- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2018This was an enjoyable read and covered a gray area between hunters and the paranormal others they are commanded to kill by the order of the Catholic church. Ryker is just such a hunter and he is proud of his job eliminating evil Paranormals that the church orders him to kill, however when he is told to kill a witch named Jenna he is shocked and confused. He and Jenna had been lovers, then suddenly 2 years ago she left him.No reason, no notice and he is still in love with her and can't believe that she is evil in any way. His brothers who are also hunters tell him that they will take the job but he insist that he be the one to do it. When he goes to Jenna's house to kill her, he realizes he can't without proof that she is evil. Jenna knew what he was there for and told him to go ahead and kill her. She explains that up until 2 years ago she didn't know that she was a witch and she left him when she found out but she always knew that someday he or another hunter would be there to kill her. Instead of killing her right away they spend the night making love and he realizes that he can't kill her and he still loves her and he wants to find a way to save her. Unfortunatly there are other hunters out to kill Jenna and soon they are in a fight for both their lives. The new hunter is a surprise to Jenna as it is someone she knows and soon both she and Ryker are in fighting a true evil to survive. The book was a very interesting read with some twist and turns and the passion between Jenna and Ryker was hot. The only thing I wished for in this book was the same as other reviewers commented on and that I wish it had been longer, but as it was originally written in the Harlequin line of books, you realize that those books were traditionally written more as more of a novella, you understand why this book was a little shorter, perhaps if the writer decided to continue the storyline, she might someday write about one of Rykers brothers who are also hunters and perhaps they will be a little longer. As for writing style it was great, Gwen Knight is a gifted writer and I usually one-click her books without even having to read the blurb. With this particular book I was given an arc copy and my review of this book is my honest opinion of what I felt about the book and how much I enjoyed it. If you are looking for a book that you can easily finish on breaks during your day and finish before you go to bed, this is the perfect book for you, and even though it is shorter is still has enough passion and suspense that you would find in a longer book and it's a story that will stay in your mind for a while and you won't regret purchasing and reading this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2018The storyline is so thrilling. It has awesome characters with fantastic personalities. This story will keep you glued to it's pages.
Ryker is a Hunter of paranormals for the church. His whole family for generations have been hunters. Hunter had only one woman he ever loved. Jenna was his life then two years before. She walked out of his life disappearing. Now his brother tells him they received a new paranormal target. Ryker is shocked to learn it is Jenna! He feels it must not be true! When his brother tells him she is a witch.
Jenna loved Ryker even when she knew what his family was. Until two years ago she did not know she was a witch! It broke her heart when she had to leave him. Now he is back with orders to kill her.
Can Ryker bring himself to kill the woman he loves? If not can he protect her from his brothers , and the other hunters?
You will love this super exciting, thrilling, funny, suspenseful, touching, and steamy hot Romance. It is a five star plus story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2018A quick disclaimer: I purchased this e-book a while back, when it was released under the Harlequin Nocturne line (and re-read it this weekend). I don't know if the author made any changes in this release vs. what I have. The page count looks about the same, however.
And length is where this book could have been improved. I like novellas and short novels, as long as the plot still covers what it needs to cover. The plot did resolve a lot of what I wanted it to, but I did feel like the ending completely glossed over or ignored some important points that kept me from getting a sense of completion when I finished reading. There's the potential for follow-up books with other characters introduced in this story, which could address some of those loose threads. But as it stands at the end of this book, those unaddressed elements keep me from being satisfied with the ending.
I did enjoy the author's writing style, and I like both the hero and heroine of the story. There's not a ton of character development, but it felt sufficient for the length of the book. And the editing was clean in the edition I have, which is a big plus to me.
Overall, this was an enjoyable short read. The price point may be a bit high for the word count, but I think that's a matter of personal preference. I'd probably give this 3.5 stars, rather than 4, if I could.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2018I am not sure what I would do if I was required to kill someone that I loved. Being trained my whole for something, only to want to go against it.
You can feel all the emotions that are going thru Ryker with every turn of the page. You sit there and wonder what he is going to do when he finds the one true love of his life.
But think about it just like he has to think, just cause the church says their evil, does that really make it so?
Until Next Time.... Tabi
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2018I really like coming across a paranormal that will right away grab ahold of you like this one will. As soon as I started on this one Ryker catches your curiosity with how will he handle his greatest assignment. Jenna will seal it all in when her story comes along with her part in this. You are slowly put on edge wondering what will become of the two with will they survive. I got my questions answered with now liking how this author really does it well with paranormal.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2018This short story feels so much larger. We have a different mythology. Vamps, wares, and witches aka "Darklings" are bad and Hunters put them down. But we all know sometimes dark things come in shades of gray and are awfully close to not dark at all. This tale of second chance love makes Ryker examine his beliefs and his heart and stand up for what he knows is right. Loved these characters, I hope for more of this "world".
I was gifted this book and voluntarily reviewed it.
