A Christmas Rescue Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

A romantic comedy about discovering the magic of Christmas from best-selling authors Kirsty McManus and Diane Michaels

Self-proclaimed Christmas superfan Hannah Walker loves her Michigan hometown, a year-round shrine to the holiday. And this year looks to be extra special since Brett, her long-distance boyfriend, is permanently back in town.

A proposal would make the season even brighter, but with Brett clinging to his bachelor lifestyle, Hannah heads to Australia to care for—and spy on—an injured grandmother she hardly knows.

The frail relative she expects turns out to be a free spirit with an active social life and little desire for anyone’s help. Now Hannah is stuck on the opposite side of the world, spending the holidays where it never snows. With her relationship in free fall and a deadline looming at an increasingly suffocating job, it looks like Christmas might be completely ruined.

Until she meets Xavier, the bronzed surfer god who runs the animal rescue shelter next door. Could helping him and connecting with her grandmother and new friends lead Hannah to realize the perfectly planned life she thought she wanted might not be the one she needs?

What a way to kick off the Christmas season here in October of 2020. ;)

    (Contains spoilers)

Though the book is set in modern day, it is set pre-Covid. And what a wonderful escape from our 2020 world this story provided.
Hannah reluctantly heads from Michigan to Australia to care for her injured grandmother. Hannah is in love with her Christmassy hometown, and is none too pleased to have been tapped for nurse (and spy) duty for a grandmother she hardly knows. To top it off, it’s December, and Hannah loves the thought of Christmas with her family, best friend, and her boyfriend who has recently moved back to town. With apartment hunting and maybe an engagement ring in her future, Hannah has a lot of ties to bind her to the US.
But duty calls, and authors Diane Michaels and Kirsty McManus bring us along for what feels like an immersive vacation in Noosa, Australia. But while we get to kick back and enjoy the lush, tropical surroundings, and the colorful animals and people, Hannah has a bit of a harder time.
I VERY MUCH appreciate that the story of our girl-meets-boy, while awkward, does not contain the awful trope of girl and boy instantly hating each other, and then working through that hate while harboring secret crushes on each other.
I like the way most of the characters treated each other with respect and kindness, even when their viewpoints or philosophies or goals were at odds.
This story was a fun, soothing balm for those of us in need. Whether you love snowy climes, or warm breezes, “A Christmas Rescue” might be just what you need, this holiday season, or any season.

    Spoilers -
Hannah is sent from Michigan to Australia, to spend some time with her grandmother who is going through rehab for her arm surgery. The next door neighbor has an animal rescue and he is so fine in a lot of ways. Hannah is swamped with translating a manual, setting up a donations party, helping feed the rescue animals, and helping grandma. The characters are fun with banter and sass, along with strength and determination to succeed in their goals. The twists and surprises throughout the story cause many stops and restarts to all of the relationships. Friends and family sure do rule on Christmas.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

First off let me say what a joy it was to read Christmas anytime and to escape right now into a book too. And what a fun escape this was too. From the snowy USA all the way to the hot sunny beaches of Noosa, Australia. Hannah leaves her home in Michigan and a boyfriend who just happens to arrive back there from being gone for years (yes seems they are long-distance dating) and she gets sent to take care of her grandma Shelia in Australia who has gotten hurt. Now granny Shelia is not just any ole grandma as we come to find out either but she is so much fun and is spry as most of the young folks too. Once across the ocean, things change, and might I say Hannah changes herself when she starts meeting people and working as a volunteer at the animal center next door with Xavier. Fate always seems to know when she needs to step in and lend a hand, move a mountain or maybe just push a little lady around so her granddaughter will come to visit a spell. This book is one of those books that we need right now in these times. Grab a copy... you will be so happy you did.

There are a lot of sexual innuendos in this books especially from Hannah's spunky grandmother with her fertility dolls and necklaces. Hannah had her life planned out with her on again off again boyfriend Brett, but distance away from him in Michigan and hearing about him with another woman makes her question her life choices. I don't know why she would want a job translating boring manuals into German. Although there were some funny descriptions, it sounds like a slog. Hannah finds joy in working with the baby animals at her grandmother's sexy neighbor Xave's shelter and helping him raise money. I would love to be able to work all day with dogs, cats, and wildlife rescues. Like Hannah I can't picture Christmas without snow, but I could get used all the things to see in Australia and the laid back attitude of her grandmother and Xave. He's a little to laid back at times to where he's running around at the last minute to complete important tasks. There were a lot of funny, some of them over the top moments in this sexy Aussie holiday romance.

“People always tell you that you should find what makes you happy and pursue that dream. But what happens if that dream no longer makes you happy and something completely different and unexpected comes along.”
I was so excited to read this one. Hannah has a structured life and has moved back home but anticipates getting engaged soon and starting the life she has always pictured with her long term boyfriend.
As we all know, plans change! Hannah goes to Australia to help her grandmother, Sheila, as she rehabs from surgery. Sheila is a fun one and Hannah becomes part of her grandmother’s world by helping the very handsome and caring next door neighbor care for animals at his animal shelter.
I loved this story! It starts on Thanksgiving and goes through Christmas so you get a true holiday vibe. Australia has always been on my bucket list to visit so the setting and the people in the story are just wonderful! This is a quick read and an uplifting read so add this one to your holiday list!!
