A Perfect Match (The Merry Romances Book 1) Kindle Edition
Three men compete for her hand—but only one holds her heart
Amidst the glamour of the London season, Alicia Westlake must find a husband before she’s swept into a match of her mother’s making. Two of the season’s most eligible bachelors vie for her hand, but she’s more interested in character than wealth, and dreams of marrying for love.
Welcomed into the bluestocking circle, Alicia is drawn to the witty Mr Merry, who shares her love of history—but not her faith. A younger son, Christopher Merry is the black sheep of his family. Haunted by painful memories, which he struggles to suppress, he refuses to take life seriously.
Mrs Westlake’s plans for Alicia leave no room for such a man. Desperate for her daughter to marry into the nobility, she will go to any lengths to achieve a brilliant match.
Christopher must confront his past, and seek forgiveness, to become the man Alicia needs to save her from being sacrificed to her mother’s ambitions. But time is running out…
Set in London and the seaside town of Weymouth, in 1788–9, this novel by the co-author of the popular Regency History blog is rich in historical detail. A glossary is included.
Written in a traditional style, inspired by Georgette Heyer, A Perfect Match is a clean and wholesome faith-based romance, full of witty banter and understated humour.
This is the first in The Merry Romances series, but can be read as a standalone romance with its own happily ever after.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseII love this book. It's hard to explain what's so wonderful about it. I think it's that it reads like a historical love story instead of like a Regencyland romance. It has politics and other issues of the time that makes you feel like you're in the real 1780s rather than in a magical wonderland that only romance characters ever inhabit.
The story is sweet. The characters have stuck with me in the years since I read the book, and I still think about them. I think the main character's mother and her story is one of the most interesting parts of the book. She is not the sort of character we usually see treated sympathetically, and.yet, one cannot help having great sympathy for her and the Duke , and the outcome of their story is charming!.
I recommend this book to all lovers of both romance and history.

The characters are well developed and the world described well enough for me to see in my imagination. There are a surprising number of twists that I was not expecting which always keeps me interested. I am looking forward to reading book 2 of this series.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a clean, standalone read which is well edited and historically accurate. It also has a lot of descriptive imagery, some interesting and others I could have done without. It is a long story, which is no problem if it holds your attention. Unfortunately, I often wondered, 'when is it going to end!'. For me, this story took a long time, a long time indeed, to get to the interesting part. The constant backwards and forwards of the same situations and misunderstandings, was tedious. Once it did start moving, so to say, there was enough action to hold my attention to the end, which was ok. It kind of wrapped everything up, though the outcome regarding the villain was not satisfying. Regardless of whether it was realistic to the times, that is not the outcome I want in a novel. Overall, this was high on historical accuracy and low on overall feeling or romance.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is well written, and I enjoyed being able to fully immerse myself in the Georgian culture. I loved the hero and heroine, who were both thoughtful and mature, despite their mothers, who were meddlesome in their own ways.
I struggled with whether to give this book 4 or 5 stars, and in the end, I went with 5 because I couldn't fault the writing, which I thought was wonderful. I would have taken a star off for things that were matters of my own preference, and I don't like to ding an author for subjective issues. One thing was that I thought it was a little long. The other thing was the pivotal scene at the end. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I was literally angry with the hero over some dumb decisions he made, which did not seem to be in keeping with his past actions.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this novel. It was interesting to learn more about the period and the way the upper echelons of society interacted with each other. I loved the banter between the main characters, and I loved the few swoony moments that were sprinkled here and there. It was a clean read and had some Christian elements, which I appreciated as well. I'll definitely read more by this author in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI had trouble getting into the story and set t aside for a more enjoyable quick read. However, when I came back to it, it soon became interesting and held a bit of intrigue. It is different from the style of writing that I am accustomed to but in the end the story was enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really liked this story. There were good characters, who were easy to become attached to, despicable characters, who were easy to dislike, and, as should be expected, wishy washy characters, just as there are in life.

4.0 out of 5 stars A perfect regency...or maybe I should say "pre regency" novel! :)
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really loved this novel. Descriptions are accurate, characters and plot well built. I'm fond of Georgette Heyer's books, and there are not many modern regency novels I love. I can recommend "A Perfect Match" of Rachel Knowles. She has a blog too, rich of informations about Regency Era:
[...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA good storyline written in a style that is very much of the period. Some good characters too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable characters balance each other well in fascinating historical setting
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe characters made this novel shine. Each balanced off the other: the hilarious mother would have been over-the-top if not for the relatively level yet enjoyable cast that surrounded her. The mystery around the villain kept me guessing his identity as I thought I knew, then second-guessed myself over and over. As a romance, doubt held the hero and heroine apart while the reader knows how perfect they are for each other, adding some enjoyable tension throughout, followed by pleasant relief once HEA is achieved. The Christian themes didn't sound preachy to non-Christian-romance readers; they fit the novel. The content is appropriate for teens.
Editing was well done, and the language, scenarios, and locations pull the reader into the time period. Rachel Knowles writes a fun history blog and used that knowledge to set the scene better than many other similar novels. She gave us the "feel" of the locations and historical characters. I read mostly steamy Regency romance, and the earlier time setting was fascinating. There's a chance for a Regency sequel with these characters' children!
No matter which time period Rachel Knowles prefers, I hope she considers writing more novels of this style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun but sedate read till breathtaking gallop two thirds of way through to end
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed the characters and their machinations for advancement in society in true Austen/Heyer style. I found the middle section rather slow but then towards the end everything happened - mystery, intrigue, hairbreadth escapes, revelation and rescue - right up till the end of the book!
