A Newfound Land (The Graham Saga Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 562 ratings

It’s 1672, and Matthew Graham and his family have left Scotland. Having taken the drastic decision to leave their homeland due to religious conflicts, Alexandra and Matthew hope for a simpler, if harsher, life in the wilds of the Colony of Maryland.

Unfortunately, things don’t always turn out as you want them to, and the past has a nasty tendency to resurface at the most inappropriate moments. Both Matthew and Alex are forced to cope with the unexpected reappearance of people they had never thought to meet again, and the screw is turned that much tighter when the four rogue Burley brothers enter their lives.

Matters are further complicated by the strained relations between colonists and the Susquehannock Indians.

When Matthew intercedes to stop the Burleys from abducting Indian women into slavery he makes lifelong – and deadly – enemies of them all.

Once again Alex is plunged into an existence where death seems to threaten her man wherever he goes. Will Matthew see himself – and his family – safe in these new circumstances? And will the past finally be laid to rest?

Review

This is a fabulous time-traveling family saga to be enjoyed to the full, a little similar to the Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon; although I personally think these are better.

A Newfound Land will surprise you by taking you unaware and pulling you into its pages and by the time the cover closes you will find yourself an Anna Belfrage fan for life.

About the Author

Had Anna Belfrage been allowed to choose, she'd have become a professional time traveler. As this was impossible, she instead authored the acclaimed Graham Saga, a time-traveling series set in the seventeenth century. Her latest series is set in the 1320s and features Adam de Guirande, his wife Kit, and their adventures during Roger Mortimer's rise to power.

Greg Patmore, Audie Award winner, became an actor in his mid-forties, fulfilling a lifelong ambition, when he trained at Arts Educational Schools, and has enjoyed a varied career on stage, screen, and in the voice-over studio ever since.

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she'd have become a professional time-traveller. No luck there, so instead she became a financial professional with two absorbing interests; history and writing. These days, Anna combines an exciting day-job with a large family and her writing endeavours. Plus she always finds the time to try out new recipes, chase down obscure rose bushes and initiate a home renovation scheme or two.

Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga , set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy.

Anna has also published The Wanderer, a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense trilogy with paranormal and time-slip ingredients. Her September 2020 release, His Castilian Hawk is a story of loyalty and love set against the complications of Edward I’s invasion of Wales in the late 13th century.

Her most recent release, The Whirlpools of Time , is a time travel romance set against the backdrop of brewing rebellion in the Scottish highlands.

All of Anna’s books have been awarded the IndieBRAG Medallion, she has several Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choices, and one of her books won the HNS Indie Award in 2015. She is also the proud recipient of several Reader’s Favorite medals as well as having won various Gold, Silver and Bronze Coffee Pot Book Club awards.

A gifted writer, Anne Belfrage makes her characters come alive in a very realistic and enthralling way. Her weaving of history is masterful. The entire series takes me away for a wonderful respite from the current chaos of the pandemic, reminding me that we are not the first to experience hardship on this planet. But the authors story is not all gloom and doom. While historic hardship is clearly evident, love, kindness and joy also are prevalent throughout the entire series.

I'm a devotee of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series. While waiting for her new book, I found the Graham Saga. The books are good, entertaining reading that again deal with time travel. The manner in which time travel occurs in the Graham Saga is a little hard for me to accept. However, the characters are real. Their struggles, in a time when history is changing the world around them, gives the reader a glimpse into the past we've often only known from the history books that never deal
with the effect such times have on the lives of the ordinary people. They are people of strength and courage. People who choose to leave their homeland when right and justice no longer are the base of society. People who willing brave a new world to forge a life based on the rights and justice of their beliefs. I believe anyone who is a history buff (England and America 1600-1800) and enjoys the possibilities time travel offers, would enjoy these books.

This being the fourth in The Graham Saga, I must admit to having become totally addicted to the adventures of time-traveller Alex, her husband Matthew, and their numerous children. Yet again, Ms Belfrage presents us with a well-described historical setting – at times so tangible I am quite convinced it is at arm’s reach – and a fast-paced story that has me turning the pages well into the night.
For those of you that have as yet not read Ms Belfrage’s excellent saga, I can only say “What are you waiting for?”. Ms Belfrage provides enough back-story in each book to ensure it works as a stand-alone, but I would recommend reading all of them – they’re all so good! Personally, I fell in love with Matthew already some books back, and even if he at times drives me crazy by retreating into an overbearing 17th century man, I forgive him for it – it’s impossible not to. The strength of the saga lies in the fantastic portrayal of both Matthew and Alex. They have strengths and weaknesses, likeable and less likeable traits, but what always shines through is their love for each other, their passion, their dependency on each other.
Not only does Ms Belfrage give us characters to love and care for, she also delivers a good story. Personally, I love the time-travelling aspects of this series, and while saying too much would be something of a spoiler, I just loved how Ms Belfrage reintroduced a character from previous books in this one. It is also interesting to note that by now I’m quite convinced it is possible to paint time portals through time, so credible do I find Ms Belfrage’s depictions…
As always when I get to the end of one of Ms Belfrage’s books I am SO glad there are more books to come. I’ve already bought the next instalment & can’t wait to read it.

