Shirley Ledlie was born in Nottingham, England. She's a former Bella UK Magazine columnist, patient advocate and author of a memoir A Hair's Whisper - From Cancer to the Courtroom, Naked in the Wind and three short travelogues The Unexpected Pilgrim, Mischief in Manhattan and Ocean of Stars (A Star Trek cruise).

Her first memoir Naked in the Wind is a modern-day David and Goliath story. The main purpose of this candid book was to raise awareness about a distressing permanent side-effect of a breast cancer treatment drug which seemed to be a taboo subject in the medical world while also trying to help other women suffering from the same disfigurement as herself. Some readers have claimed it's an Erin Brockovich-style tale.

Three short light-hearted travelogues followed in between writing many media articles and taking part in podcast interviews that focused on the narrative of her first book. It also helped to bring about one of the largest multi-district litigations currently ongoing in the USA.

Shirley loves spending time with her family and taking trips in her campervan.

I have been eagerly awaiting this sequel to Shirley Ledlie’s Naked In The Wind, and I have now romped through it with undiminished admiration and respect for this awe-inspiring woman. A Hair’s Whisper tells the story of her continuing fight to gain justice for all women with permanent hair loss resulting from a specific chemotherapy drug. Pulling no punches, Ms Ledlie takes on the lawyers and representatives of the drug’s manufacturer and scores a major triumph in flouting the demands of the pharmaceutical giant. I loved the book, the descriptions of the legal battles and also the extra glimpses into her life and travels, especially in New Orleans. Congratulations, Shirley Ledlie. I remain in awe of your courage and hope there will be more on your campaign for patients’ rights to come. You are doing what most of us would never have the bravery to do. Very highly recommended.

Imagine beating cancer, coming to terms with never having a full head of hair again and then having to watch your back because a huge drug company is trying to silence you! I loved reading this sequel to Shirley’s first book where she continues her fight to get Sanofi to admit the truth about the side effects of their drug. A quick but enjoyable read.

I remember reading an essay a long time ago that spoke about how adversity affects people in different ways. Adversity can either defeat you, you can overcome it, or you can not only overcome it, but rise above the fray to help others facing similar challenges. The author of this memoir seems to fall into the third category.

While reading her memoir, I was filled with admiration for the author’s tenacity when faced with so many obstacles, first in surviving breast cancer and the aftermath of permanent hair loss from a chemotherapy treatment where the aftereffects were not totally divulged by the drug’s maker, and then from the obstacles placed in her path from the huge pharmaceutical company when she sought justice. I was riveted by her descriptions of the courtroom drama, both in France and in the United States. Her writing drew me into each scene, and I began to yearn for her and other survivors to see justice with each court case.

As a Native American woman who experienced sexual assault and now actively advocates for justice for missing and exploited Indigenous women, I understand this author’s quest to help others. This memoir is an excellent beginning point to become familiar with this issue, and I hope that the author will continue to provide readers with more information by continuing her book series.

When a pharmaceutical company for breast cancer knowingly causes her to lose her hair, S.A. Ledlie holds them accountable for not disclosing their knowledge about the risk of hair loss. Her compassion is unwavering as she helps others by testifying at their trial or through support group websites by listening and educating them. When my son was murdered, the life insurance company refused to pay, and I, too, had to take on a big company. It’s scary because Ledlie and I don’t have these companies’ resources. But we chose to fight anyway. If you have breast cancer, are facing your own battle, or just want to hear one woman’s inspirational story, pick up a copy of A Hair’s Whisper.

A HAIR'S WHISPER by Shirley Ledlie depicts an epic battle waged on tumultuous ground. Not only does the author combat her cancer, she does so without the full disclosure of what might be the collateral damage. When faced with a life-threatening illness, we expect everyone on our team to be fully transparent, to share everything so that expectations can be managed, and so that informed decisions can be made. A Hair’s Whisper tells the tale of when Big Pharma makes those decisions for us. The author is exemplary in her courageous battle for her life and then continues the ongoing fight for justice. Highly recommend. (I was lucky enough to be awarded a copy of this book through a contest.)

I read A Hair’s Whisper the day before my final chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer and feel compelled to leave a comment here to thank Shirley and her indomitable spirit.
From my first round of treatment (not Taxotere) I was offered the cold cap. I was so overwhelmed with what was happening to me and, having been told that the odds of keeping my hair were so stacked against me, decided against it. The nurses shrugged saying that I’d have to have it later anyway. I thought no more of the conversation, my hair fell out 10 days later and I got on with the unpleasant 3 weekly cycle of treatment.
After 4 rounds I was changed to Taxotere and on day 1 the nurse reminded me of my “obligation” to wear the cold cap. A bell rang in my head and I asked why. She immediately stopped what she was doing, pulled up a chair and gently explained that the treatment could prevent the hair follicles from repairing themselves but that the cold cap would help fight against this. So seriously did the nursing staff take this that I had to wear the cold cap for 15mins before any Taxotere was administered. It was also changed, without fail, every 20mins for a new one fresh out of the freezer.
My hair started growing back between the 3rd and 4th treatment, it is still too early to say what colour or style it will be but there are no bald spots. Oh and the tumour is small enough to be operated on too!
Victory and Power to you Shirley from someone who has benefited from your Never Give Up Spirit. Go You Girl xxx

I was keen to find out what happened after this author’s first book ended because Naked in the Wind was an eye opener for me.
Shirley is a warrior, suffering the injustice of not being fully informed about treatment options open to her and a coverup of possible outcomes.
This book takes us along as Shirley continues her crusade for justice. Sharing with us her full range of emotions, she continues to battle on. I am in awe of her strength, courage and resilience.
This book is easy to read, gripping and important.

Ì read Shirely's first book not knowing I was to become a breast cancer victim myself by the time A Hair's Whisper would come out!
Both books are a fascinating insight into what we all hope is NOT going on behind the scenes. (It can't just be this one drug and this one company playing with our lives).
I read A Hair's Whisper in a day, Shirely has written about her ongoing experience of standing up to a massive money making machine with honesty, emotion and even a little humour which will appeal to any reader.
    It's certainly opened my eyes!

I read Shirley Ledlie's previous memoir 'Naked in the Wind' some time ago and was impressed by her courage then. In this latest memoir 'A Hair's Whisper' she describes her ongoing battle with Sanofi, one of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies. I am now totaly in awe of her determination to seek justice, not only for herself but for the thousands of others whose lives have been affected by their drug Taxotere. It's astounding the lengths this company go to to silence her. Horrifying really!
However this remarkably brave lady refuses to be browbeaten and continues to fight for the truth to be told. It's gripping and nerve wracking. I could have wept for her as she summoned up her reserves of courage to face them once again in the courtroom. She is an inspiration - a warrior!
