A Forest of Grimm Desires (Black Forest Fantasies Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

“He's the one who steals your dreams, twisting desires and eliciting screams. You ask his name, but no one knows. Speak it once, and away he goes.”

In a forest where Rapunzel paints gruesome visions in her tower and Red Riding Hood reigns over a harem of werewolves, a young woman once slated for the witch's oven finds herself working with the notorious goblin king to discover the trickster's name and keep the rising darkness from consuming them all. That, and trying very hard not to ogle him while he's sleeping.

Seriously, though, how small were those short pants?

Dark fairytales, saucy banter, and SPICE

*Features a primary M/F romance, as well as a secondary M/M romance.

"It's like a mature Ella Enchanted, and I am here for it." ~ Hayley Reese Chow, author of Into the Churn

"The tales you thought you knew collide in this steamy, magical romp through a forest full of witches, weres, and unfairly sexy goblins. Stavs keeps you on your toes through twists, trysts, and shifting allegiances in this fast-paced, seductive read that you may just finish in a single sitting--I did!" ~ Allison Martine, author of The Bourbon Books

I immensely enjoyed reading the newest novel by EP Stavs, “A Forest of Grimm Desires.” This is the first work of theirs that I’ve had the pleasure of picking up, and I can promise you it won’t be my last! Truth be told, this isn’t my normal go-to genre to enjoy, and I’m delighted to have dived straight in with both feet. What a treat! This fairy tale world may on the surface seem like one that is all too familiar, however the author quickly makes it their own by creatively integrating several well-known Brothers Grimm folk tales into an enchanting, witty, page-turning, and suspenseful yarn—filled with everything you’d expect, need, and much, much more. I am in awe of the author’s imagination! This novel was fun to read, and I found myself longing to get back to it each day. EP Stavs style of writing is just effortless, and their characters will stick with you. The rewards pay off handsomely at the story’s conclusion, one that is entirely satisfying. I believe this is just the beginning of a series and trust me—you need to get aboard right now! Don’t miss this one!

‘A Forest of Grimm Desires’ by E.P. Stavs is a unique, very-adult twist on well-known fairy tales. There are nods to many of the classics, some overt and others fun easter eggs to find. In all cases, the author makes the stories her own by creating complexity, darker turns, a fair amount of spice, and some tongue-in-cheek humor.

The main couple, Gretchen and Redcap, are both likeable and their relationship is a fun mix of witty banter and longing and heat. A secondary couple of Evander and Lyall had me more hooked, though. Their problems and struggles, especially Evander’s fear of himself and his magic, made me feel for them a little more deeply, and I was utterly invested in their love story. For both, there are some explicit scenes, so if that’s not your literary cup of tea, be forewarned. There is plenty of story to support them, which suited me perfectly.

If you love fairy tale retellings with a mature flair, this book is for you. I’m definitely looking forward to the next one.

a twist on all the classic grimm fairy tales with some mystery, murder, and romance.

EP's writing has a fun voice that makes her book quite enjoyable. fantasy get tend to take itself too seriously sometimes, i appreciate the breathing room an author can bring in with humor. esp with darker source material like grimm fairy tales (this doesn't get too dark, but there's some violence and classic grimm body horror).

all the characters were very loveable, and while the main couple is MF i think almost every other side character is queer. gretchen and redcap were adorable, i loved their dynamic, the chemistry, and even their awkward bashfulness at times.

if you're looking for a fast standalone adult fantasy romance adventure, this is for you.

i will definitely be reading the next book in this series.

What a great adventure! This is a story full of interesting characters, reimagined from classic fairy tales. It has a fun, modern twist, and it plays with the idea that a fairly tale world exists at the edges of our reality. A great concept!

Be ready for a fair amount of spice (not excessive, but rather explicit, which I like but I know others might not), especially between the main couple, Gretchen and Redcap.

And speaking of couples. Gretchen and Redcap are cute together, but my absolute favorites are Lyall and Evander. OMG. I would read a whole spinoff trilogy on those two!

Definitely a wild ride, but an entertaining one. Five stars!

I loved these characters! I loved this story! I should state, I don’t read spice. But I’ve read the other fantasy romance novels Stavs has written (the Shendri series remains one of my favorite series), and knew I couldn’t miss this one. This book does have several spicy romance scenes. The characters, and the plot, gripped me so much I didn’t mind skimming over them! I’m so glad I read this! If you don’t love spice, you can skim over those bits. Even skimming them, the romance is powerful. Some of Redcap’s lines were so swoon-worthy! I read this as it released on Kindle Vella, and looked forward to reading the next episode each day. Gretchen and Redcap have chemistry from the start. And Lyall and Evander are so sweet! Evander’s battle with darkness is incredibly intriguing. If you’re looking for a fast-paced fantasy romance with memorable characters, look no further!

Gretchen is a witch with no magic, sent by the coven to trick Redcap, the goblin king, into giving her his cap. Except once meeting him, she decides to team up with him instead to stop Tenebris. Taken captive, she bides her time to escape. Meanwhile, Tenebris sets things in motion that could harm those she cares about. And all so he can leave the forest. Finding his name is the key to it all.

Steamy and captivating. Such a good story!

Stavs is one of those authors where I can pick up any of their books and know I will love them. I loved A Forest of Grimm Desires. I finished it in a day as I just couldn't put it down! The writing flows effortlessly and I found myself tearing through the pages. Gretchen was a fun female lead, she was sassy and knew her own mind. It was refreshing and fun to read a fairytale retelling (of sorts) with a strong female MC. And don't get me started on Redcap... I now have a huge crush on the goblin king. An all-around great story with (very) likeable characters and a fantastic plot. Looking forward to the next book!

I’d been looking forward to reading this latest release from EP as I love her Shendri series. This is intended to be a little more adult, though it’s still very mild. I gobbled it up in half a day, not wanting to put it down until I was done. The twists are delicious. This is a book that’s well worth reading.
