Exile: An Epic Fantasy Adventure Romance (A Dance of Fire and Shadow Book 5) Kindle Edition
Bandits prey on cities and farmsteads, corsairs prowl the high seas.
Ariel has earned her place with the elite Mage-warriors of the Eldrin, sworn to protect King and country––but power comes with a cost. The Elementals who can bestow dragonfire and ice-skills are wild and unpredictable, focused on their own long-term goals.
But now the sinister power behind the war is once more taking shape and form, the strength and skill of the Eldrin will be needed to lead the resistance.
For Ariel, life has become complicated. Visions of the distant threat haunt her dreams, her sister treads a precarious path as royal concubine and bodyguard, her Elemental ally seems to have gone rogue––and the love of her life has ended their relationship.
If only she can control the wild power inside her to defeat the raiders…
Then maybe she can protect her sister from the schemes of influential conspirators––and maybe even persuade Marin they can be reunited when the fighting is over…
Elf, dragon, wolf, and a mysterious Mage-warrior weave a dangerous path in this fantasy adventure-romance epic from Jay Aspen.

About the author

Jay is a fantasy and sci-fi author from the wild Welsh borders, who loves weaving her (sometimes hair-raising) experiences of extreme sports and travel adventures into both contemporary and imagined worlds. With a blend of fast-paced plots and interesting, compelling characters, these sagas bring to life first-hand experiences that are sometimes stranger than fiction itself.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2024More challenges, more devastating loss, more imaginative characters.
I found Jay Aspen by mistake and I am so glad I did. She reminds me of Jeff Wheeler with her creativity and gift of storytelling.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2024The fifth book in the series and it still kept me intrigued. Too often, after a few books into a series, I can anticipate what will happen and my interest is lost. Not so with A Dance of Fire and Shadow. This is the first series by Jay Aspen I have read. I am impressed that the story continues to keep me in its world.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2023It's so easy to get drawn into the story and lives of these characters. They are so real, as is the world they inhabit. Like us, Ariel struggles with the temptation to do something wrong for the right reason. The book alludes to a past bond between Ariel and a dragon, but goes into more detail about the bond between Marin and a wolf. You can't read about their relationship without experiencing a strong desire to forge a similar bond with such a beautiful and powerful creature. I haven't read the series that came before this one, it isn't necessary to understand and enjoy this series, but I want to learn more of the backstory. I'm looking forward to future installments in this new series, but also going back and reading the series that came before.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2023This was a fast-paced book and I'm eager to find out what happens next in the sequel.
This picks up shortly after A Dance of Fire and Shadow books end, so if you have read that series you will see familiar characters. No worries if you haven't read that - the backstory is revealed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A world of love and loyalty set against a dark threat
Mage-warrior Ariel is coming into her full powers and yet still wrestling with the temptation to disobey orders more often than she probably should. Set against the background of a land in chaos after a devastating invasion, the story launches in to a series of mysterious and deadly plots made more complex by a central character with her own ideas and priorities – not to mention a powerful Elemental ally like Shadow who may have gone rogue in a bid to reclaim his ancient territory.
The romance in the story is similar to the aspect I liked in the Outlander series, where it deals with the off and on tensions of an ongoing romance instead of the usual first-meeting story in most books. Add to that the need to find space between the threat of war and attacks by conspirators, and that uncertainty keeps you guessing all the way through. The tension builds as these loyal friends try to deal with the dangers and plots, finding new ways to work together and support each other. The deep sense of trust in the face of danger makes a change from stories where characters keep getting distracted with arguments.
The wolf and dragon characters are as interesting and complicated as the Elves and Elementals. Each has talents and priorities that demand a deep understanding from anyone hoping to work with them against a common foe. The encounter with the dragon brought a promise that there will be more of him further into the series. I hope so. Maybe a kind of ‘slow-burn’ build-up suitable for a fiery Elemental.
A fast-paced yet relaxing read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent fantasy adventure in a parallel land
Really enjoyed Exile, once I'd picked up the characters from the previous series. Exile gave more detail and background to the characters and the 'countries' and their reasons for being at war/peace. And a seriously nasty baddy. Once the journey got going and the adventure began I enjoyed it more and found I read faster and suddenly it had finished and I downloaded the next one.
I would suggest readers start with the earlier series "A Dance of Fire and Shadow" as otherwise they may wonder what is all going on with mages, elementals and "the Eldrin" as Exile (and so this series) does assume a little prior knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling Epic Fantasy, a great read.
Plenty of action and intrigue, conspiracies and love-interest. It's set in a land balanced precariously on the brink of chaos in the ravaged aftermath of war – while the action follows the adventures of a small band of elite warriors who still hold to their principles of loyalty and justice. It's interesting to see when adverse situations force them to cross that line – or not. Dealing with raiders is dangerous but straightforward, but Ariel soon has to face the palace conspiracies that threaten both her sister and the whole kingdom. The tension developed well throughout the book, as the distant threat in the east is gradually revealed as the secret source of the conspirators' power, as well as the tension in Ariel's relationship with Marin, so passionate, yet constantly torn apart by the demands of war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich fantasy with a fascinating baddie
A wonderful read. The world building is sumptuously evocative - so evocative you can almost smell the spices.
The main characters are well drawn and appealing, but one of the novel's strongest points is the deeply flawed antagonist - the demon shepherding Ashkar. I found myself propelled through the pages to discover what happens to him

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced, action with a dose of romance and political intrigue
Some glimpses of a great super villain, plenty of medium tier bad guys to propel the action throughout and some really good relationships between the good guys that make them seem more down to earth and given them a reason to be fighting back.
A good mix of action, fantasy and political manoeuvring.
