Editorial Reviews

Review

FIVE STAR REVIEW: There is lots of intrigue, action, conflict and subterfuge in this energetic book that follows on from the first book, Milijun, and although the first book no doubt sets out the history to the current story, it works as a standalone with enough explanations to provide a smooth transition. Jason clearly has a destiny and we follow his journey in this fascinating tale.
The author, Clayton Graham, has a real skill in developing characters from the abducted humans to the taciturn various alien beings, to even hinting at character traits in the robotic RNasias. The descriptive writing is excellent, truly painting a picture of this other world and its strange inhabitants in the reader's mind and transporting them to a realm where anything could happen and probably will. Clayton Graham has woven such an intriguing story with such believable characters that he must have an incredible imagination. There is such real depth to the story that one could imagine looking out on a clear night and seeing the glint of the space station amongst the stars.
I must admit I would not normally read this genre, but Clayton Graham has reeled me in with his other-worldly creation, causing me to say unreservedly that lovers of science fiction/fantasy will relish this one, and if they have not already done so, have them racing to read Book one also. Be prepared to leave the world as you know it behind and enter another where an alien could become your best friend or your worst enemy.
Amidst Alien Stars: Milijun Book 2 by Clayton Graham is highly recommended by Artisan Book Reviews - 5 Big Stars!

FIVE STAR REVIEW: Author Clayton Graham has created a superbly exciting sequel in the throes of deep space, which encompasses the best qualities of both space opera personal dramas and the hard science fiction of alien wars and political battles. On the one hand, you have Laura and her fellow humans, terrified and determined to survive, who are portrayed with realistic grit and terror, their atmosphere oppressive and dark. On the other, we look into the wider world of the races that seek to control those alien stars and the worlds that look upon them, with a plot structure that makes good sense and leaves lots of room for twists, disasters, and dangers of its own. In this combination, Amidst Alien Stars becomes a fully rounded work of science fiction that is sure to tick the boxes for many fans of the genre: a recommended read.
KC Finn: Readers' Favorite

FIVE STAR REVIEW: Milijun Book Two: Amidst Alien Stars is finally here. Laura Sinclair and her son Jason desperately try to navigate the dangerous planet where aliens threaten not only their survival, but the whole human race.
I encourage you to read Milijun: Book One and follow it up with Amidst Alien Stars: Milijun Book Two. Author Clayton Graham will capture your imagination, take you on an adventure with characters that are both human and alien, with a story so philosophical that it almost defies fiction.

As a youngster growing up in the cobbled streets of Stockport, UK, Clayton Graham read a lot of science fiction. He loved the ‘old-school’ masters such as HG Wells, Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov and John Wyndham. As he left those formative years behind, he penned short stories when he could find a rare quiet moment amidst life’s usual distractions.

He settled in Victoria, Australia, in 1982. A retired aerospace engineer who worked in structural design and research, Clayton has always had an interest in science fiction and where it places humankind within a universe we are only just starting to understand.

Clayton loves animals, including well behaved pets, and all the natural world, and is a member of Australian Geographic.

Combining future science with the paranormal is his passion. Milijun, his first novel, was published in 2016. Second novel, Saving Paludis, was published in 2018. They are light years from each other, but share the future adventures of mankind in an expansive universe as a common theme.

The sequel to Milijun, entitled Amidst Alien Stars was released on December 1 2019. The third in series Alien Whispers: Conflict and Communion was published in November 2022.

In between novels Clayton has published short story collections 'Silently in the Night' and 'Looking for Life' where, among many other adventures, you can sympathize with a doomed husband, connect with an altruistic robot, explore an isolated Scottish isle and touch down on a far-flung asteroid.

He hopes you can share the journeys.

Set in the 22nd century, technologically advanced aliens invade earth and abduct a few humans from an army base in Australia. However, these aliens are not interested in colonizing Earth. They want to collaborate with Earth to explore the galactic space together. Unfortunately, their plan is not short of obstacles. Humans do not entirely trust their intentions. Perhaps their greatest challenge is mistrust from a fellow alien race. The author depicts this alien race not so different from humans – mistrust, betrayal, and perceived race superiority hampers the collective advancement of their world.
Amidst Alien Stars has a unique well-thought plot. Most authors would have focused on the superiority of an alien race. Graham Clayton takes a different approach where the aliens need humans. The humans are more guests on an alien ship than they are prisoners. Without humans, the aliens cannot achieve their goal of galactic exploration.
The main character in the book is Jason, an Australian young man who was the first to interact with the aliens. He mostly plays the role of a liaison between the humans and the aliens. Most of the other human characters are female, forced to breed hybrids. Then there are several characters from different alien races, some of which are artificial creations with strange abilities.
The story is set in the alien world. The characters interact in a spaceship orbiting the alien world but eventually, the events of the story have them spending time in different continents on the world of their abductors.
I liked the book for the unique approach to human-alien interaction. Also, the aliens in this book have different races and there’s bad blood between two of the races, with one feeling the “dominant” race is unfairly excluding them from their mission.
Overall, the writing is top-notch. The author particularly gives very vivid descriptions of characters and events so well that you're able to visualize everything that is happening.
It was hard to overlook the difficult and confusing names of the aliens. Names like Rjebnigerrsel are a mouthful. Rmela and Relna are simply confusing.
The ending was unpredictable and leaves you surprised and anticipating the sequel.

