4.1 out of 5 stars 1,357 ratings

Discover the gorgeous and spicy new regency romance that is perfect for fans of Bridgerton, Lisa Kleypass and Eloisa James.

Summer, 1816. A notorious rebel is about to meet her match...

Lady Georgiana Pendlebury is no stranger to breaking the rules of polite society. But when a so-called ‘friend’ invites her to a clandestine party, Georgiana is shocked to discover the event is more scandalous than even she could have imagined. So when a mysterious stranger offers help, she accepts, not realising their encounter will turn her life upside down.

Later that summer, Georgiana is invited to attend a house party at an infamous castle in Yorkshire. The gathering is a loosely veiled effort to arrange a marriage for the Duke of Northriding, who desperately needs an heir. Duke Gabriel Mauleverer has a terrible reputation as a rake, and Georgiana is happy to be a guest purely for the entertainment, but upon arrival, she is shocked to discover that the Duke is none other than the stranger who rescued her weeks earlier.

As the other ladies vie for the Duke’s attention, Georgiana is desperate to avoid their shocking secret getting out. But she finds herself caught, unable to avoid Gabriel’s gaze. Are they a threat to each other? Or could they be the answer to each other’s greatest desires?

Emma Orchard grew up in Salford and was given tickets to the grown-up library at the age of 11 because she’d read all the children’s books and the librarians were sick of the sight of her. She became obsessed with Georgette Heyer and hasn’t stopped reading her novels since. She studied English Literature at university and went on to work at Mills & Boon and behind the scenes in television and in publishing.

Emma’s first two Regency romances - The Second Lady Silverwood and The Runaway Heiress - were published in 2023. A Duke of One’s Own, What the Lady Want and The Viscount and the Thief were published by Boldwood in 2024, to be followed by A Gentleman’s Offer in March 2025. Emma has several more novels that she’s excited to share with you over the rest of the year - please do follow her for details.

This is a well written book and a funny romance. The main characters are well developed. Georgie and Gabriel are delightful! I want to hear more of their wonderful love story! The 2 gay couples are discussed within the family in very loving ways. This was a nice touch. It's nice to read a book on Kindle Unlimited that has been properly edited.

This is the second book I've read by Emma Orchard. The previous one had much more humor and less sex. I preferred that one.

Just okay for me. I started skimming more and more. Idk. There was just something about the writing that didn’t work for me. I think the story had a good premise and good bones, but the execution didn’t work for me.

I liked it enough to finish. And there were plenty parts I enjoyed very much. But the side story with the siblings was not well done. It was meant to bring suspense I think—but didn’t. There was also too much repetition of the same ideas. By the end, while I liked Georgie and Gabriel, I was ready for their story to be done.

Thoroughly enjoyed the author’s writing style, loved the characters, and found the book delightful.
Decided to purchase the remainder of her books.
Author advised to follow her on X, formerly twitter, so I did but did not leave a post.
Immediately, author blocked me for no reason. Guess she was having a bad day.

Lady Georgiana is known for her escapades among her family. This particular evening she's at a masquerade dressed as a boy. Shocked, she is unable to stop looking at the guests. Where are their clothes? She's rescued, then willingly seduced by a gentleman with "glossy black hair streaked with silver-grey." Thinking they will never meet again, she attends a house party and is introduced to the host, Gabriel, the Duke of Northriding, the gentleman from the masquerade. Imagine his surprise when he recognizes Georgie! In need of a bride, maybe he's already found his duchess, but Georgie's not so willing to say yes to his proposal.
A frustrating, scorching read with interesting results.
    Explicit sex.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.

I don't have too many grips. It's a regency, age-gap romance. They probably should have put age-gap in the title instead of "gorgeously funny". The characters were decent and spice scenes were good. The hammering home of the unfairness of the standards of women (particularly some of wealth) in society was okay but it kinda felt like it was a cast of characters that were all "I'm not like the other girls".

What truly killed it for me was the amount of exclamation points. You might think that's silly but you'll understand if you try to read the first few chapters. It's distracting to read. I can't tell if they are used to be "funny" or not.

Everyone in the book seems to be excited or yelling all the time. It makes it sound like a spoof book in a way. Like is this supposed to be funny and I just can't tell? Now, obviously use them when necessary and you could've given many more to one character. Like Louisa could've been a dramatic aunt so everything she said ends with !! As that's her character. I would've got that but no this was every character even Gabriel. Who is supposed to the serious and sexy male lead.

Sorry it was so distracting I starting speed reading about 50% in because I wanted to finish and move on.

