A Touch of Death (Reaper Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

The death of Jael James’ mother meant it was time to face her destiny as the Grim Reaper. Her first spirit shows up after being murdered, demanding the killer be caught before she can cross over. If a serial killer on the loose wasn’t bad enough, it turned out to be a demon sent by Lucifer to test her.

Death is there to guide her as she makes the journey into the unknown, but he seems to have his own agenda—which involves getting her naked. He wants to show her what they could have together. But then there’s Nathan, who wants to be more than just her paramedic partner. Competing with Death for her attention might be more than Nathan can handle.

Will Jael find a balance that will keep her secret safe, or will her new role as Grim Reaper force her to walk away from the two most important men in her life?

About the Author

Born and raised in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, Marissa Dobson now resides about an hour from Washington, D.C. She's a lady who likes to keep busy, and is always busy doing something. With two different college degrees, she believes you are never done learning. Being the first daughter to an avid reader, this gave her the advantage of learning to read at a young age. Since learning to read she has always had her nose in a book. It wasn't until she was a teenager that she started writing down the stories she came up with. Marissa is blessed with a wonderful supportive husband, Thomas. He's her other half and allows her to stay home and pursue her writing. He puts up with all her quirks and listens to her brainstorm in the middle of the night. Her writing buddies Max (a cocker spaniel) and Dawne (a beagle mix) are always around to listen to her bounce ideas off them. They might not be able to answer, but they're helpful in their own ways. She love to hear from readers so send her an email at marissa@marissadobson.com or visit her online at http: //www.marissadobson.com.

I loved this book. I can't wait to for Jael to discover more about her powers. I would love to see Cleg and Nathan find their soulmates.

Although I've seen the plot line in other stories, Marissa Dobson makes it unique through her character development. Jael is a girl I can relate to, and that helps a lot. She is also a classic anti-hero, insisting she won't get involved with what Death is proposing. Marissa does a great job of showing Jael's reluctance at getting involved with her fate, but she ends up finding something close to happiness in the end. As usual, Marissa's writing is fun, and the story is fast-paced. Having read earlier stories of hers, I can definitely see the improvement in her writing, the depth of her characters, and her story development. I look forward to reading future books and novellas.

i really wanted to like this book. But the heroine was supposed to be tough but ended up a wimpy follower. The book was all over the place You could tell it had been longer. but parts were chopped together. Characters would talk about a scene that was gone. i tried hard to enjoy it but bottom line is that even at .99 it was a waste of money. and time.... If you like the idea there are better book choices. One I liked with the same idea is First grave on the right by Jones, Darynda . Same idea but much better written.

Sets up the Reaper series. Introduces the characters and begins building the world of Jael and her brother Cleg. There is a killer where she works as an EMT and Cleg is the detective in charge of the investigation. With the passing of their mother, Jael learns that she is now the Grim Reaper as well as all the things her mother never told her but told her brother. Now she must deal with becoming the Grim Reaper.

I liked these characters. I could understand Jael's trepidation with becoming the Grim Reaper. I liked how she handles it and how she helps others cross over. The world building is good. I look forward to more in this series. It is different and refreshing.
