A Sweet Man (The Men of Halfway House Book 7) Kindle Edition
Gabriel “Bull” del Toro loves his fast-paced globe-trotting job, but aches for an honest relationship and the trust that comes with it. After a few too many heartbreaks, he’s nearly given up hope of finding that special someone.
Until Ben.
Born deaf, Ben is used to working twice as hard for what he wants, but risking a newfound friendship on an impossible dream is scary. After all, there’s one lesson he’s learned: everything is temporary—freedom, friends, even family.
Neither man expects the undeniable spark between them or for every moment together to fuel that connection. For the first time, a happily ever after is within reach, but they must trust that the dream of acceptance, family, and a place to call home is more than a sweet fantasy.
It can be forever.

About the author

Jaime Reese is the alter ego of an artist who loves the creative process of writing, just not about herself. Fiction is far more interesting. She has a weakness for broken, misunderstood heroes and feels everyone deserves a chance at love and life. An avid fan of a happy ending, she believes those endings acquired with a little difficulty are more cherished.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020This title's the newest and 7th title (finally - YAY!) out in Jaime Reese's awesome Halfway House series which is an MM contemporary romance series. No cliffhangers, no cheating, but there is a HEA, big age difference, hurt-comfort, some suspense and a very sweet lovestory. Trigger warnings, I'd say for some perhaps a description of physical abuse.
Each title in the series has had a new main couple and so does this. The stories can be read as standalones though a reader gets most out of them by reading them in order as the characters from the first title have roles in the whole series and also other previous main characters can have side character roles further on. It's much more comfortable to read when the backstory is known. Not a must though.
I really, really love - adore - this whole series let alone this sweet story with the sweet Ben - and how the author has portrayed and written it / them all as well as the choices in difficult and often painful themes and issues the author has chosen to delve into with all the dedication and care put into them. They're not the lightest but are well addressed. One sees how much heart has been put into the making of this book.
It was really wonderful to have a new treat in the form of another story in the series. I bow in thanks to having such a story exactly to my taste to read.
Ben and Gabriel together are - well, they make me gooey inside 😍
I like the length, I like long books and I like this particular authors long books 😍
I also like sweetness like here, I'm very fond of 😍
The end part, the suspense and action part, really took me by surprise! If one mistakes the book for too sweet, one didn't read it through or didn't pay attention when choosing a book. Though I don't personally consider it too sweet, but just what already the title and the cover provided by the skillful author promised. Adorable. Heart-melting. All oooh and AWWWs. And to last, I liked that the story still wasn't dropped at that but we still got to read more about the Happy Ending part 😍
The only "complaint" I have is the sorrow that the author isn't a full-time author and therefore patience is somewhat required of us who enjoy the stories but on the other hand waiting makes the finally gotten read all the more sweeter to enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2020I suppose this review could serve equally as s review of the entire series. I have read....and savored each new entry of the series, and thoroughly enjoyed each, eagerly awaiting the next in the series. The initial premise of the series is unique (not a word I use often) and each novel builds on that theme. This latest has, of course several recurring characters as one might expect. However, it is Ben and Bull's story, and it is especially charming and deeply moving. I particularly liked that it did not contain the by-now almost required break-up about 75% of the way through like so many others of this genre, which is not to say there aren't some bumps along the way. I don't want to give any spoilers, but there IS a major issue toward the end which keeps things exciting, but it is not about their relationship. Both Ben and Bull are well drawn and sympathetic characters whose differences only make the story that much richer and more believable and satisfying. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020This a full-blown novel, a nice change of pace from the shorter books that are being published by indie authors more frequently now. There was no insta-love, thankfully, and it moved at a reasonable and realistic pace that those short books can’t. Ben was also written realistically and respectfully. I did feel there were occasions when the message didn’t meet the action in the story, and it sometimes got a bit repetitious, but overall it was well-written. There are a lot of familiar faces in this one. I always enjoy that.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2020I don't even know where to begin. I have been in love with this series since book one. Seven books later, and nothing has changed. The characters and couples just get sweeter and more romantic.
Jaime Reese has done it again. I was invested in this book from the very first page and that rarely happens to me. I went through the gamut of emotions while reading this book. I was angry, afraid, happy, sad and even heartbroken. I also fell in love and had my heart melt a few times. While reading the previous books in the series ensures getting the full effect of each character and couple, it is not necessary to read the, in order to enjoy this book. Believe me when I tell you, you're going to want to read each book. Several times. This series is just that amazing.
I was a little sad Cole and Ty didn't make an appearance, but it certainly wasn't a deal-breaker.
This book will make you smile and you will definitely shed some tears, so make sure you have Kleenex on hand.
It is always nice catching up with characters from previous books, especially Dray and Shaw. Besides Bull and Ben, Drayton and Vannguard are my absolute favorite couple.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020I F’LOVE this series!! I’ll admit, when I first read the blurb, It didn’t connect that The MC, Ben, was the side character from A Worthy Man (book 5). Once I started read ASM and realized it was him, I was REALLY happy. I loved him and his Frankenbunny and wondered what happened to him.
As always, this book was very well written. The love between Ben & Bull is just so sweet! This book is NOT all sweet and sappy. There are plenty of emotions (happy and sad), a bit of drama, and so much beautiful love.
A few cameos from former HH residents and their partners, and plenty of new side characters to love.