If your like me and find certain humor difficult to understand in books you will have a hard time with this book. I don't actually know what's funny about it and adding in excessive !!! on top of it just made me cringe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and scandalous, with great female characters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 16, 2024
I really enjoyed the setting(s) and the social world, which were described with lots of interesting historical details. The story is great, a sort of missed connection/ awkward reconnection plot with lots of funny moments and sexual tension. The Duke himself I found a bit stodgy and hard to read at first (although I think the second part was probably intentional) but all the female characters are brilliant. I especially loved how the women actually confide in each other and talk about things (including sex) like actual people! Emma Orchard is brilliant at reminding us that people in the past had just as complex inner lives as we do. The sex scenes are also racy (like, really!!!) If you're used to the shrinking violets in the Bridgerton books strap in for a very different (and more realistic) vision of female desire. Definitely a book to buy a friend for her birthday.

4.0 out of 5 stars A writer with lot of promise but a book that lacks a storyline to hold the reader's interest
Reviewed in Canada on June 16, 2024
This is a very odd book. It is well written, and though the characters are overdrawn, they are appealing. The problem is that, for most of the work, there is literally no plot, so the reader is left wondering why the writer is dragging the book out long past when it should have finished when, suddenly, a small plot emerges to attempt to create an ending. Unfortunately, it is so slight that all the writer's undoubted writing skills just leave me regretting the book that this might have been. All that said, even though I got impatient with it halfway through, I will look out for other works by this author (at least on Kindle Unlimited).

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Spicy Regency Romp
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 28, 2024
A Duke Of One’s Own is the latest compelling regency romance from author Emma Orchard. Set in 1816, in the middle of the regency era, our story is perfect for both seasoned regency readers and readers who are newer to the genre and it is packed full of all of your favourite regency romance tropes. This includes an age gap romance between a younger rebellious heroine and a brooding older Duke and a forced marriage as a result of these characters being found in a compromising situation.

Emma Orchard is an incredible storyteller who had me hooked from the very first chapter. Her vivid descriptions made the Yorkshire coastal castle setting of Northriding Castle come alive on the page. The chapters set here felt very Gothic in style which I loved.

This is a lighter regency romance read which is perfect if you’re looking for something quick and steamy (no pun intended!). I easily read the whole book in a single sitting of a couple of hours thanks to how fast-paced and engaging the narrative was.

Lady Georgiana Pendlebury, or Georgie as she’s known by her loved ones, is our feisty and headstrong debutante FMC. Our brooding, swoon-worthy silver fox MMC is Gabriel Mauleverer, the Duke of Northriding. The way Gabriel talked about Georgie was gorgeous and he fell first, and harder, which was really well portrayed within the story.

Georgie and Gabriel had great chemistry and seeing such open and honest communication between the two of them was wonderful. We have lots of really hot spicy scenes throughout the book and they navigated the contrast of experience between Georgie and Gabriel (as a more experienced and older MMC) very well. Their great communication continued within their steamier encounters, particularly around consent, which was great to see within a regency romance.

A Duke Of One’s Own has great LGBTQIA+ representation within the story which was fantastic to see, especially as the representation came without any real comment outside of just total familial acceptance.

This is the second instalment of the The Runaway Heiress series but the story also works well as a standalone story and this was my introduction to the series.

Overall, A Duke Of One’s Own is a fantastic spicy regency romp, perfect when you want a lighter historical read which is still packed full of steam and romance. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series has in store.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 9, 2024
I enjoyed this story. It is generally well written, except for using the French version of the word 'chaperone' and constantly using chaperon. It is very strange to find it written in this way.
For Duke Gabriel, his first meeting with Georgie was very unusual and he felt a strong urge to protect her. For Georgie, she was conscious that she had been in an awkward situation and he had rescued her. In that chance meeting they did not reveal their identities but both felt the pull of attraction and longed to meet again.
The Duke needed a bride and an heir so a house party was organised and suitable young ladies were invited. Georgie was invited because her aunt was a friend of the family. Suddenly Georgie and Gabriel came face to face with each other and realised how dangerous it would be if it was discovered how they had met. For Georgie, it was embarrassing but for Gabriel - he was smitten.
A few days later he proposed to Gerogie but she rejected him believing that he would continue to be a rake even after marriage. Gabriel was devastated but still needed to find a wife. At a ball, he talked with Georgie again and they were caught together and agreed to marry. However, there was danger, blackmail and a shooting before they were able to settle into married life. A good story.

3.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read!

A lovely enjoyable read! 2 very strong characters and a great secret that it was great to be a part of. It had a little spice and even a plot twist that added to the story. I was undecided if I wanted to give this book 3 or 4 stars so I went for 3.5. A great story to lose yourself in but I felt the end was a little rushed and found myself wanting a little more.
