An Optimist's Guide to Heartbreak (Heartsong Duet Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 5,393 ratings

From USA Today Bestselling Author Jennifer Hartmann, comes a brand new, heartfelt, two-book romance series.

There once was a girl with fireflies in her eyes and music in her soul.

(Remember her... she's important.)

She's the reason I panic-bought the little brick house on Maple Street; the one I lived next door to for eight magical years. Now that I'm back digging up floorboards and lost journals, I can’t stop thinking about the two people who grew up here.

You see, that girl was my best friend, and this house was once hers. She also had a big brother who was my everything before circumstance turned us into nothing more than memories.

That’s why I applied for a job at his auto shop—unprepared to discover that my new boss, Cal Bishop, is now gruff, built, and covered in tattoos.

I'm the sun to his overcast sky. The smile to his surly solitude.

A reminder of everything he longs to forget.

But my heart has a secret, and we’re running out of time to fix our torn pages.

Maybe... the same girl who used to be the glue still holds the key to putting our pieces back together.

(See? I told you she was important.)

Toodles,
Lucy

Jennifer Hartmann resides in northern Illinois with her own personal romance hero and three children. When she is not writing angsty love stories, she is likely pondering all the ways she can break your heart and piece it back together again. She enjoys sunsets (because mornings are hard), bike riding, traveling, bingeing Buffy the Vampire Slayer reruns, and that time of day when coffee gets replaced by wine. She loves tacos. She also really, really wants to pet your dog.

10 stars!! READ THESE BOOKS!
Review for BOTH books in this series. You MUST start with An Optimists Guide to Heartbreak! 10 ⭐️ 3🌶️ (yes, 10 out of 5, they are that good!) “Home is something I buried a long time ago…But I buried it inside you. Just in case I ever wanted to go back." 😭😭😭😭😭 This was by far my favorite series/duet I have read yet. Perfection. Book 1 ends in a cliff hanger so make sure you have both before you start, & you must read them in order! I knew these would give me alll the feels but I basically went in blind and didn’t know what I was in for. 💛Second-chance, childhood love 💙Friends to lovers 💛Grumpy/sunshine 💙Duel POV 💛Slow burn/spicy 🌶️ 💙Death/loss/grief 💛Addiction 💙Healing 💛Angsty, emotional romance “not everything that makes us hurt needs to be forgotten or banished. It hurts because it mattered. And things that mattered once, will always matter” ❤️ These are painful and angsty and emotional. I pretty much cried the last 60 pages of book 1 and started crying on page 3 of book 2 so yea it was destruction for me the whole time. "Do you really believe I'll uncover your flawed pieces and think for a second they won't be pieces worth keeping?" 🥺😭 I mean, stab the knife and twist it will ya 💔 I loved ALL the characters so much. UGH Cal has my whole heart my god I felt for him the entire 2 books, he just broke me. I mean the dude literally didn’t even think he was worthy of having friends 💔Don’t worry tho, he was also hot and possessive 🫠 "A girl as sweet as you shouldn't look like sin” 🔥 #yesplease I cannot say enough good things. 1000% recommend, just be ready to have your heart torn out and put back together again.

I know it’s only the end of January, but I just found my favorite book of the year (so far). The way I am completely and utterly obsessed with An Optimist’s Guide to Heartbreak! I started this and finished it in one sitting, staying up until 6am to devour it. 😅 Like, I already want to reread.

This is easily my favorite Jennifer Hartmann read now, and I’ve already had other 5-star reads from her in the past. Lucy was everything and more, she instantly became a favorite heroine. I loved her joy and awkward texts and happiness and naïveté and hope. She made me smile and laugh so much and I just am in love with her. Cal is the complete opposite of Lucy, extremely closed-off, broody, grumpy (basically my kind of hero).

Cal and Lucy have a past, they knew one another as children and grew up as next-door neighbors before a tragedy in life tore them apart. It’s been 9 years since they’ve seen/spoken to one another (when Lucy was 13) and Lucy finds herself purchasing the house Cal grew up in when it becomes available for sale, it holds all the best memories for her. She wants to track down her old friend Cal and does at the car repair shop he owns.

Lucy asks to interview for the receptionist position in the auto shop and the story takes off from there. I didn’t know much going into this one at all and it honestly encompasses so much that I don’t even think I could fully describe it all. The angst and tension between these two is out-of-this world amazing! Lucy is the joy to Cal’s broodiness and she’s determined to make him smile and fill his life with joy again. We have a tattooed hero who has a kitten, alllll the angst, a heartbreakingly achy shared past, a hand flex, that close proximity when they work together and when she ends up staying with him a couple days when her house floods, adorable dogs, an absolutely possessive hero, music (she sings and plays the guitar weekly at a bar live), such a satisfying slow burn, all the emotions! Ugh I am wrecked and obsessed and already want to both continue on to book 2 and reread this book over again!

