Very compelling. Totally relatable. Still going on! I could not put it down. I read it in two giant gulps over two days while recovering from the flu! This author has a clarity and sensitivity to the impacts of the ISMs that continue to plague our world today to the detriment of our institutions, communities, families and society. Ripley’s style of writing matches British 007 Bond-like intrigue with that slow historic conflict of the duty bound military’s archaic rules. These hot societal issues have, themselves, become weaponized world wide by politicians desperate to scapegoat different others to take the spotlight of investigation and prosecution off themselves. This historical novel only covers a short period ot time in 1984 and the lives of a few people, yet captures it all from the essence of true love to the irony of the use and abuse of power and does it in an experiential and vividly sensitive way. This author’s well researched work and skillful story telling is a 2024 gem. The young woman, Jo, and her stalwart Clark family with their simple values-driven way of standing up for each other with and to their fellow neighbors and friends and being willing to change with the times are iconic and alive in this reader’s heart, as I reverently put the book down and go to my computer to say. “BRAVO!” Please let us all know when the movie comes out! I want to see it! I highly recommend it.

I found that this book gave me insight into the personal and professional challenges and difficulties faced by those who are not yet accepted in their culture, but want to be true to who they are. This book has helped me to be more sensitive and aware of these issues.

This book opened my eyes to unbelievable prejudice in the British Army for women in the 80’s. America had Don’t ask, Don’t Tell but it seems like the UK reinstated the Spanish Inquisition. The story was entertaining with good character development. I found myself thinking of the story and the characters at odd hours of the day, they became so real to me. I was thoroughly enjoying reading about the struggles of Jo with her conscience and her duty. This was obviously close to the authors life even if the story was fictional. I look forward to reading more about Jo and Terry in the future.

This historical fiction novel kept me engaged from start to finish. The main character was investigating suspected lesbians in the English military. This was quite a challenging job, since she herself was a lesbian. The novel provided insight into what many women in the British Military endured. The book is written in the "Queen's English" which was absolutely perfect.

I became so engrossed with Ripley's book that I became cautious in public for awhile as though
I had absorbed the main character. I'm not gay, but it doesn't matter. As a woman I too have felt
defensive in some situations. Ripley writes so well
so that it's easy to identify with the main character's situation. The story was very real for me.

This book held my interest from start to finish. I got a true sense of how these women had to hide who they were from society. A real eye opener to how lesbian women were treated in the British Army. I look forward to more books by J M Ripley!

This book taught me many things about the British military through its engaging characters. Family dynamics and military base relationships made for a book I didn't want to put down.

Queen & Country is an excellent book. The writing is precise and beautiful and the. plot is fast moving, exciting and intense.

I felt connected to the major characters, Jo and Terry, and their struggles.

I didn't want to put the book to end because I wanted to see what happens after these events.

The title says it all these women gave service for Queen and Country and the powers that be turned on them in witch hunts. Certainly shocked me I had no knowledge. Great book, could not put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of tension and conflict
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2024
    I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
It was the first book I have read from the UK’s perspective of life in the military during the 80’s.
I felt annoyed of the archaic rules, protecting who knows what from whom, when it wasn’t even a crime. It made me angry, and a good storyteller makes you feel these emotions.
The characters were believable, and I was rooting for them throughout. There was plenty of tension, conflict and intrigue.
Thank you, J. M. Ripley for a wonderful story
