About the author

Hey! Tom Watts here. If you're reading this then you've either read one of my books or you’re thinking about doing it, and I want to say thanks either way.
I write low-stakes fantasy books that offer people a little of that important thing we call escapism, and I might have what you’re looking for.
Do you want to become a master craftsperson and live in a small, sunny village full of taverns and cafes? Then I have the story for you! Try my book, ‘Small-Town Crafter: the Artificer’s Apprentice.’
Or maybe you want to build a whole town from scratch right on top of untouched land, together with a couple of good friends. If that sounds good, then I’ve got something you’ll enjoy! Check out, ‘Welcome to Blade’s Rest.’
So, those are a couple of my books. As for me, well, I live in a little village with my wife and three dogs. When I’m not writing then I’m reading, and when I’m not doing that I’ve usually got a small schnauzer trying to get my attention.
Thanks for stopping by my author page. Make sure you press ‘follow’ so that you can be the first to find out when I release a new book.
Finally, If you try one of my books, then I'd like to wish you happy reading. Hope you enjoy visiting one of my fictional towns for a while.
Nice to meet you,
Tom.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025This is about leveling up but not adventures but how a village level to town, the city and so on. It is different from mostlitRPG. The story and characters are fun, interesting, and more real to life. A good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2022When I finished this book I actually checked to see if this book and one other I had read recently were by the same author. It turned out that the two books were from different authors, but both had similar foundations.
This tale has a very basic foundation. Supposedly the main character has been hired to generate content for an online MMORPG. He'll do this in game with tools that the developers supply him. In many ways its a standard LitRPG in that there are levels and looting and monsters.
Where this book tries to be different is that the goal of the main character is simply to build a town. And he's decided to try to build one that will be a relaxing waypoint for adventurers who happen to wander by.
Its an interesting idea, and if I had no read a similar book a few weeks earlier I might rate this one a bit higher, but the problem is that because of the passive nature of the tale there wasn't much emotional investment. There also isn't a lot of good character interaction. The hero is part of a 3 person team, but the other 2 both quickly turn to adventuring. One roams the countryside killing monsters and claiming she's "protecting" the growing town. The other was an outdoors type in real life and turns to herbalism and alchemy, only returning to the growing town to make potions in the workshop our hero eventually builds for his friend.
Its still a good tale, but the feeling that I'd read it before dragged it down for me. If you are looking for something wildly different from other books in the LitRPG genre, this might not be for you. But if you want a solid LitRPG with some town-building rather than all dungeon raiding. This could be your book.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2023A book, about a guy in the "real world" working in a fantasy world in virtual reality.
This was a fun book to read. Lots of neat ideas and characters. It did a good job introducing the world and hooking me into reading the series.
What was weird is that some of my favorite characters aren't even "real". They are NPCs in Josh's video game. And Josh and the other players often treat them as just NPCs, reminding us that Blade's Rest is not a "real" fantasy world.
Like I said, this is a very meta book.
One thing that I do like, that I hope does not change as the series progresses, is the Blade and Shield game mechanic that you can't attack NPCs. And there is no real PVP. It forces good behavior and encourages non-violent solutions to conflict. What a great idea!
Read every day and read for fun!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2023I really enjoyed this story. I like stories where the characters create and build things. The story isn't about life and death or epic adventures or high stakes, just some players working together to build a town and a community. It is my go-to book when I need my mind to relax from the day-to-day stress. I did notice some strange things in the story however, some of the NPC's in the game appear to be more than what they should be. I am looking forward to seeing how that play's out in the next book. (There IS a next book, right? And soon? Hint, hint)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2024The story itself is interesting and unique in that it focuses solely on building a town. The writing is decent, though there are a great many errors and spelling issues. The reason for only getting 3 stars is there are some blatant storyline concerns; like a certain female character that is hired to work, and instead refuses to share ‘company assets’, only wants to do her own thing and gets angry if she has to share…considering you are being paid to do a job, those assets belong to your employer, not a selfish girl. Another primary character works only how he feels like, and only when he feels like it, taking off and disappearing for hours.
If you are creating a story where people are hired by a company to work, and have these sorts of behavior, it stops making sense. Who has ever worked for a company where people goof off and don’t work, while the one person who does everybody else’s work picks up the slack for the rest of the paid staff? All of us. Which means we all know that we wouldn’t just smile and accept doing the work of others, while they goofed off and played a game. Not to mention the potential lawsuits from same.
This leaves the book stilted. Missing its potential by utilizing a work environment that would be considered ripe for employee discontent.
Add the errors, words being jumbled, incorrectly spelled or missing altogether, and this books sits at a solid 3 stars. A confusing nonsensical story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2022I don't play dungeon games because they are just basically fighting. LitRPG is not completely fighting, but there is a lot of it. No so in this book. It is mainly building and learning. A delicious change of pace.
The writing is good, good grammar, and flows well. The MC is interesting. I wouldn't mind playing this sort of game on my console. No Man's Sky is the closest with a lot of travel & building.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rarebit of Virtual Reality
Tom Watts has levelled up and created an amusing and inviting world of low violence, warm fires, cosy snugs, and first class cheffery within the hamlet of Blade's Rest.
A great cast of characters come together to build a new settlement from the dirt up, learning the necessary skills along the way. For anyone that has played any MMORPG then this is like voyeur gold.
Heading out now to see if Bryp has book 2 in stock!

5.0 out of 5 stars good
Yeah I enjoyed this book, the world building was interesting, the plot was good and the characters were fun. It was also a good length not too long but long enough to be enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly pleasant read.
Apart from a few errors, forgive my OCD, a surprisingly good read. The characters are fun and the overall story is quite a pleasant change from all the dungeon raiding and to be honest I quite enjoyed the progress. Only negative so far was that there wasn’t more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything it promises
This is a fun light book for people that like the Town building genre and reads itself quite quickly. While it has it's weaknesses and doesn't have every second the twists and turns of the millennium it delivers what it promises and especially the interesting/fleshed out npc characters are the highlight of this book.
