A Wild Rough Lot: Whaling and Sealing from the Moray Firth Kindle Edition
A compelling introduction to the whaling and sealing industry in Northeast Scotland’s Moray Firth, Malcolm Archibald’s A Wild Rough Lot will guide you through the trade’s history, dangers and successes.
Beginning with a brief look at the geography and maritime history of Northeast Scotland’s ports, the book introduces the Scottish whaling industry through contemporary journals and log books. Laden with illuminating examples, the book covers topics from the stages of a typical whaling voyage to the brutal, often bloody process of the sealing industry.
In-depth details of the trade in Moray Firth concentrate on the successes of specific ports and ships in the area, including the short-lived whaling industry in Nairn, the prosperous trade and insurance case of Banff, the fortunes and dangers of the Arctic and prominent ship Felix, and a yearly account of the whaling and sealing trade in the most successful port, Fraserburgh.
Beyond a glimpse into the industry, the book provides useful details of the vessels and an 1859 crew list useful for those seeking a chance to trace their family roots in the maritime industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another time, Another place
Malcolm Archibald has the innate skill to be able to transport his readers back in time and really make them feel they are witnessing the events he describes as if you are there. He does this superbly in this history of the whaling and sealing industry of the Moray Firth at a time when thoughts of conservation hadn't as yet entered the human psyche. There can be no denying the bravery of the men from those small Scottish ports along the east coast who braved dangers untold in what was very much a life of hardship riven with danger during every minute of every voyage. With no creature comforts, those men battled severe weather, freezing seas and the ever present dangers of the arctic ice in their continual quest to earn enough to keep their families. At a time when earnings were low, a poor trip could leave their families at starvation levels through the harshest of winters. Out of contact with home and family for months at a time, their wives and families lived with the constant dread that their men would not return. These were indeed a rough, hard lot, but they needed to be in order to survive and then be ready to do it all over again with the coming of the next spring tides. I found this book to be compelling reading and a fitting tribute to those brave men who, to quote an old phrase, 'went down to the sea in ships.' A definite 5 star read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moray Firth Whalers and Sealers
If you are at all interested in maritime history, and particularly the whaling and sealing years, then this will be of great interest. Dundee and Peterhead are reasonably well known as successful whaling ports in the latter half of the nineteenth century but what is less well known is that Fraserburgh, Banff and other Moray Firth ports had an important role to play. As well as the overall history, this book has some excellent anecdotes and personal stories.
