A Vow of Blood and Tears Kindle Edition

Bane

Never did I dream that a woman would cry on our wedding night.

Ten years have passed since humans and vampires allied to defeat the wolves.

Now, to seal the covenant between our people and keep my throne, I must take a mortal bride.

But I’ve gone further than any vampire has gone before—become a fiend, a monster even among my own kind. No woman can lay eyes on me now without horror and fear.

When I first see her, I know I’ve doomed her. But she doesn’t scream in terror.

She fears not my face, but my bestial thirst.

Because of her courage, I will be the remorseless beast who keeps a beauty chained with vows.

And though I crave the taste of her blood…

I will fight the monster within to win her heart and soul.

Cirri

Never did I dream that a monstrous vampire would be the one to hear me.

Voiceless and ignored by the world, I was never considered good enough for anything beyond my indentured servitude—a silent, forgettable shadow.

Until my blood betrayed me.

Chosen by chance as a pureblood bride for the Lord of the Rift, I’ve been sold in marriage to a vampire more hideous than I could’ve imagined.

But despite his savage appearance, he tries to hear my silent words.

He alone learns to read the language of my hands.

He might be a beast, but there is beauty in his soul. For the sake of my people, I will spend a lifetime shackled to this monster…

But for the sake of his heart, I will make myself heard.

I usually never leave reviews, but this book was so incredible I had no choice. 'Romantasy' gets a lot of flack as a genre (a thing that women like? must be stupid lol 😑) and this book serves as a shining example of why these kinds of stories are so widely loved.
For starters, Cate Corvin is a masterful author. I was immersed from the first page - her talent and skill painted a perfectly clear picture of the world in which this story was set. Top-notch characterizations, considered and researched world-building, and effortless dialogue made this book a pleasure to read.
Cirrian was such a lovable, inspiring protagonist. She, along with every other character, felt fully realized and multi-dimensional. Bane tugged at my heartstrings with his guilt and sacrifice. I absolutely LOVED them together!
The smut was very classy (if you can use that descriptor for monster sex 😬) and never felt gratuitous. Not that I have a problem with that, mind you, but it matched the tone and rhythm of the story as a whole which is hugely impressive. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, vampires, determined and relatable heroines.......and sexy times between monster-adjacent men and consenting ladies, of course. 😈
(P.S. Dear Ms. Corvin, if you happen to be reading this, I hope there are books in the works for the other three fiends! Wroth deserves happiness too 😥)

What a beautiful story. It was intense and pretty violent at times but the relationship between Bane and Cirri was really special. The world building was amazing with vivid descriptions that made me feel like I was there along with the characters. My favorite part of the book was the relationship between Cirri and Bane. I loved the secondary characters as well. This book was a reminder that outward appearances aren't what is important. It's what is inside their heart and how they treat you that matters the most. I was sad when it ended and that to me makes a great author.

If you love an unconventional hero and relationship, this book is a gift. While the writing isn’t as poetic as Grace Draven’s Radiance, it gave me similar feels.

Cirri (25) is a strong, intelligent fmc, she is also mute. She reads and writes in multiple languages and communicates through sign language. Abandoned by her family at an early age because of her “defect” she has been an indentured servant all of her life.

Bane (80 ish) is a vampire Lord, but he elected to be permanently transformed into a fiend to protect his people. Basically, he’s a giant, terrifying, monster-like creature. *See below

“People of the Rift, welcome your Lady, Cirrien lai Darran, wife of Lord Bane Lifegiver.”

I loved the slow, steady growth of their blossoming relationship.

When she signs, “I see you, and you hear me.” I melted. She is able to see past his monstrous features, and he is able to understand her complicated language.

For nearly 700 pages, the story flows beautifully, I was never bored. The length allows the plot to unfold naturally.

    The not so great.

-The bad guy was easy to spot.
-Why is this cover so bad?
-Why do so many books in this genre have the same type of titles?!

The drama around the 70% mark made sense, and I was relieved it wasn’t just another giant miscommunication trope. But the last 20% felt like a different story. Gruesome battle and tort¥re scenes, go in prepared.

And yet, after all that darkness, we get a strangely fluffy conclusion. A bit of a letdown, but overall, I still really enjoyed the journey.

*The hero isn’t human at all. He has split tongue, mouthful of sharp teeth, horns, long pointed ears, and a bat-like snout. His male appendage has barbs.

WOW. I am SO impressed and that doesn’t happen too often.
I’ve just discovered Cate’s works through this book and I’m already about to start another book by her.
She very clearly put in the work. The characters are very well thought out and carefully written, she takes time to describe the setting and set the ambience (without wasting your time taking whole paragraphs to do it), and the plot was very well done.
I very much appreciate monster romances for entertainment and usually take it at face value, but Cate gave such depth to her characters that you really have to choice but to look deeper.
This book gets to the good stuff pretty quickly (not THAT good stuff, I mean the plot) but not so quickly that it feels like an unrealistic timeline.
Never once was I frustrated with the FMC in this story. If anything, I found myself saying, “She’s better than me. I never could have done it like that.”
There is also disability representation as the FMC is mute and uses sign language. She was tenacious in making sure people knew that just because she is mute doesn’t mean she is dumb (this is not my word, but rather one from the story).
The MMC has a monstrous appearance but a very kind heart. I found myself crying for him multiple times.
There are some high stakes plot points, so this isn’t necessarily a cozy read. But the arranged marriage friends to lovers aspect of the plot felt very cozy.
I also am very pleased with the length of this story. I struggle with stand-alone stories that are less than 550-600 pages because I personally feel like anything less isn’t enough time to lay out well developed characters AND plot. This book has it all.

If you've been craving an adult retelling of beauty and the beast, where Beauty is mute, and Beast is a fiend (primordial vampire being), with a marriage of convenience, an occultist "wolves" cannibalistic enemy, and a supporting cast including a bloodwitch/vampire commander le$bean couple. where beast is soft as f for her and not afraid to k!ll someone for disrespecting his wife, but also can hardly believe how lucky he is to have her and learns sign language in secret so he can converse her on her terms? then.... this is the book for you.

It's definitely a beauty and the beast kind of tale, but with enough of a spin to make it an interesting read and not predictable. I loved the characters. Cirri's internal dialogs were so interesting. They really warmed me to her, and the way her muteness is presented makes you understand her frustrations and the reactions other characters have to her. Bane was as promised, a mildly obsessed Gothic sweety of a love interest, and together, they made a really great, functional couple.

"You hear me, and I see you." - And just like that they became one of my favorite couples. This one is a page turner!
This is a very different version of "The Beauty and the Beast", and a very good one!
The FMC is a super intelligent woman who only wants to study and to be heard, acknowledged... But she is mute and no one cares to try to understand her.
A Blood Accord has been made after the vampire/fiends save the Land, they are the new rulers, but they can only rule if they marry a pure blood human. The MMC is not only a vampire, but one who became a beast in order to save his people and the entire Land, a monster who no one wants to look at.
After a turn in fate, Cirri sees her entire life and dreams change, as she is one of the only pure blood females who can marry a beast, she is forced into marriage, but the truth is, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and what should have been a horrible fate becomes only the beginning of an extraordinary story.
Dark fantasy, slow burn, forced proximity, found family, you find everything here, in a book that has been beautifully written.

This is the best Beauty and the Beast retelling I've ever read. The writing really sync in with my brain and I just gobbled up the words. This is how you write a strong FMC! She's intelligent, a survivor and matured! She doesn't need to cuss every sentence to point out that no one can mess with her.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 well done!