Alex and Matthew continue their love and family building a new home in the wilderness of Maryland. Resurgence of some past characters and new friendships and family members carry the Graham's through daily life, hard work, love and fear. The ever present worry of old foes and Indians. Some twists and turns in the plot are exciting.

I have read each book and have so enjoyed the time spent with Matthew and Alex. I would have liked more detail of their day to day life, maybe a little less detail of sex. The sex scenes are not bad, they play well with the story with out taking away from the story line, but sometimes it feels like it is being used as filler. I don't mind sex, I hate though when it is too detailed.
I love the history of each book. Exploring and getting to know different eras is the reason for consuming these books
If you are looking for some escapism, this is a good read. Enjoy!

"A Newfound Land" is the 4th in the Graham saga. I would suggest you start at the 1st book, "A Rip in the Veil," and set aside some time, because once you get caught up into the world of Matthew Graham and his time-traveling wife Alexandra, you will not want to stop reading. This story takes up where the 3rd book left off. Matthew and Alex were having trouble in their homeland of 1670 Scotland. Religious and political turmoil gave them no option but to pack and leave, and what better place to travel to than the new world - the Colony of Maryland? Unfortunately, some of their former adversaries make an appearance and the reader is left gripping the arm of the chair as the suspense builds, and new complications arise to increase the tension. We know these two are strong and steadfast, but we wonder how in the world they will make it through. It is a pleasure to see their children growing, and I look forward to reading the 5th book in the series, "Serpents in the Garden." Keep 'em coming!

I enjoyed this book, having said that I found it a wee bit boring with repeat sexual scenes every time the husband and wife came together, I don't mind a little sex and sizzle but enough is enough, could have moved a little faster and had a little more story to the whole scenario - but it is a relaxing read and I intend to read the next saga in line.

This is the first book I read about time travel. It was a book that I couldn't put down until I finished a chapter. It was interesting about how she traveled back in time and seemed to fit into that era.

I can see me going back to the Graham Saga again and again to pick up where this episode leaves off. It is very well written with engaging characters that really work well. There is tenderness and tension in the relationship between Alex and Matthew, Magnus’s arrival provides a great contrast between our modern social mores and those of the age his daughter has fallen into. We see just how well she has adjusted to this period in history and Magnus, despite his irritation, learns to adapt too.
Love scenes are sensual, they are written with frankness and sensitivity. The couple truly love each other in all ways and nothing is hidden but they are not overly graphic. Alex and Mathew are a true love match but the greatest tension develops when the Minister is introduced to their hitherto happy home to bolster up Matthew’s flagging morals. This revolting specimen is truly misogynistic and, sadly, Matthew fails to intervene. No more… you need to read it. For the most part, the characters support each other through some very difficult times, there are references to abduction, rape, slavery, and overt racism which were a given in those days. Elizabeth, the prudish and bigoted “goodwife.” is quite the foil to Alex and Mrs Parsons is a delight. There are some truly evil villains, some of whom get their come-uppance and others live to menace the family in future novels.
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-rounded historical novel and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romance with a difference.

4.0 out of 5 stars A flying visit back in time to 17th century America.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 15, 2014
Once again I’ve enjoyed my stay with time-slip Alex and her husband, Mathew Graham. This time I met the pair, almost four years after their departure from Scotland in 1668. Settled into their new home in the American colonies, with a cabin built and six children in the family nest, inclusive Mathew’s eldest boy from a previous marriage, life is tough and sweet in measured doses. Strong sons, too, are godsend, for life on the land is tough when you’re hewing crop and meadowland from the native habitat of woodland and scrub.

Domesticity in the New Americas is not exactly turn-of-switch wash days, and of ironing and vacuuming, something that was, at one time, second nature to 21st century born Alex: before she was thrown back through time to a hillside in 17th century Scotland. Memories of her past life do tug at her heartstrings from time to time. But even if a return ticket to the future was possible, Alex would want to take her present family with her and how would one explain away an instant family transported from the past? Equally, the chances are not all would elect to go forward in time, and Alex could never leave Mathew (love of her life) behind. Nonetheless, portals to and from the future exist, and an unexpected 21st century visitor brings the joy and pain of loss to the fore, not only for Alex but for him too.

The title ‘A Newfoundland’ is exactly what it says. This novel is all about the building of a new life for the Graham family, in which old friends and arch enemies cross paths. While old friends celebrate, and scores are settled with enemies, there is one that is to remain a thorn in Alex side. In the meanwhile, the Graham’s make much of love and procreation. I’m wondering if by the next book they’ll have a baker’s dozen in total inclusive Alex’ son Isaac back in 21st century UK, and Mathew’s eldest 17th century son, Ian.
