A Foreign Country (Mr & Mr Detective Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 59 ratings

Private Detective John Right’s life is pretty good. He loathes paperwork and could do without wasting his weekends catching out cheating spouses, but business is booming and he’s sharing his life with Jason, a man he’s still crazy about after three years. The only downside is his lover’s baffling choice of friends and the fact that John is convinced Jason is keeping secrets from his dark past. When a late-night phone call leads them to a kidnap victim with amnesia, and a dangerous man from Jason’s previous life suddenly resurfaces, they have much more than just secrets to deal with. And after their mysterious house guest starts to show more than a passing interest in the detective couple, John is left struggling when his relationship, as well as his detecting skills, are put to the test. Are they strong enough to resist the temptation of an enigmatic stranger? Maybe. If they don’t get killed in the meantime. –––––––––– Novel – 68k

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

After spending years creating stories in her head, Alex started writing them down and then found she couldn’t stop. Despite the late start, she now writes m/m romance about found families, sometimes with an historical feel—and the occasional werewolf.

Free from aspirations of literary greatness, Alex simply hopes to spin a good yarn of love and life, wrapped up with a happy ending. And if her characters have to go through Hell to get there, she’s a-okay with that.

Alex writes and walks on the South Coast of England—even when her heart and spellcheck are in New York.

You can now find her dark m/m romance under Alexis Jane, if you like love…but darker.

Really enjoyed this second book of the series, very suspenseful and a different sort of mystery and investigation. That’s because there’s a main plot and a separate but connected sub plot for John’s former partner Chris. It was kind of hard to believe that John and Jay still didn’t know more about each other after three whole years. I would have believed it more if the author used a shorter time frame. There’s not much for sex scenes except for some three-way action with Corey near the end. Can’t wait to find out what Morty is up to.

Secrets are revealed, crimes are committed, naughtiness nuanced, intrigue abounds with a delicious ending.
John and Jason from GAZES INTO YOU have been together now for three years. They’ve talked about marriage but something keeps holding Jason back. Together they work and live in a building John bought for his PI business, Right Detective Agency. Out of the blue they get a strange call from a former acquaintance of Jason’s. What happens next sets in motion so many outrageous and scary events.
Will an “invited guest” come between John and Jason? What secrets is Jason keeping from John? Oh. Man. That epilogue…sure didn’t see THAT coming! I hope it is a prelude to the next book in this series. Btw, not to worry, there is no cliffhanger. Ms. Jane brings everything to a nice closure with just a hint of something to ponder…for the next book, I hope. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book and it comes highly recommended for lovers of older man/younger man explicit books with suspense and intrigue. I give it 4.5 stars.

I really enjoyed the first book of this series but I liked this even better. John and Jason have been together for three years now, they work and live together, and I love their relationship. This story is also a good mystery that gets resolved very nicely. We’re left with a few questions but no cliffhanger and the promise of book three. Can’t wait.

John and Jason are back -Yay! - and they've got a case and a half to deal with while maybe getting some wedding plans made eventually.

A little bit different from your normal m/m murder mystery. Really liked the characters and looking forward to more books.

Things are going well between John and Jason, the agency is working as it should and they have been talking about marriage, but Jason is strangely reluctant.

And then, someone from Jason's past shows up and it's evident that there are things about his past that Jason is keeping from John. From there, things go downhill in a very quick and scary way.

Thrilling, exciting and really well written, this is a fantastic story in what is beginning to be an excellent series.

I received an ARC of this story, and this is my honest and voluntary review.

I enjoyed Gazes into You and read it several times, so I was eager to read the new book in the series. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it. I forced myself to keep reading until I got to the 50% mark, but since it was getting worse instead of better I returned it so I could get a different Kindle Unlimited selection.

The problem is that A Foreign Country leaves behind everything that was good in the first book, continues all of its worst aspects, magnifies and expands all those flaws, and adds nothing to mitigate the damage.

The formerly interesting and appealing characters are now brain-dead sex addicts, and there is no interesting story to follow, just one lurid, depressing episode of compulsive, obsessive sex after another. There's a new "victim" for them to rescue, as John rescued Jason in the first book, but he immediately turns into just a hot candidate for some three-way action. ALL they care about now is sex, which makes the book depressing and annoying, and creepy.

The vast majority of gay men are NOT like that! In the first book, John, Jason, Chris, and the rest were human beings; in this book they are nothing but mindless, twitching, dripping, throbbing engorged pen!ses looking for holes to plow. It is NOT a world I want to be part of, and they are not people I want to know.

In the first book, the writer insisted on painting John as a pervert (a term she used relentlessly) simply because he enjoyed covertly looking at beautiful men. It's even worse in this book.

A writer who feels that way about a perfectly normal and healthy and essential aspect of being a gay man should find another subject to write about and leave gay men alone. There's already plenty of abuse in our world. We don't need any more from a writer who seems to have a twisted, unhealthy obsession with the most intimate details of our sex lives but absolutely no idea what gay men are really like.

I really like the detective duo of John and Jason. They are very likable guys , who have been put through the wringer.
I am glad they have strong supporting characters also. I have enjoyed both books in this series and hope the author continues it. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome return to John and Jason 4.5*
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 27, 2019
Seems like ages since the first book of this series came out, not that I'm complaining (ok maybe a little, although I was happy to wait until J and J were ready) because well, Alphas' Homestead series (sigh). Anyway I re-read the first one to refresh my memory and am really glad I did as it was a pleasure reacquainting myself with these two.
The story picks them up about three years later and they seem to be getting on really well. I liked that Jason understands John and his quirks, shall we say. Personally I don't think he's a pervert, particularly based on his past, all of which was explained in book one and is a must read to understand this one a bit more I think. Their careers are doing ok and partly because of Johns job, a blast from Jason's past contacts him with a problem and needs their help. They do and as a result a stranger enters their space who has quite an impact from both a professional and a personal POV. Jason has even more shocks in store and has to eventually confess to John about his own dubious past and the repercussions it causes.
This is the only spoiler I will leave and only because this is the reason why it's a 4.5 and not a 5* for me. I really really didn't like their threesome. I'm not averse to them (and more partners) in context, just not for these two. Watching others would have been ok but without any participation by them. It didn't feel right somehow. Will have to wait and see if there is any backlash from it even though I don't think there will be.
Apart from that I enjoyed the storyline and catching up with support characters Chris and Marty again too. Chris had his own tale to tell as well and I am certainly interested to find out what is going on with Marty.
Looking forward to the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow great second book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2019
Wow I didn’t expect the epilogue such a teaser, but not I stress a cliffhanger. If you are anything like me I don’t like not knowing what happens next but a gentle tease into the possibilities of the next story is fine. In this story John and Jason are more settled but there are many secrets and hidden truths between them. These start to come out as the case they are investigating unfolds. It’s an unusual case and Alex Jane writes this style so well. Kept me wondering what was coming next, which is what I like. The story line in this book is wrapped up bu I just didn’t have a clue that what was revealed in the epilogue was coming.
Although you can read this as a stand-alone in my opinion you would miss out on the history between John and Jason Mr & Mr Detective book 1, Gazes into You.

Well drawn characters and an intriguing plot, couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait for the next in the series.
