Dive into A Deep Thing
A gripping and twisty beach read filled with secrets, lies, love, & adventure.
A young widow must question everything she thinks she knows.
What was her husband hiding in the jungles of Mexico?
A Deep Thing by A.K. Smith is a high concept thriller--think The Da Vinci Code of the deep--that grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go. A roller coaster ride of romance, suspense, mystery and intrigue, this page-turner surprises at every turn and offers a stunning ending you'll never suspect. M. Baron- Author of Stumble Stones: A novel
Rocked by her husband's tragic death, Kendall Jackson strives to put her life back together. But Ryder, her nineteen-year-old stepson, is bitter and wants nothing to do with her. A call from a cave diver in Mexico gives her hope of mending the relationship with her stepson. Before his death, her husband arranged a diving expedition as a birthday gift for his son. Kendall persuades Ryder to honor his father's last wish.
From the campus of Western Maryland College to the woods of Camp David and the caves of the Yucatán, Kendall and Ryder take a journey to discover what her husband worked so hard to hide, and to protect his treasured secrets from falling into the wrong hands. The choices they make will decide their fate and the future of others. Will they risk everything for the truth?
★★★★★With its suspensful pacing, twisty plot and conspiracy theories, A Deep Thing is a surprising mystery, certain to shock you with its final turn.
Think an Indiana Jones-type thriller with the nonstop staccato beat of jungles, dangerous dives, and a treasure hunt like no other. Think of a series of surprises set in the Yucatan jungle that continually test the characters and surprise the reader. Then wrap this adventure in the cloak of a mother's struggles with grief and a conspiracy that reaches out to replace her husband's memory with something beyond anything she's ever known. D. - Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2017I found this book a wonderful surprise. The story was quite simple. A widow discovers her husband was not all what he appeared when she is contacted with a strange request. A truculent step-son, and a need for answers that incorporates the beauty of Mexico, and a possible romance makes good reading and then just as we accept this as the plot we are lead into the unexpected. The little twist at the end is an added bonus that leaves you wondering long after you finish reading if more is to come. It is not a cliff hanger. It is a very clever piece of writing..
I thoroughly enjoyed the pace, the unusual setting, the very interesting characters, many of which are peripheral and yet still manage to lend a reality to the action, and I loved the way suspense was maintained all the way through in a very subtle but so effective way.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2016It’s always fun to read stories based on things that you’ve experienced in real life.
As a 1968 graduate of Western Maryland College, I found A.K. Smith’s depiction of both the campus and flavor of the college to be fun and accurate, and it brought back great memories.
During the 1970’s, which was very early in the history of cave diving, I dove a lot of the Central Florida springs and caves… and “A Deep Thing” was excellent at evoking those experiences too.
So… I feel like I got a twofer.. great story that brought back fine memories.
I tried to post this earlier, and seem to have failed, so if it turns up twice… my bad.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2017This book took a considerable amount of research. It was so well done that it's hard to believe this is the author's first book. A great read for anyone who enjoys a story full of conspiracy theories, with love and adventure thrown in. The author weaves a beautiful tapestry that induces imagination, curiosity and excitement while leaving one to ponder; what if? Could this be true? Fact or fiction hmm...
Loved the ending even though I was sad this story came to an end.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2017This book kept my interest as I learned about diving and enjoyed the descriptions of the water and jungle. The story is an adventure with several fun and sometimes a little scary twists and turns. The main character seemed real with possibly a bit too many positive coincidences. The story was captivating.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2018I'm so happy that I discovered this gem of a book! The premise was so intriguing and it truly followed through to deliver what it promised: adventure, mystery, thrills, and coping with complex emotions of love and loss. It was very easy to dive right in and not come up for air (yes, that is a scuba pun!) I learned about the exciting world of scuba, cave diving, cenotes, the jungles of Mexico and ancient mysteries of the past. The author is clearly an expert and wrote an believable and intriguing plot that involves all of the above, as well as secret government agencies and top secret research. I felt part of this world that Smith created so flawlessly. The characters were complex, human and I found myself relating to Kendall on many levels. A strong protagonist who overcomes so much and must figure out who she can trust kept me flipping pages, wanting answers and cheering for her. The bonds of family and friends are tested, with many emotional layers that make the reader truly care about these characters. I highly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017I was really looking forward to reading this book because the plot seemed so unique and exotic. Well, it turned out cheesy and were full of characters I could not identify with or care about. Tim and Kendal’s marriage—it didn’t seem realistic on many levels. But I was so insulted by the author’s writing. The grammar and writing style at the beginning were only so-so and only became progressively worse as the story unfolded. Here is an example: “Roberto knew the sea backwards”. The words “and forwards” were needed or is the author trying to tell us that his idea of navigation is to plow through the sea in a backwards manner? The author needs to read through her written work and hire a better editor—pronto!!

I could not put this book down. Although it was largely predictable, I couldn't help myself trying to get to the end to see if I was right. Lovely characters. I found the book highly entertaining!

‘A Deep Thing’ draws you in with a kaleidoscope of description, then captures your attention at the end of the first chapter with a massive hook. From there you follow the journey of the main character Kendall, as the life she thought she knew starts to fall apart around her and secrets about her deceased husband start to surface. These new found secrets take Kendall on a journey through the beautiful tropical forests of Mexico and the intriguing world of cave diving.
While Kendall is searching for answers, the mystery of her husband’s secret life subtly plays out throughout the book and has you guessing until the very end. This is a well-paced suspense novel which has been brilliantly written and will have you captivated from start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Weak ending
I was disappointed with the way it ended. It felt like a betrayal. The story dragged a little in places.
