Veil of Synnor Kindle Edition
The Elemental Titans watch over Synnor, the only haven from the surrounding wasteland. In return for their protection, citizens are selected to compete for their lives with bows and arrows.
Acalan and Iverissa are happy until the Titans demand that they compete against one another, where only one can survive. Evading their selection means fleeing the city that they once called their sanctuary.
As they traverse foreign lands and meet unexpected allies, all that matters is staying together.
With each step beyond the boundaries of Synnor, they inch closer to uncovering the harrowing truth that lay hidden beneath the city's deceptive charm.
Deeply mysterious and thought-provoking, “Veil of Synnor” asks its reader a simple question that will stick with them long after reading:
Would you be brave enough to ask what is on the other side?

About the author

When Scott Thompson is not working as an IT Professional, he is most likely running, cycling, bouldering or inflicting some other form of exercise upon his body. Failing that, you will find him playing Dungeons and Dragons or writing a story.
This project was undertaken by Scott in late 2019, shortly after graduating from university and before finding full-time employment in his field. A big part of his motivation for this project was the idea that this might be the remarkable thing he was supposed to do in his life. Over the years of this project, he found himself stuck in a loop of existentialism on several occasions. He struggled to scratch that itch for a while.
Eventually Veil of Synnor, among other things, broke him out of this loop.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2023Format: KindleI picked this up because of the cover and the blurb. I was in the mood for some dystopian and in that regard the book did not disappoint. The world building was rich, but I did feel like there could have been more expansion on it. The characters were relatable and pulled you in, but there were times when I felt like they were a little stiff. The story was well-written but it lacked some of the depth I would have hoped for. Overall it was a good read, and the story came to a satisfying ending, but did feel like the story as a whole could’ve been longer and more engaging that way.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2023Format: KindleThis YA dystopian novel had me on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happened to our two characters, Acalan and Iverissa! In the beginning, we learn that Acalan is an archer in trials that determine who will be sacrificed to the Titans. The sacrifice is for the good of the people, so he always completed the trials without question. Just like the queen expects from her subjects. That is, until one day Acalan sees a name he never expected as his next contender. Someone who has been asking a lot of questions about what is really going on in Synnor: his childhood best friend Iverissa. Together, they have to find a way to survive, which means finding out what truly lies beyond the waters separating Synnor from the rest of the world.
This book reminded me of several dystopian novels I read and loved as a teenager. I appreciate how the author has created a flawed main character who needs help from his friends and who doesn't always make the best choices. While the stakes were high for the characters at times, there were also some funny and cute moments thoughout the book.
I felt like the book could have gone more in depth in describing life on Synnor, including what it looked like, and in showing the friendship between Acalan and Iverissa before the trials. In the middle of the book, I felt like I finally had a better grasp on what Synnor was like. In addition, I would have enjoyed more flashbacks focused on the characters' friendship so that their relationship was built up before they decided to risk everything for each other.
Overall, I thought this was a great debut novel, and I had a lot of fun reading it!
