Review
"A Cottage in Plotlands by Dawn Knox is a sweet, historical romance that will appeal to lovers of happy endings. Joanna Marshall is just eighteen years old and very much an innocent. When her father died, leaving her and her mother in a tough financial position, the pair had no choice but to seek help from her Uncle John, her mother's brother, and his acerbic wife, Ivy. With Uncle John so often away for work, the pair mainly shared the house with the irascible Ivy. Desperate to save enough money to move into their own house, Joanna's mum worked at the local laundry and Joanna worked for a law firm as a shorthand typist. When her mum informed Joanna they almost had enough money for their own house, she was ecstatic; finally, they could get away from the ever-critical and constantly harping Ivy. Her joy quickly turns to horror when tragedy strikes and Joanna suddenly finds herself all alone in the world. Does she stay with her aunt or does she try to find the country cottage her mom has left her? Her journey to The Plotlands will be laced with new challenges, new friends, and a possible life-changing romance.
A Cottage in Plotlands is a gentle examination of the class system in England which, after WWI, was coming under greater pressure. Author Dawn Knox does a wonderful job of showing the juxtaposition between the "haves" and the "have nots", the elites and the working class. In a society that was slowly emerging from the strict rules that these two classes could not possibly mix, the love that grows between Joanna and her employer, the young lawyer Ben, is at the core of this novel. I loved how many of the characters in this story, such as Aunt Ivy, Mrs. Pike, and Ben's mother were overdrawn to give added impetus to their classist attitudes. I appreciated the almost frontier-like attitude of the residents of The Plotlands. They may not have emigrated overseas but their camaraderie and their shared experience in a new concept of suburban living, away from the dirt and grime of London, was certainly something unique for working-class folk. The idea that the common working man was entitled to some degree of natural surroundings, healthy environment, and minor luxury was a new concept and one the residents adopted with gusto. The willingness of strangers to help a struggling young woman on her own was a testament to this frontier spirit and flew in the face of typical English reserve. The solution to the romantic dilemma was perfect for the situation and I applaud the author for this. This story warms the heart and reminds us all that we are essentially the same. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it." - Grant Leishman for Readers' Favorite

About the author

Dawn spent much of her childhood making up stories filled with romance, drama and excitement. She loved fairy tales, although if she cast herself as a character, she’d more likely have played the part of the Court Jester than the Princess. She didn’t recognise it at the time, but she was searching for the emotional depth in the stories she read. It wasn’t enough to be told the Prince loved the Princess, she wanted to know how he felt and to see him declare his love. She wanted to see the wedding. And so, she’d furnish her stories with those details.
Nowadays, she hopes to write books that will engage readers’ passions. From poignant stories set during the First World War, to the zany antics of the inhabitants of the fictitious town of Basilwade; and from historical romances, to the fantasy adventures of a group of anthropomorphic animals led by a chicken with delusions of grandeur, she explores the richness and depth of human emotion.
A book by Dawn will offer laughter or tears – or anything in between, but if she touches your soul, she’ll consider her job well done.
She has been a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards for 2017 and 2020, Readers' Favorite Book Awards 2018 and Independent Author Network Book of the Year Award 2018.
Dawn has also written two plays about the First World War, which have been performed in England, Germany and France.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved this book
I read this in two days. Such a different kind of story I know where the Dunton plotlands were and had them in mind whilst reading this. It’s a love story as well as being a look back at the social history of how laindon was when Londoners were looking for peace and quiet and a place of their own in the Essex countryside

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet historical romance
This is a gentle read with some exciting moments and a satisfying ending. I loved reading about Plotlands, an area I'd never heard of. I think that's what made it so interesting and I loved the fact that this was a place where everyone was welcome no matter their background. Such a great community spirit that warmed my heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Convincig characters
I really enjoyed meeting all of the characters in this book. It is set in an era in which I’m interested in any case. It was fascinating too to read about the Plotlands community and how people built their own homes on land they were able to buy. And we have a feel-good romance woven into it as well. Highly recommended.
