can highly recommend this book & look forward to continuing the series and hopefully learning more about what happens next to Brynn & Savannah.