That’s Lucy. The FMC. She is Ray of sunshine to all and any. She is all heart. So full of life, so reflective, joyful, smart and talented. She’s been in love with only one boy her entire young existence and that is Cal. Hot, broody, moody yet totally open once he decides to speak. He doesn’t beat around the Bush. Surprisingly, she does yet there is a reason for that. This book is good. It could’ve been great if not for certain things that my personal opinion didn’t care for. However, the story itself and the characters were good. It’s so worth the read. Lucy will have you wanting her in your life.

Jennifer Hartmann is an amazing author. All of her books have soul and heart, and this one is no less beautiful. Lucy and Cal’s story is a slow burn, the type that leaves you aching for them both because you know they’d be perfect together but they don’t see it. And they each have their reasons. The way that Jennifer writes this book leaves us in the dark, leaves us in suspense. We don’t know the whole backstory. We don’t know everything that is going on now. All we do know is that the story itself is utterly heart wrenching and beautiful. I promise that if you have any emotions at all, you will laugh. You will cry. But mostly you will ache for the happy ending that we don’t get because this is book one in a duet. Be prepared to cry for the cliffhanger. And many other chapters. But this might easily become my new favorite book by Jennifer and I’d love to see it as a movie.

While growing up, Lucy Hope's best friends were Emma Bishop and Emma's older brother Callahan (Cal). Tragic things happened and everyone went their separate ways, but now Lucy is back in town and in the former house of Emma and Cal. She also wants to rekindle a friendship with Cal so she applies for a job at his auto shop. I really loved Lucy, she is the epitome of sunshine and cheer, but also a bit naive, too. And much to her dismay, the version of Cal standing in front of her is not the guy she remembers. He's abrupt, grumpy and has no desire to get to know her again. In other words, he is emotionally closed off and avoids any personal connection. My heart hurt for both of them because I knew there was something going on with Lucy, yet she is determined to always look on the bright side and to find the silver lining. As for Cal, he is burying a lot of pain internally and lives day to day, so as much as he tries to ignore Lucy, her positivity sparks something inside of him. There is a lot of fun and funny dialogue that had me chuckling because Lucy tends to ramble when she is nervous and she gets nervous quite a bit. Her innocence and sweetness is really charming on her and I also enjoyed Cal's blunt and direct manner, too. The fact that they have history between them as well as some unanswered questions kept me reeled in and anxious to turn the pages to find out more. Their chemistry is absolute dynamite and the kind that had me turning the pages in anticipation. The hidden clues and subtext is well planted to move the story along with each small revelation. There are some truth bombs at the end, along with a cliffhanger, so at this point, I'm not sure what to expect next because Jennifer Hartmann always has something up her sleeve, but I can't wait to read more and find out what happens because it's pivotal and consuming.

This was a pretty good book.

It's funny! I loved Lucy. Despite being a naive virginal character, she was endearing. I loved the silly comments and jokes she made, intentional or not. I liked the interactions between her and cal.
I did catch on pretty quick to what her "secret" was.
The ending is a cliffy, but luckily, the 2nd book is out. So, no waiting.
Can't wait to see how this pans out.

→ An extremely powerful story of love, loss, heartbreak mixed with hope and tangled in beauty. Jennifer Hartmann’s new masterpiece did not disappoint. An Optimist’s Guide To Heartbreak will take you on a journey where you will laugh out loud, cry until you can no longer dry your tears and foremost, dream and travel..

→ Writing almost an entire book based only on the heroine’s POV is not an easy task, however it was executed flawlessly. The reader is put on the same level than the heroine regarding the hero’s feelings and thoughts. We witness Cal’s development through the eyes of Lucy and this result in us reacting just like her whenever he says or do something unusual, I really enjoyed this particularity.

→ Jennifer Hartmann has this ability of always surpassing herself in her work. This is the tenth book by her that I'm now reading and even though she didn't need to progress, I can definitely see the improvement in her character and plot writing, and it is fascinating to witness.

→ Cal is maybe the most intense hero she’s ever written. He is swoony and surprised me multiple times, he really had me kicking my feet and giggling like a teenage girl.. I’m impatient to get in his mind and learn more about him and his broken soul hiding pure heart under all of the wounds.

→ Lucy is probably my favorite Jennifer heroine to date. She’s a relatable character, written with such realness that you feel like she can’t possibly be fictional. I related to her in more ways than one. She’s a sunshine and let’s be honest, we’d all dream of having a best friend like her. I want to hug her so tightly.

→ Lucy and Cal went through the same pain but the contrast of their personality is astonishing. People can have a different reaction to a tragedy they lived through. Cal is closed up on himself so he won’t hurt again meanwhile Lucy wants to savour every moment because she wants to forget she was ever hurt.

→ Reading this book was equivalent of being cozy at home during an autumn day, comfortably lying with a blanket while drinking hot chocolate. You feel warm, you feel safe, peaceful and content.

The covers are stunning, and is what drew me to the story in the first place. There are so many subplots that paced perfectly in both stories that you are drawn into the read whether you want to be or not.

The only thing keeping it from a 5 star review was the constant "running away" the characters did and the FMC continually crying even though she is meant to be the optimist.
Emma was a stand out character for me, and it is slowly revealed of her demise only in book 2... so be prepared for the Cliff Hanger in Book 1.
