What an excellent book! Detailed, step-by-step guide on making you an effective and inspirational speaker - covering all the points around getting over your fear, finding a distinctive voice, crafting compelling content with stories, visual aids, technology, audience engagement, body language and gathering feedback to make you even better. It also trains you how to speak in different contexts - sales pitch, motivational speeches, eulogies, family gatherings. I wish I had had this by my side at the start of my career but will certainly be dipping into it from hereon in as the occasion arises. Highly recommend. Lyn Cobley, Australia
I've always enjoyed public speaking, so I wasn't looking for a book to help with my nerves. Instead, I wanted something that could help me step up my game, and this book totally nailed it. It's all about being yourself when you're up there, which I really appreciated. The author doesn't just give you strict rules to follow; it's more about finding your style and connecting with your audience in a real way. Karen Cordoba, USA
The author gives lots of tips and insights into the why's, how's, pitfalls, styles and techniques of public speaking. From contextualising and explaining the reasons for the fear and worry, to building confidence utilising the power of the mind and skilling you up toward gaining confidence in developing your own successful style. This gem of a book is a beneficial and an enjoyable read which will guide you toward success and confidence in public speaking; helping you relax into the process. Can't recommend this book enough. Lesley McCann, UK
As an experienced speaker, I was looking for insights to refine and elevate my presentations. Anne McKeown's Public Speaking: From Stage Fright to Spotlight delivers just that-no matter where you are in your public speaking journey, this book will take you to the next level.
Anne provides practical, actionable steps to improve both polish and professionalism in your delivery. But what truly stands out is her guidance on storytelling. She shows you how to weave stories that truly connect with your audience, making your message memorable and impactful. Her approach goes beyond the technical; Anne's wisdom as a Master Coach shines through in every chapter, guiding you to speak not just confidently but with true authenticity and empowerment.
If you're looking to command any room with presence and ease, this book has everything you need-from calming stage fright to capturing the audience's attention. Highly recommended for speakers of every level!
I like Anne McKeown's guidance on: how you find your own speaking voice; be authentic; identify your purpose and play to your strengths. As he says, it is much easier to embellish your strengths than work endlessly on your weaknesses. There is even a quiz to help you identify the type of speaker you are. Finally, if there is one thing I have learned in my 35 years of speaking and coaching presentation skills, is the power of authentic storytelling. Anne aptly sums this up when she says: "Humans have told stories since ancient times, finding a shared language transcending individual experiences and technical jargon." Craig Badens, Australia

With tips and suggestions on everything from conquering stage fright, to crafting memorable anecdotes, to incorporating technology and other tools to engage your audience, this book provides helpful strategies and insights into your personal style of speaking and how to best adapt that style. The book’s structure is also very user-friendly, with short quizzes, recaps and guides on how to put these skills into practice. Highly recommended for anyone looking to develop their confidence and performance as a speaker.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024Contrary to popular belief, there are better ways to be comfortable public speaking than picturing an audience unclothed. Anne McKeown details those better ways in her highly informative and engaging book, Public Speaking: From Stage Fright to Spotlight. One might expect her narrative to leap right into psychological issues based on anxiety and fear. In a way, it does.
• Remember that conquering fear is not a one-time event but a continuous practice. There will be moments of doubt and setbacks along the way, but these experiences are all part of the journey.
• Authenticity has become a rare and valuable commodity in a world saturated with information and competing voices.
• Your unique voice, perspective, and style become your competitive advantage, making you memorable and sought-after in your field.
However, this experienced speaker/presenter knows the first step in conquering one’s fears and anxiety is to be well-prepared. Thus, she spends a great deal of time in the beginning teaching how best to prepare a presentation. The information is invaluable and should be studied in detail before wondering what psychological tricks to play while facing an expectant audience.
Then, the author turns to relevant skills and their acquisition or development before implementation. Just know that these are not treated lightly or offhandedly. The information is detailed and deep, which is, again, highly beneficial to those who study it closely.
What about those psychological tips and tricks for dispelling anxious fear? Let Ms. McKeown deliver those precious gems. Considering its comprehensiveness, depth, and detail, this book should be the “go-to Bible” for all aspiring public speakers.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2024The book breaks down effective techniques for managing anxiety and provides actionable tips on how to captivate an audience. The step-by-step approach is particularly helpful for beginners who have little to no experience on stage, making the process feel manageable and less intimidating. However, while the content is strong, some sections could benefit from more real-world examples or case studies of people who have successfully applied these techniques. Adding more practical anecdotes would make the advice feel more relatable and actionable. Overall, it's a solid guide for anyone wanting to improve their public speaking skills and command a room with confidence.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2024This is a step-by-step guide where each chapter builds on the previous one, so the reader should read it chronologically. I found it an excellent resource to conquer the fear of public speaking and make anxiety a positive stress.
The author provides many relaxation techniques to reduce fear, such as breathing, vocal warm-ups, engagement techniques, etc. One of my takeaway techniques is the power of self-talk, which is how we can reshape our mindset and boost our confidence.
As the reader slowly builds on the foundation stage of conquering their fear, the author delves into other areas such as the content (core message, humor), body language (non-verbal cues), vocal techniques, audience engagement, etc.,
I appreciate the Q&A Confidence Assessment and the quiz included in the book. Super helpful.
My opinions are my own.

5 stelle meritate