3.0 out of 5 stars Zu sweet

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story!
I thought we had seen the last of The Men of Halfway House, but I’m delighted to have found and read book 7 of this wonderful series. Bull and Ben, both emotionally damaged, both dealing with complicated family relationships, find each other and develop a deep love. Of course, there are multiple bumps along that path to happily-ever-after, some even life threatening, but it’s a process that cements the love we witness between Bull and Ben.
I haven’t read whether another book will be forthcoming in this series, but I certainly hope so. Through ever story, Matt and Julian are in charge of Halfway House, and their relationship is as strong now as it was in book one. I love that couple.
Anyway, you don’t need to read the books in this series in order, but I’d recommend it. Knowing the history of the recurring characters makes the story that much more meaningful.
Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, thoughtful story to treasure
What a great book! Obviously containing characters from an earlier series, which means I have to go back and read those, but still with a wonderful stand alone story.
I loved it because of the main characters who were so strongly and authentically drawn, and also the lesser characters, who also felt real, as did all the emotions.
The story line was unique, with a one of the main characters, Ben, being profoundly deaf, and I loved the chance to get an understanding of the challenges he faced, with lip reading and ASL.
All in all a thoroughly satisfying book on every level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
Okay so not only is this my first read from this author but it is also my first read where one of the main characters has a disability. In this case Ben is deaf, used by those he thought of as friends ending up in trouble and landing himself in prison and then Halfway House where he finds his chosen family. We see this couple Ben and Gabriel ‘bull’ del toro grow and learn from each other we see them both struggle with the decisions made by others and the aftermath of certain times in their past. This story is beautifully written and had me hooked from page one. It’s heartbreaking and heart mending all in the same sentence and the support they give one another and the family around them is amazing to read. I will definitely be going back and reading more of this series

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great addition to this series!
I’ve been a bit fan of this series ever since Jaime wrote A better Man with Matt and Julian. I can still picture Julian when he first meets Matt arriving to look at working in the renovation of the building now known as the Halfway House! Over the years we have met some incredible men looking for a second chance each with their own unique stories.
In this book we meet Ben who is blind and had previously stayed at the HH before falling into bad company and going back to prison to finish his sentence. Now he is just out ready for a fresh start but being blind makes him vulnerable and an easy target.
Bull is tough and scary on the outside but so,loving and protective of his family and friends.
There are quite a few twists and turns and it had me guessing at all times. I loved Watching Ben come into his own whilst wanting to wrap Ben him up and protect him also.
It was great to see the old characters and have bbq at HH like old times.
I look forward to seeing what Jaime has in store for these men in her next book.
