Heart of Flame: The Fires of Aileryan Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 93 ratings

Fires that curse, fires that heal,
And all the while, so turns the wheel...

With the Queen of Merawuld confined to her bed and the city of Tyllcarric in the iron grasp of the High Mage, war is closing in on all horizons for Ash and Senan. Hellbent on eliminating any threats to the fae throne, Kiarda of Veshlir has raised an army to claim her prize — and she will not be stopped.

Meanwhile, across the border, change is afoot in Estilleon.

Thalion’s men are ready for rebellion, but when the first rush of power ends, he finds himself forced to toe the line between strength and brutality. By his side, Laeli is a stranger in the human world — caught between love and loyalty in a land that stifles her voice.

As conflict escalates across the land of Aileryan, those with power clash amidst a sea of ideals, dreams and greed, forcing the most battle-scarred to overcome their demons and prove they are a force to be reckoned with.

For that which has been dormant for so long is about to burst forth, and when the winter solstice arrives, all will be at the mercy of the Gods...

When Kate isn’t writing, she is reading her way through an ever-growing TBR pile. Kate has wanted to be an author since she was a child, when she used to write stories about her friends and ‘publish’ them with the help of a stapler.

Kate has too many university degrees. She started a Law degree, then changed her mind and ended up completing a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and Journalism, and an Honours degree in Screenwriting. Realising she couldn't live on two-minute noodles forever, she went back to uni and got a job.

Kate's writing is influenced by history, sociology, philosophy and mythology, and by politics. Even though she never intends it to happen, her books end up being very political and complex, which people either love or hate. She writes multiple point of view stories with individual plot lines that interweave at different points throughout the narrative. Kate never intends this either - her characters are just bossy and rude and all have things to say. She always throws a healthy dose of romance into the mix to keep these people happy.

Kate also writes under the penname KM Schumacher.

It's sheer perfection and probably my all time favorite book of the year. I thought time would help me distance myself from my crazed love of this book to leave a more level-headed review, but it hasn't. I can feel myself slipping into fangirl headspace, so I might as well lean into it. I'm obsessed with Schumacher's characters, her world, her prose, and her unflinching examination of power, love, humanity, and sacrifice. Heart of Flame is the second book in the Fires of Aileryan duology, and perfect for fans of epic high fantasy, rich world building and complex magic systems, political intrigue, large casts of flawed and multidimensional characters, romance, revenge, forgiveness, and exploring the very question of how to live vs survive in a harsh world.

So, I did not think this was duology. I just plain forgot. But this book was a great conclusion! Everyone’s stories was wrapped up so nicely and I love when that happens. I was left satisfied!

Kate does NOT disappointed with this action packed conclusion to her debut duology. If she had given us political intrigue and mystical mythology before, she delivers a double dose. I don’t like giving away plot in reviews, but suffice to say, she took everything that was good about the first book and made it better in this one.

There’s something so real about her characters that by the end I felt like I actually knew them. Their pain was my pain! Their victories were my victories. I learned through Kate’s world that sometimes a bad guy can be terrible in every way, and still, somehow your favorite character. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted the baddies to get what they deserve, but I enjoyed every moment with them.

If you are on the fence about reading an epic fantasy romance, this is a good start. I’m not a huge romance reader, but this…this is just pure high fantasy gold, with everything good about a love story, framed by devious plotters and bloody battles.

Heart of Flame is the perfect ending to this exciting series. From the intensity to the drama, Kate has crafted a fantastic story that is both thrilling and impressive. I loved the characters and their storylines, this is truly a well done fantasy read. I can highly recommend this series as well as Kate’s other works.

