An expanded version of this originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader.
    ---
“Sometimes the places where you are meant to be safe are the ones you should fear the most.”

The violence in this book centers on those places you're meant to be safe—home and family—and what happens when that safety is disrupted. The whodunit of the novel is the focus—but there's a lot said about the ripple effects of (many, but not all, of) the crimes talked about. How the repercussions of a moment of violence or other dangerous choices are long-lasting and alter the lives of those only indirectly affected by them. Crime Fiction in general is getting better at showing this, and few do it as well as Holten does.

Holten's signature style of terse chapters and paragraphs is well-evident here,* jumping from perspective to perspective to make sure the plot is always steadily advancing. This makes the pacing almost relentless and it's hard to put the book down, no matter what the reason for doing so may be. I'm not saying that I burned any meal or let a pot boil over while reading this, but I'd absolutely understand why someone would. Thankfully, the style also makes it incredibly easy to pick back up and get fully immersed in the story immediately. You could easily read 6 Ripley Avenue in one sitting without intending to.

    * Really, does she draft on cocktail napkins? What would happen if she invested in a couple of reams of 8.5 x 11/A4?

The only problem with the pace is that we don't get quite enough time to see enough of Helen and Sloane's friendship—it'd be easy to see their relationship as Sloane exploiting the lonely woman for ammunition and Helen as desperate for an emotional connection. That's what I saw it as initially. But as the novel progresses, we see actual affection between the two and it'd have been nice if circumstances had allowed us to see more of it. On the other hand, things do allow the reader to change their initial impression of Jeanette over the course of the novel (at least this one did).

This is one of those novels that is strengthened by the use of multiple POVs—the overlapping motives, agendas, and methods of the women looking into the crime and its repercussions, sometimes in alignment, sometimes at odds, but leading to getting at the truth was really well done. I'm not sure that, outside of the first bit of narrative from the Killer's point-of-view that having their perspective present is that helpful—but I'd say that about at least 98% of those that I've read, so take that comment with a boulder-sized grain of salt.

This standalone solidifies Holten as an auto-buy for me, it's a pleasant departure from Holten's series work, displaying her already visible strengths and giving her a chance to show new ones. 6 Ripley Avenue is a fast, compelling, read that will stay with you for a while—you can't ask for more than that.

Noelle Holten is a masterful author! 6 Ripley Avenue will take hold of you, and it won't let you go until you are gasping for air! It is a spectacular novel with a locked-door feel because a murder occurs in an approved premises for violent offenders. We get to live in the killer's head because of Holten's brilliant writing! Brace yourself for the ride because you won't want to get off - no matter how twisted it is!

6 Ripley Avenue is a new standalone thriller by Noelle Holten. If you’ve read any books from Holten’s DC Maggie Jamieson series, you already know she’s a polished writer with a knack for bringing very human characters to life on the page. What you might not know is that Holten worked as a probation officer for nearly 20 years. This makes the premise of 6 Ripley Avenue all the more intriguing, and brings an authenticity to our main character.

Jeanette Macey is a senior probation officer who oversees a hostel. The residents are violent risk offenders on probation. The hostel is in the midst of an ordinary neighborhood, and its presence has caused a lot of strife and tension amongst the neighbors living in such close proximity to the probationers. When one of the residents is murdered in the middle of the night, no one is particularly shocked. Danny Wells was a convicted murderer, and the neighbors certainly aren’t shedding any tears over his death. However, Jeanette has a job to do: she needs to find out what happened on her watch. Was it someone living in the house, a staff member, or perhaps a neighbor?

6 Ripley Street was fast paced and kept me turning the pages. The chapters give us the perspective of different characters, including one which is told from the viewpoint of the killer. Not all the characters are likable, but they are well written and have depth to them. Overall, I enjoyed this novel and would give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. I look forward to reading more by Noelle Holten.

    2.5 ⭐️

This book took me months to read. This idea for the book is good but I didn’t like the outcome.

It’s slow. I would start reading it and then just get bored. I would forget it existed in my kindle library and always find something for interesting to read.

I really didn’t care who the killer was by the end of the book and really didn’t know who the killer was when revealed.

This book grabbed me from the beginning and did not let go until the last sentence on the last page of the book. A murder has taken place in a home for probationers. I kept trying to guess who the killer was as there were so many characters to choose from. I loved the different points of view including the killer’s. Ms. Holten definitely has an excellent grasp of probation and law enforcement. You will definitely not be disappointed if you read this book.

