Paris, 1774. A daring bargain. An unexpected love. A choice that could ruin them both.

Sophie Twisden has always played by society’s rules, but when her grandmother falls ill, leaving her vulnerable to the insufferable advances of Sheldon Cholmsley, she must take drastic action. Desperate for escape, she strikes a bold deal with Basile Gervain—a charming yet enigmatic Frenchman—agreeing to a sham betrothal to preserve her reputation and secure her passage back to London.

But pretending to be engaged is far more dangerous than she anticipated. The more time she spends with Basile, the harder it is to remember that their arrangement is nothing more than a convenient ruse. His quiet strength, his kindness, and the way he truly sees her—all of it makes her long for something impossible.

Now, with the moment of their parting drawing near, Sophie must face the painful truth: she has fallen hopelessly in love with the man who never truly meant to keep her. Will she risk everything for a chance at real happiness? Or will she walk away, forever wondering what might have been?

A clean and heartfelt Georgian-era romance perfect for fans of sweet historical love stories with a dash of drama, longing, and swoon-worthy slow-burn romance.

Delightful, wonderful read

Delightful, wonderful read
Jennie has done it again! I am a huge fan of Jennie’s work. Her way with words and how things sound almost like they could have been written two hundred years ago is one of my very favorite things. But goodness, throw is a healthy dose of France, and I am a goner! The charming ways of Basile could have been slightly roguish, but he really just a flirt with a good heart. The way he swooped in and helped Sophie again and again was actually kind of sweet, particularly because he didn’t force her. And I loved Sophie’s ability to see him for the good person he was, despite his games and charms. She was so good to her grandmother and deserved much more than the uncouth gentleman who tried to convince her he was her saving grace. Basile was so good to her. I loved that he showed her she was someone worthy of love and affection and genuine regard, and that being female didn’t make her less-than in any way. This book was just so sweet. I feel like I learned a few things about French court in the late 1700’s, while being vastly entertained. Also, the romance in this one is soooo good. There are a lot of good moments building romantic tension, and I loved it so much! And the way Basile fell so hard was swoony in the extreme. I loved this book. It was wonderful and fun and a quick read. Absolutely perfect. **many thanks to the author for the ebook; a positive review was not required; all thoughts are my own.

There is the heroine, here tiresome suitor who becomes more obnoxious as the story goes on, then there is our hero. Oh, he is a charming creature. He has an obnoxious follower that he cannot shed so he suddenly announces to one and all that he and the heroine are engaged. And forth goes the story ~ any fool can see they love one another but they cannot see it themselves…until the end, of course. However, do not miss this sweet novella - unless you know all about France…no, do not miss this sweet novella.

When an English belle finds herself in a compromising, unconscionable situation, she finds herself swept off her feet by a French rouge who threatens her heart and her peace of mind.

In order to finish the book in one day, I pulled an all-nighter. Every page turn presented me with reasons to read further ! I hated this to end! A delightful story of true love ending up triumphant!

The author created a world with wonderful characters that caught my attention from the start. It was fun to see the villains get their justice for their actions. I enjoyed the hero and heroine very much and how they handled their betrothal.

A great story that was contained in a fun series. Each book is a standalone but I have enjoyed them all!

This sweet romance made for a fun read. I loved the setting, and the characters were easy to root for. Sophie was kind and intelligent, and Basile was charming and good-hearted but sometimes a bit impetuous. Both main characters were pursued relentlessly by would-be suitors they wished to avoid, hence the need for the fake betrothal. They were so well suited for each other, though it took them a while to discover that. This was a sweet read. The author did a good job bringing the time and setting to life, and I enjoyed the historical details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great story from Jennie Goutet
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 15, 2024
A clean story. Another gem from Jennie, part of a multi author series set in the Georgian period in France. They can be read separately.
This is a good well written romance story. Sophie is in Paris with her aging grandmother who had enjoyed the city when younger. Her character is wonderful, accepting she has no great status in society, nor any dowry or wealth, and does not see herself as a beauty. They are escorted by Sheldon a friend of the family who is very controlling, pompous, and as he has funded the trip expects to marry Sophie, which she is resisting. He does not speak French and Jennie has captured the typical English way of dealing with this. I am English myself. To Sophie’s rescue comes a Marquis, Basile, who is intrigued by her. As he is being pursued by a lady he once had feelings for, Sophie and he enter into a sham betrothal, hence the title. The unfolding story as their situation gets more complex is very good. A thoroughly enjoyable gentle romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely romance.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 15, 2024
This was a lovely romance. I liked the main characters of Sophie Twisden and Basile Gervain, Marquis of Verdelle. Sophie was quite determined in her own way, especially when she was dealing with an unwanted and persistent suitor. Basile is enjoying his batchelor lifestyle, although he would rather be in his country estate rather Paris. They are attracted to each other but are they ready for anything more? I enjoyed the descriptions of the different places and of the clothes. I also liked the different ways the British and French conducted themselves and their different attitudes. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I did preorder my own copy.
