About the author

Following a successful career spanning the legal, publishing and financial services industries, Gina embraced the opportunity to unleash her quirky sense of fun with these creative, perceptive and humorous stories on everyday family life.
When not penning the latest adventures of her beloved character, Lulu La Ru, Gina loves nothing more than being active (hiking, biking, skiing and wind-surfing), satisfying her addiction to yoghurt and dark chocolate (no, not together!) and obsessing over the spreadsheets and lists she endlessly creates in an attempt to keep her life and creative projects in perfect harmony (albeit with varying degrees of success).
An intrepid traveller and true lover of nature, Gina is always planning a new adventure and will use any opportunity to escape and seek inspiration from the world around her.
At home in Auckland, New Zealand, Gina leads a dynamic family life, sharing her journey with her highly energetic husband and two equally vivacious step-daughters. A chilled-out Labradoodle, rounds out the household, providing some calm amid the hustle and bustle.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025If you are tired of reading the same old, wicked stepmothers in books meet Lulu La Ru! This stepmother is creative, kind, stylish, organized, and above all she loves her stepdaughters!
Readers can learn a cool new way to talk about stepmoms or as Lulu likes to say a super terrific extra parent! The book is packed with humor and heart.
This short picture book takes readers through some of the ups and downs of becoming a new stepmom. Fun for adults who understand the nuances of being a parent, but the language is accessible to younger readers, too. Fun rhyming words which are best when read aloud. Overall, a very positive and lighthearted book. The biological mom is not mentioned here. The text does mention moments when the stepmom misses the perfectly organized carefree life she enjoyed when she was single. But it does emphasize that her new family brings her into a more fulfilling life.
Since the author is based in New Zealand, foreign readers will get to learn new terms like utes and togs.
Some key lessons that are great for all stepmoms and their blended families.
It is good to be organized, but give yourself space to be a little messy. Sometimes there is beauty and chaos.
Stepmoms need their own tribe. Every mom has a different experience of being a parent. No two moms are exactly the same. Nonetheless stepmoms need support in other areas that are different than the experiences of biological moms and adoptive moms.
The book also alludes to the traditional, wicked stepmother in movies and stresses the urgency of fixing this narrative and create more stories to help stepmoms and their families see themselves in a better way. I can’t wait to read the second book in this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2024The fanciful style of this wee book (plentiful use of rhyming text, variations in font, and slick illustrations) bounces along making it a fun and quick read. You come away with a sense that you’d be lucky to have an extra parent!
I look forward to the next edition.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2024A well-written and thought-provoking book that shines a light on the challenges faced by step-mums, but in a fun and entertaining way. A must-read for all struggling step-mums out there :)