I enjoyed this addition to the locked room mystery genre. I liked seeing the killer’s perspective and how we saw them gradually lose control of the situation as the story went on. I didn’t particularly like Helen or Sloane, but found that they moved the story along. We also don’t get to see much of the investigation - this story focuses on the reactions of Helen, Sloane & Jeanette so it is understandable to see their reactions to the investigation, but I felt that without seeing how the police investigation was going, the story lacked a little punch. I still enjoyed the story, but it did feel that it was missing something.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping locked-room mystery with bagass female characters!

Raced through this - a brilliant take on a procedural investigating a murder in a criminal probation house. Such a fantastic premise, since everyone is capable/a suspect. Characters are well-drawn and (crucially) I began to distrust a character I'd initially thought was watertight...leaving me spinning until the end. Recommend highly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!

Before I talk about my thoughts I need to express my absolute LOVE for this title and the cover! Both of these alone are a hook even before you read the blurb or the first page! Absolute LUSH!

The prologue is one of those killer hook prologues that I just love to read, written from the killer’s point of view it is really quite chilling and leaves the reader in no doubt that they are in for a deliciously dark read.

Noelle Holten has taken a break from her DC Maggie Jamieson series and in penning this psychological thriller featuring an approved hostel for some of the country’s most dangerous criminals, she really has shown the world just how dark her mind is!

Ripley House has attracted criticism and protests in the local community and when a murder takes place it seems as though those who were against the hostel opening in the first place were justified in their anger and their fear. Inside the hostel one resident has been murdered leaving everyone else under a cloud of suspicion and taking us on a very dark devious journey into the world of probation.

There is a very real sense of authenticity in the author’s writing and this comes from her extensive background in the probation service. She writes with the knowledge and understanding of just how stressful and demanding this role can be. The references to burnout, lack of resources and staff really did add to the reality of this book. I particularly loved Manager, Jeanette Macey’s character, she felt so real, the stress and strain she faced as a manager was portrayed brilliantly, I particularly loved the scenes where she lets rip! I was so cheering her on at these points!

Helen Burgess volunteers in Ripley House, which is a bit of a surprise as she was instrumental in protesting against the hostel opening, she also lives next door. She only helps out so that she can keep an eye on the goings on but she may end up becoming embroiled in something that she wishes she had never started. Helen teams up with her friend and investigative journalist, Sloane Armstrong who has been prolific in her condemnation of the hostel and its residents and slowly they begin to uncover a whole host of activities taking place under the eye of manager Jeanette Macey. Again another two well written characters who really got under my skin.

The story is told from the point of view of Jeanette, Helen, Sloane and the killer and it really allows the reader to get beneath the layers of discord and danger that inhabits the hostel. I especially enjoyed the killers POV, for me this is always a nice touch in a psych thriller as it really does place you in the heart of the story.

Helen Burgess was probably one of my favourite characters, she’s an older woman in her 60s and following the death of her husband she is clearly lonely and we really get to understand what lies behind her label of nosey neighbour; It was so easy to empathise with her and there were times my heart broke for her.

Perfectly paced 6 Ripley Ave keeps you turning those pages well after your bedtime, just one more chapter was my mantra all the way through. The tension keeps rising and the twists keep twisting, one minute I was confident I knew who the killer was only to have the rug pulled from under my feet the next. With a whole host of characters, many of whom were delightfully unlikeable (I do love an unlikeable character!) this one is a must for lovers of psych thrillers and that dark underbelly of criminal justice and behind the scenes of the system.

I'm a massive fan of the Maggie Jamieson series so I was really excited to finally get my hands on 6 Ripley Avenue. These characters are obviously unfamiliar, but they are very well developed. The chapters which alternate between viewpoints, including that of "The Killer" help us to get to know them and the motivation behind what they do.

Whilst I knew that probation houses existed, I had no idea how they operated or integrated into the local community. This setting is Noelle Holten's background so the procedure feels very authentic and it was easy to become involved in the story. There were a few acronyms or processes where I had to seek clarification, but overall these don't have a negative effect on the flow of the story.

Noelle Holten is a talented writer and she writes with a fast paced style that kept me hooked all the way through. She ends each chapter on a cliffhanger, which means you just have to keep reading! The novel is plotted really well and although there are a limited number of suspects, I had no idea who the killer was until the final pages!

There is definitely scope for Sloane to return in another book and I would absolutely love to read a sequel!

A fairly good easy read but there were a few too many holes in the story. I found myself constantly questioning why and wondering because the puzzle pieces didn't quite fit.
