Secrets! Magic! Enemies to. . .something more?

Jack Alston, Lord Hawthorn, would love a nice, safe, comfortable life. After the death of his twin sister, he thought he was done with magic for good. But with the threat of a dangerous ritual hanging over every magician in Britain, he’s drawn reluctantly back into that world.

Now Jack is living in a bizarre puzzle-box of a magical London townhouse, helping an unlikely group of friends track down the final piece of the Last Contract before their enemies can do the same. And to make matters worse, they need the help of writer and thief Alan Ross.

Cagey and argumentative, Alan is only in this for the money. The aristocratic Lord Hawthorn, with all his unearned power, is everything that Alan hates. And unfortunately, Alan happens to be everything that Jack wants in one gorgeous, infuriating package.

When a plot to seize unimaginable power comes to a head at Cheetham Hall—Jack’s ancestral family estate, a land so old and bound in oaths that it’s grown a personality as prickly as its owner—Jack, Alan and their allies will become entangled in a night of champagne, secrets, and bloody sacrifice . . . and the foundations of magic in Britain will be torn up by the roots before the end.

Recommended and rated this book: 5 stars
Freya Marske's story "A Power Unbound" is absolutely the best of the three book series. It is a fascinating story and it will be interesting to see what she can create with an other story. I found the story line wonderful to read and I did not want it to end. Marske has made all of the characters in the story line realistic and memorable. This author has an ability to keep all of the many characters relevant to the story line. I would recommend any future reader begin with the first in the series (A Marvellous Light) and the second story (A Restless Truth) before picking up "A Power Unbound." Marske is a powerful story teller and can anxiously await a new story from this author.

This is the concluding book in the Last Binding trilogy. Five-word review: I enjoyed it very much.

More? You expect more than five words? More words then, with spoilers.

There's a main plot concerning magic that runs through all three books, but each volume is at least as concerned with a romantic pairing (male-male in book one, female-female in book two, and a different male-male couple in book two). The main plot works well throughout: the magic is fascinating, the threats dire. The pairing of book one entirely beguiled me, that of book two less so. In book three, I found the pairing of Lord Hawthorn and Alan Ross compelling and very satisfying, though unlikely. Hawthorn is a masterful, forcefully domineering lord, but also trustworthy, concerned for the rights of the poor, magically crippled, and haunted by the death of his twin sister. It's a potent mix, but, yes, unlikely.

I think book three suffered a little from involving all six of the trilogy's main characters in resolving the main plot, while only showing the point-of-view of Hawthorn and Alan. I'd have enjoyed a handful of extra chapters from the point-of-view of the protagonists of the earlier installments, and I think that would have lent their parts in the conclusion more depth.

I note that all three books have lengthy, explicit sex scenes, and that they are all, to my mind, very well written. Usually sex scenes fail to engage me, but Marske has the trick of combining energetic description with emotion and need.

A brief shout-out to the bees and to Hawthorn's mother, Polly.

Four out of five apiaran stars.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

A Power Unbound is the fantastic conclusion to The Last Binding trilogy. This series is one of the best queer historical romance fantasies around, and somehow Freya Marske manages for this much anticipated book 3 the best in the series.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jack Hawthorn and Alan Ross clearly don’t like each other. They haven’t said anything nice to each other since they met on a chaotic voyage from New York to London. Even as they both help their found family solve magical mysteries and protect the world from coming under the control of powerful magicians with cruel intentions, they continually two rub each other the wrong way. And now they need each other’s help. But as circumstances push them together yet again, can their animosity be masking an underlying attraction?

There is so much more to the plot, but it’s better to go into it blind. This trilogy is one where you need to read all three books in order. The story builds through each book, and Jack and Alan’s love/hate relationship goes back to the middle of book 2.

Jack and Alan are what I look for in an enemies to lovers relationship; they actually despise everything about each other. I love the way they insult each other, yet ultimately understand each other’s thought process. And underneath all that bickering, it’s fun to watch their sizzling chemistry slowly become evident.

It’s not often in a trilogy for book 3 to be my favorite, but this one is perfect. Freya Marske manages to tie up an infinite number of loose ends in a satisfying way while remaining true to all her characters. I love The Last Binding trilogy, and A Power Unbound is my favorite book in the series. If you are a fan of queer historical fantasy, this trilogy is a must read.

    4.75 stars.

The prose is good to stunning. I was never bored.

I was never disappointed with the evolution of Jack and Alen's feisty relationship. What a delight. However, it took me days to sneak my way through the over-arching catastrophe to reach the very satisfying end. Partly this was just my anxiety, partly it was the continuing frustration at how often these characters underestimate the enemy characters. That's where that quarter-star went.

The resolution and follow-up turned out to be the perfect balm to all that.

Also! The last third of this novel got all the editorial attention it needed--I wish that happened more often. It was brilliant to read.

    5/5*

Listen, I don't think I can truly be coherent about this review. It's past midnight, I just finished the book, and I'm a mess. Still, I'll try.

A Marvellous Light had been thrilling in its discovery. I knew Freya for her fanfic, knew that I adored her fluid writing style heavily flourished in beautiful and heartwrenching imagery already, but I wasn't /sure/ this was quite my taste in fantasy. And yet I loved it. Came back for more in A Restless Truth, and though it wasn't exactly /right/, it still fit, and I still loved it.

I knew this one wouldn't disappoint. First, because the few interactions we caught between Hawthorn and Alan Ross in ART had left me WANTING. Second, because the mystery of the Last Contract was finally coming to a close, and I was VERY excited to discover what would happen to our heroes.

And speaking of our heroes, what a delight to get everyone back. I'd missed Edwin and Robin a lot more than I thought I did (that's not true, I knew I'd missed them terribly), and Maud and Violet always bring freshness wherever they are. Seeing the whole family assembled, and adding to it the new pieces of Jack's and Alan's ACTUAL families, as well as a couple more weirdos here and there, felt like the grand finale gathering I wanted and needed.

The plot gripped me from the beginning, and didn't let me go. I just love what Freyja did with her magic system, with the trees and the cradling and the power in a place as well as the power YOU put into it. Just... chef's kiss.

Jack and Alan, as I said, were clearly the highlight of this. I loved their bickering. I loved their emotional moments. And damn, I loved the mindblowing sex scenes, as few as there were. The vulnerability of Alan wanting to HATE everything Jack stands for, but also NEEDING to feel that authority pushed on him, ONLY when he wants it. The difficult balancing act of both their feelings. I was - still am - in awe.

The prose... Do you really need me to gush more about the prose? Freyja hit me with "He'd forgotten the speed with which this hatred rose simmering within him. He'd forgotten that the edges of it crossed boundaries where it stopped feeling like hatred and became something wilder and more dangerous." on PAGE FREAKING 29 and I haven't recovered since.

Anyway. Great conclusion, I am a mess of emotions, and I need Freyja's next book like... yesterday.

I ADORE the mix of plot, character development, and romance. I particularly adore the sex scenes in this installment, as a fan of kink and power play, and discovering deeper feelings through it. But really, every part of this whole series is phenomenal; from the utterly enchanting writing to the compelling, always endearing characters (even when they're being pigheaded arses), their believable and yet dreamy relationships and dynamics, and the plot and magic!! I love it. Highly recommend to anyone who likes magic and romance and fantastically written stories and characters.
