Goodbye Old Paint (The Hat Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

Lizzie and the hat haven't been as careful as they think. When the FBI comes knocking, they know all about their nighttime pursuits.

Who even knew we had a Geospatial Intelligence Agency? This obscure part of the intelligence community has a problem that requires a special skillset. Lizzie and the hat are tasked with ridding the intelligence server farm of a gremlin infestation. They're ill prepared for this one, because .357 magnum revolvers are designed to deal with larger and hairier problems.

The Feds aren't giving Lizzie much chance to weasel out of the assignment, and they reluctantly accept the job. Lizzie faces some unique trials and has to make new friends to get through the assignment, and avoid a debilitating curse at the same time.

It's been a hard road for Lizzie during this series, and she's due for a couple of small upgrades. These are solo titles in a larger series, and you should be able to read any individual one without feeling lost. The series is dark humor at its base, but this one tends a little more toward the humor.

I was born in a town called Elko, Nevada. I like to tell everyone I was born in a small town in the 1940s. I'm not quite that old, but Elko has always been a little behind the times. This gives me a unique perspective of earlier times, and other ways of getting by. Some of this bleeds through into my fiction.

I moved to Idaho right after the turn of the century, and never looked back. My writing career was born here, with access to other writers and critique groups I jumped in with both feet.

I like to write about things that have something unusual. My works are in the realm of science fiction, paranormal, and fantasy. The goal is to entertain you for a few hours. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Goodbye Old Paint is another fabulous romp through the fantasy world of Lizzie and the Hat. Following a devastating flood that damaged many of the businesses in town, Lizzie is very hard up for money. There is just no work around. Lizzie has living expenses to pay and a student loan hanging in the background. The situation is quite desperate so when a couple of government agents appear, who know her recent history as a monster hunter and promise the forgiveness of her debt if she helps them, Lizzie has no option but to take the bait.

Enter the gremlins. I love gremlins. Somehow these horrid little creatures with their big teeth and ability to eat anything have always been my favourite fantasy creature so I was delighted to see them make an appearance. They didn't let me down, they were just as destructive and horrible as I remembered from the movie entitled Gremlins.

Several characters from the previous six books make an appearance in this one and I was delighted to see Dash and a few witches pop up in helpful rolls. Poor Lizzie, as always, must face some uncomfortable obstacles on her adventure, but she has great friends and the Hat by her side.

The Hat is a glorious feat of imagination and I love that it can transform into a 'fool's cap' and use the points to work a mobile phone. This always delights me.

A marvellous and fun fantasy adventure that will bring some brightness to your day.

Boyack’s latest outing of Lizzie and the Hat takes a different turn from the type of monster-hunting the two normally engage in. This time, the federal government employs the duo to eliminate an infestation of gremlins who’ve taken up residence in their server farm. These are nasty critters, gifted with both magic and staying power. It’s not an easy case, but the two get a hand from the witches’ community. If you’re a faithful follower of the series, some familiar faces pop up (Cyrus, Dash, and Destiny among others), but if you’re brand new to these clever and imaginative books—no worries. You’ll be gob smacked by the creativity Boyack paints his cast and surroundings with.

Two of my favorites get to make an appearance—Night Bump Radio, and Noodles, Cyrus’s erm… “pet.” I also enjoyed seeing some of the running gags (the Hat is still pushing for fog machines), and, as always, the humor, is snarky and sharp (such as the Hat calling the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency everything under the sun, but the actual name).

I also liked this little exchange, with Lizzie speaking first:

“I’ve been hanging around you too long. I sound like you, and you sound like me.”

    “That is kind of revolting.”

Speaking of Lizzie, she encounters a situation halfway through the story that is … highly unique, and played brilliantly for laughs, but not without sympathy tossed in. Apparently, there are more than a few downsides to monster hunting and Boyack made this one a gem. He clearly knows these characters well and flexes his writing muscles to make for an entertaining tale. There are also a few cartoon illustrations peppered throughout that add to the fun of the story. These stories just keep getting better an better! Break out the popcorn and enjoy!

When I read a Boyack book, I know I’m in for a whirlwind ride. Goodbye Old Paint is no exception. From the first page onwards, Lizzie and Hat take readers through various catastrophes and all forms of magic. The pace is fast, and if you’re like me, you’ll pause to take a breath.

I highly recommend the Hat series, and especially this latest addition. The unexpected becomes the norm through Boyack’s wild imagination, and I am in awe of his creative talent. Bravo!

Lizzie and the Hat are back and trying to recover after disastrous flooding. Her car is barely functional, and funds are very limited as she waits for her disaster aid to come. It’s even been hard to book the band to play out. That’s when a government agency shows up needing her unusual skills to help with a gremlin infestation. They make an offer to excuse student loans. This takes Lizzie down a fun path that brings back some familiar characters from past books. I am a fan of The Hat Series and love Mr. Boyack’s humor. This book took that humor up a notch. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments, but I won’t go into detail and spoil them. I enjoyed an upgrade Lizzie received and I always appreciate the Hat’s snarky comments and how he helps. Another great Hat Book I can easily recommend.

Lizzie and the hat always embark on some kind of insane adventure, and this book #7 in the series is no exception. With a large dash of humor and a mission to protect our national security, she and the hat set out to eliminate the threat.
This book had more than a few surprises. The entire area is still recovering from the devastating flood in the previous book and everyone is struggling while waiting for FEMA assistance to come through. So when Lizzie is offered the job, she takes it. As she and the hat work together to destroy the gremlins who have invaded the computer banks, there are moments of hilarity. She even gets bit. But the worst is the curse. No, I won't tell you what it is because that would be a big spoiler, but it also brought more than one chuckle as the hat seeks help for a cure. I love seeing previous characters pop up in this story. Joyeux, Mad, and Dash are a part of the witch coven and Lizzie needs their help, along with Noodles, the creature we met in a previous book.
This is a fun read and I rejoiced when Lizzie managed to get an upgrade to her Mini Cooper when it finally gave up and died. Yes, her new ride is on the book cover. Quite an improvement. But it was the irony of the ending that left me in stitches. It seems Lizzie can never catch a break. If you love fantasy with big humor, this book is for you. It's a quick read and highly entertaining!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 17, 2023
Though I haven't read all the books of this series, and often the one's I have read aren't in order, I enjoy each and every one. While this is book 7 of The Hat series, it works well as a stand alone novel. I'm sure I would have had much fun with revisiting old characters and other shenanigans had I read all of them, but still this book stands out on its own.

I love the story premise of a Government Agency having a problem with Gremlins. I'll say no more on that to avoid spoilers.

    Here are some lines/paragraphs I loved ...

'“Our weapons are unsuited to this job, but we have to do it anyway. It’s like cleaning your bathroom with a fork. Good for what it’s intended for, but not much else.”'

    And ...

'The glop slowly reversed course, like a slug making an about-face. “What the hell is that?” the hat asked. “My sourdough starter. I just fed him, so he’s feeling frisky.”' I found this so hilarious and freaking inventive!

    And ...

'"I’m nice, see. I’m practically smiling." He curled his brim upward.

For pure entertainment value and lots of laughs and imaginative quirks, Goodbye Old Paint gets 5 stars from me. If you love a quick, fun read, then this book is for you!
