This is The Place Paperback – January 7, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
When Jay first met Imre, Jay’s dad was dying of cancer and he’d only just kicked the booze. Imre smelt like an old sock and could argue with him about anything, but in his own way he helped Jay be a bit happier. As they hitchhiked together across Norway, they ate by fishing food out of dumpsters and spent their nights sleeping in bus shelters. They made it to the Arctic together, and then they never saw each other again.
That was five years after Jay walked to Spain, and six months after his attempted drive across Africa. This is The Place is a record of these journeys: a winding narrative composed of twelve portraits of different places and the people residing within them. It is a story about the human; whether in Sudan, France, Kenya or Ireland, This is The Place explores the commonalities between us. It is proof of the kindness of strangers, a meditation on pilgrimage and a record of a young man’s numerous, failed attempts to change.
By proxy, J S May has also documented a world now gone; a world taken for granted but with evermore tangible cracks. Taking place before Trump, Brexit and the pandemic, This is The Place chronicles the end of an era and the first movements of a new global trajectory. Whether being picked up by Neo Nazis while hitchhiking or walking the Camino de Santiago, May repeatedly finds himself within the inescapable context of the geopolitical climate of the time.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2023Absolutely phenomenal read. Writing style is both thoughtful and hilarious at times. What I loved about this book is that the commentary about the atypical travels is poignant and illuminating, such that I felt that I was in the back of the car hitchhiking with him. I would recommend it to lovers of adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't really like travel writing but I loved this.
I don't know if I would have chosen this book off my own bat, but a friend recommended it to me and I loved it.
J S May is a man who seems to relish setting himself gruelling travel challenges, and not the glamorous sort that get you in the news either. But he is also witty, humane, self-deprecating and brutally honest.
Instead of a narrative focus on heroically reaching his goal, he focuses on his reactions to what he sees and feels... the colourful people he meets, the deprivation/boredom/loneliness he experiences, his vulnerability and his reliance on the kindness of strangers. His reactions range from funny to startling to bleak, but they are always honest. Although he does a good job of describing places, people and landscapes, the book is more about his inner life and what he is learning along the way.
It's a completely refreshing take on writing about travel, and thoroughly entertaining and emotionally engaging. I love his choices of dirty, difficult, cheap and unglamorous journeys, and I love his frankness and keen sense of humour.
It's hard to do justice to the book in a short description, but you should definitely read it, even if you don't like travel writing, which I don't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and sensitive writing
It’s difficult to say exactly what the book is about, but it’s a really pleasurable and refreshing read. The writing style is witty, to the point of making me laugh or at least wryly smile when reading it, but the writing is also very personal. In general terms the book deals with themes of adventure, culture, loneliness and various other ideas as they arise. In a more specific sense, it’s an interesting account of travelling in different parts of the world with quirky stories, strange characters, and practical struggles encountered along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to spend an afternoon
Couldn't put it down, the structure, casual tone and dry humour kept me captivated for the 3-4 hours it took to read. Strongly recommend chilling with Jay for an afternoon spent lounging in the sun

5.0 out of 5 stars Indie travel masterpiece
Right from the beginning I loved J.S. May's writing style. The Bukowski and Kerouac vibes were evident from the start. J.S. takes you on an authentic and energetic journey, discussing at length the humanity and sense of place and belonging through shared experience spanning across the continents. J.S. eloquently uses humour and pathos in equal measure to describe a journey of the soul. Highly recommend.
