Cops & Robbers: A Parker City Mystery Kindle Edition
Just north of Parker City in the small town of Wakeville, a string of robberies have the residents of the quiet community on edge. Then, when two homes in one of Parker City’s wealthiest neighborhoods are broken into on the same night, PCPD Detectives Ben Winters and Tommy Mason wonder if the crime wave has spilled into their jurisdiction. There’s one chilling difference, though. This time, the intruders left a dead body behind in their wake.
As Ben and Tommy delve into the investigation, what initially appears to be a robbery gone wrong soon unravels into something far more sinister. Their pursuit of the truth leads them down a path, uncovering ties to a crime spree that shook Baltimore fifty years earlier. As past and present collide, the young detectives must race to find a killer driven by a motive buried deep in the past.

About the author

Justin is a theatre producer, mystery writer, and director.
When not sitting in his library devising new and clever ways to kill people (for his mysteries), Justin can usually be found at The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, where he is one of the owners and Managing Director. Since his family purchased the theatre in 2002, he has produced over one hundred productions, working behind the scenes to make the theatre magic happen. In addition to producing, over the years, his directing credits have grown to include everything from stagings of classic mysteries and thrillers like Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, Wait Until Dark, and Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery to regional premieres of modern day musicals including Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Dolly Parton's 9 to 5: The Musical, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
For the 2005 theatre season, Justin wrote his very first interactive murder mystery, A Rock-n-Roll Golden Oldies Mystery, followed by The Case of the Oldest Living Showgirl two years later. These interactive mysteries were so popular that Justin began producing them for events outside of the theatre, creating the Marquee Mysteries Series which now presents interactive murder mystery events at Way Off Broadway, Nora Roberts's Inn Boonsboro, and other venues around Mid-Maryland.
After writing nearly fifty of these interactive mysteries, Justin began work on his first full-length "case" . . . a novel. That novel, Now & Then, is the first book in the new Parker City Mysteries Series from Level Best Books.

The Parker City Mystery series is set in a medium size Maryland town in the 1980s. Each book seems to have a dual timeline, alternating between the current date and the past. The chapters are clearly labeled as to which period they are. A key aspect of Parker City is the rich history and that is shown to us in these mysteries. I am enjoying the historical aspects. They show the development of the town, the class structures and the prominent families.
The main characters are the detectives, Ben and Tommy. There have been a string of robberies in homes of wealthy residents. Now, a woman philanthropist has been murdered in her home. Ben was just at an event the night before celebrating the renovation of a historic theater, and met the woman, Clara.
Ben and Tommy are capable investigators. Without the forensics and other technology, they still manage with fingerprints and other evidence, as well as interviews and facts in historical records and newspapers. Cops & Robbers seemed a bit slow paced to start in the investigation. However, it was clear to me that Clara's history in the 1920s led to her murder. I was able to guess what happened well before it was revealed which is unusual for me.
I liked reading about the way things worked in the 1920s and also the 1980s. Neither is our current time period, so some technology and scientific methods were limited. A fax machine was a brand new tool!
With the time periods jumping back and forth in each book, the present doesn't feel as fixed. So I believe one could enjoy these as standalones or in any order. Although, I would read the first book to start as it lays the character foundations.
