A highly informative and fascinating memoir of the DJ and music business. "Disc Jockeys, Preachers, and Elvis"-written in the first person-maps the life and career of Ron Brandon, as he bounces between radio stations from way back in the 1950s during the heyday of Rock and Roll.

Complete with plenty of memorabilia, Brandon's bucket list book will take you deep behind the scene in an absorbing journey through the years as he grapples with life on the edges of stardom, along with the rapid rise and fall of radio stations and his own popularity.

Hooking us right from the start with an anecdote featuring the King of Rock and Roll himself, Brandon's tongue-in-cheek humour and inventiveness make for an interesting tale, and even more so when a follow-up years later sees his precarious recording surface without permission. This mystery, along with that of the identity of the 'Mystery Kisser' provides a fascinating foray into the 'Elvis periphery', and an inside-out perspective of the star and his life.

Brandon's anecdotes, however, do not stop there, with fly-on-the-wall inside insights from the fifties, sixties, and seventies, complete with risque scantily clad girls and the hectic show and nightclub scene.

Executing a frank no holds barred delivery, paired with exceptional attention to detail and memory, "Disc Jockeys, Preachers, and Elvis", takes its reader on a hectic ride from technically challenging to bizarre, with a faint glimpse every now and again of the personality behind the larger than life DJ and presenter himself.

An easy read with plenty of name-dropping (well, why not if you can?}, Brandon offers us the flip side of the polished facade of show business that those on the outside never get a chance to see or experience.

A WORTHY UNDERTAKING, WRITTEN WITH INTEGRITY AND EXPERTISE.

Ron Brandon was the person who recorded Elvis' 1956 live performance in Tupelo and our Elvis legacy would be less rich had he not done so and then sent Elvis a personal copy! While all too many people think of the radio and television world as a place of glitter and excitement with Disc Jockeys leading the glamourous life of celebrities like Wolfman Jack or Casey Kasem, the reality is actually hard work with weekend and overnight shifts for too little pay and a hard-fought family life.

Ron Brandon's 55 years in the entertainment business is no doubt very similar to the thousands of people who have kept radio stations on air since before the creation of rock 'n' roll. Brandon describes his life from the early days of getting his ham radio license and his first job at Tupelo's WTUP radio station in 1956 through to 2010 and being the person who discovered Al Wertheimer's Elvis "Mystery Kisser" Barbara Gray. It is quite a journey, all that more tiring as he is forced from radio station to radio station searching for the perfect job.

I really enjoyed this self-published book about a hard-won and well-deserved life in the entertainment business. There are so many points where you know that you would have given up, but Ron Brandon keeps on going.

Overall I know that this book will really appeal to anybody who was ever involved in the US Radio industry between 1956 and 1990. Having said that, it is also a great story of personal endeavour that will appeal to anybody with an interest in the heyday of commercial radio, entertainment history, and of course Ron Brandon's Elvis connections.

Ron and I shared a WLEE Richmond microphone for several years. I always admired his tremendous on-air talent but until I read this book I was never aware of all the wonderful radio history he was involved in. Especially loved the segment about Fats Domino. All the elements for a great career documentary here Ron. Thanks for the memories. Randy Scott

I was never the successful DJ that Ron was. But his story captures the heart of the experience of the journeyman and women who lived the life. Sitting in the air chair, slip curing 45s, slamming carts into the machines and "walking up a record and hitting the post!"

If you worked in radio in the south, or maybe you are familiar with the stations Ron worked at, a book like this is rare. For me, the studio photos alone were worth it. Ron has an easygoing way of telling of his navigating radio in it's heyday. Ages ago when I was in radio, I simply knew his name from receiving RMR at the station.
Did not know he had worked at WAYS or WORD.
Book is certainly worth the money... don't forget to turn on the tower lights when you sign off the AM station.

I spent 45 years behind a microphone, living out a career in radio, "town to town, up and down the dial" ( as the WKRP in Cincinnati theme explains). I'm retired now, but I do miss the work. Nothing compares to a life on the air.
Ron Brandon wrote this as an autobiography, but it could easily have been the life story of anyone who careered in radio.
I did many of the same things: collected cash from hillbilly preachers on Sunday mornings; packed up all my belongings again and again to head for the next job; did an entire radio shift dressed up as a chicken from in front of the radio station. In other words, Ron's story was the story of all of us, and sadly, most of that world is now gone forever.
Kudos for penning such a tome, Mr. Brandon! Buddy Baron

It's a straightforward account of one man's life in radio in the USA, flitting from station to station, sometimes getting the good gigs, sometimes not. Ron (the author) has a friendly, engaging style and the book offers a genuine insight into the lives of my colleagues on the other side of the pond. There are many links to audio and video rcordings that help to enrich and validate the experience. If you're not in radio it's probably not for you, but if that's been your life I highly recommend it.