The second and final book to The Fires of Aileryan was fantastic! I enjoyed every chapter from start to end! The beginning pulled you into a world of chaos and uncertainty, leaving a trail of nervous page-turning as the protagonists finally come face-to-face with their fears and enemies. The multiple POVs were engaging to read. Everyone had their own ambitions and distinct voice, so it was never dull. The fiery finale was exactly what I was hoping for, although I should forewarn others with a weak stomach, there will be many brutal scenes. Overall, a very splendid read! I am sad I can no longer traverse the world of Aileryan now that Ash and Laeli's story has come to a close. Despite that, Schumacher is a grand storyteller and I cannot wait to see what other great stories she will share with the world!

Here we meet the characters again as they close a monumental chapter in their lives. The series was wrapped up in a way that you aren't left in the lurch wondering what happened to the people you've come to know.

My review of the series : Very worth reading. These books offer the reader a full immersion into the lives of multiple interconnected characters. You get thrown into a world in the middle of big changes in both the human and fae territories. Where you follow the characters through self realization, love, courage, and sense of duty.

The author manages to write a storyline that is not simple and predictable with thick plot lines and enough information to keep you from getting lost.

🔥Kate Schumacher's world in this duology was breathtakingly well laid out for readers. With multiple POVs, I got to see every beautiful and deprave thing that went on. Ash, Jarlah & Fox and Thalion & Laeli are characters you won't soon forget about!

🔥I felt like I was reading Game Of Thrones level fantasy but with a female authors air about it!

🔥The characters all developed so well over the duology and each storyline was interesting enough that I didn't want to put the books down. These are definitely fantasy books that you have to be ready for! It takes a bit to get into the world with full understanding of places and characters, but once you get your head around that, it's an amazing ride!

🔥 Forbidden fire magic that comes out at the worst time
    🔥Rescue missions
    🔥Friends to lovers
    🔥Epic love story (book two)

I have spent the last four the world of Aileryan, and more specifically in the world of Kate Schumacher. I was fortunate enough to happen across her post about these books and I will be forever grateful.
Fantasy novels are one of my favourite genres to read, the worlds are richer that stakes higher and there is just some kind of special spark they all contain.
Of course there are good and bad, the literary landscape is rife with options, how ever can you decide? I can see why people would be drawn to established authors, names they are familiar with, but notoriety doesn’t always mean a compelling story.
This series is something new and different, yes themes are familiar, how can they not be but the way Schumacher deftly moves between characters and locations and yet keeps them all fully within the story, no one seems superfluous and the plot flows quickly and before you know it you’re at the end and wishing you could go back.
Politics, wars, love, loss magic and lore and everything in between. Pick these up, you will not be sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good conclusion to an epic fantasy duology

I'd honestly all but forgotten about this series but a book sale offer on Kindle by the author gave me the impetus to read the second half of this duology...

A thoroughly enjoyable conclusion to the series, as the disparate gathering of heroes battle to save their world from the grasp of corrupt, power hungry tyrants... Glad to see Ash and Jarlath finally get together, and the relationship between Thalion and Laeli is one of the better human/elf pairings I've encountered since the writing of Tolkien (enough to overcome my usual aversion to such things). The death scenes of the villains were so deliciously satisfying (not enjoyed reading about people dying helplessly at a feast since the Red Wedding)... Another gripping indie fantasy read from Kate Schumacher...

This is an amazing fantasy series! The world building is top notch, the characters and side characters are so well written! The multiple points of view and the inner struggles of the characters add so much depth to the story. The chemistry between Thailon & Laeli is 🤌 chefs kiss perfect! I absolutely loved how the Gods & Goddesses and the Wheel of the Year were woven throughout the story. The battle scenes were epic and the ending was beautiful. I couldn’t put this book down and I didn’t want it end! Loved it!

What I loved about this book was how we spent a good deal of time with the MCs, getting to know them and their motivations on a deeper level. This was something I felt "Shadow of Fire" missed out on a bit, but it was certainly made up for here!

Thalion and Laeli took centre stage in book 2, and I am NOT complaining. They both had amazing arcs, individually and together, and we could see so clearly how they influenced the characters around them.

With magic and meddling gods, battles and political scheming, there's something here for everyone. I recommend you give this duology a shot!!