This is a unique novel with lots of complex situations and science facts described. With imaginative use of language to create a charming set of characters and plot, this book is definitely a beautiful work of science fiction. Laura Sinclair, her son Jason and other humans are struggling to survive and to fight against aliens who are threatening the whole human race on a new and dangerous planet. It is a fascinating story and the setting of this new world is presented through suggestive details. Each chapter is more exciting than the last one and the story soon gets the reader involved because it is mysterious, strange and, at one point, worrying… Written by Clayton Graham, “Amidst Alien Stars” is the second book in the Milijun series. It can be read as a standalone and I will certainly read the first one in the series. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery and science fiction genre.

The story is one that strikes fear in the minds of the human race - becoming prisoners and breeding stock for aliens. To top that off, the humans are caught in the middle of an alien war. This sets the scene for some interesting reading.

I did have an issue with the names of the alien being so similar, it made it confusing and I had to keep going back to figure out which one was which. I realize there was a purpose to this, but possibly the author could have made the names (or reasons for the names) different enough that the reader didn't end up being lost all the time. I also thought the somewhat laborious (and probably way too detailed) histories and bits of trivia slowed the pace considerably.

I'm sure many hardcore sci-fi fans will have no problems with the things that tripped me up. I just tend to prefer a different style of storytelling.

There are twists and turns to this story that keeps the characters and the reader guessing, which makes for interesting reading.

Overall, this book was well written and the characters were complex, it just had some issues that made it a bit less enjoyable for me.

Amidst Alien Stars is a thoughtful piece of science fiction that should appeal to lovers of the genre. The characters are well defined and they draw you into the story while the descriptions are vivid and paint a colourful picture of the author’s world.

The story builds in mystery and intensity through the author’s excellent prose. Furthermore, there is an emotional depth to Amidst Alien Stars that is not always prevalent in science fiction.

Although this is book two in the series it is sufficiently self-contained to read as a stand-alone.

Overall, Amidst Alien Stars is an original and well-crafted novel.

Surprise after surprise! I was utterly confounded! This premise is so intriguing, so many riddles..I love it! The writing is smart, clear, and, at moments, really lovely. Extremely well written and chock full of intrigue, suspense, spies, murder and wonderfully descriptive characters, places and events. This novel is fast paced, exciting and edge of your seat stuff! Not only is this an exciting, action-packed paged turner - I love the intelligence reflected, the witty dialogue, and the genuine depth in the characters’ emotions. This is an impeccable, perfectly-paced, emotional and gripping read, with a fantastic world building. I hope there’s a sequel to this series, to see how the different types of aliens and humans interact in a devastated Earth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great second book in the Milijun series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2019
Laura Sinclair and her son Jason, plus a group of desperate humans abducted from Earth in the previous book awake among the alien stars somewhere else where they are trying to forge a new future both for themselves but also for those back home on Earth. However, they are not with the one alien race and so have to solve the riddle of the group of races they are encountering and try not to become embroiled in their historic conflict that seems to be as valid now as it was many years before. The problem is who should they trust (if anyone) and what is the real plan for the hybrid children that have been brought into existence? Add to that there is a constant worry in the back of their minds - will they ever see Earth again and get home?

This is once again a complex story with many layers for you to dig through as you read this second book in the series - although you could get away with not reading the first one I really do think you need to read the first one to make sense of the events in this book as early as you can. I enjoyed the way they were sometimes working independently but were always working towards a common goal that would make sense of what was happening to them all. I enjoyed the mini-stories within stories that were very enjoyable. Well written it was very clear and easy to understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have read the first book in the series first!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2020
I will say from the start, I should have read the first book in the series before launching straight into the second book. It has a great premise and as a science fiction lover I really appreciated the refreshingly different concepts, however I found the level of detail daunting and I struggled to get into the characters and plot. I do think if I had read the first book I would have enjoyed this book so much more.

The idea that an alien race had created hybrid beings on a space station set a long way from Earth, with the aim of the human strengths complimenting the strengths of their race was interesting. Rather than the usual alien v human, to think that there could be partnership was really good. However, the humans, trapped on the space station and longing to return home, are seeking meaning and purpose as they fear for their role in the future where the aliens seem to hold all the cards. The adventure deepens as they seek answers and the stakes are raised.

As I said, I wish I had read the first book as I may have engaged better with the main characters, Jason & Laura. I may have understood more of what they had already gone through and I may have felt less like I was wading through an overly complex narrative where I felt confused and lost. It often felt like I was jumping into the middle of something where everyone else knew the back story but me. So my strong recommendation is to start with book 1 to get the most out of this excellent premise and high quality writing.
