When Betty Palmer's sister dies under suspicious circumstances whilst landing her Tiger Moth, Betty and three other women pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary in WWII England unite to discover who killed her and why.
Estranged from her family, Penny Blake wants simply to belong. American Doris Winter, running from a personal tragedy, yearns for a new start. Naturally shy Mary Whitworth-Baines struggles to fit in. Together though, they are a force to be reckoned with as they face the mystery that confronts them.

Against the backdrop of war, when ties of friendship are exceptionally strong, they strive to unravel the puzzle's complex threads, risking their lives as they seek justice for Betty's sister.

I felt as though I was part of the story myself and that’s down to the author’s very vivid and realistic storytelling. Ginger Book Geek blog – Top 1000 Reviewer

M.W. Arnold's A Wing and a Prayer intrigued me from the start as it shines a mirror on one of my favorite historical eras, WWII. And furthermore Arnold, a former RAF airman himself, introduces us to the ATA, the female volunteer pilots who delivered the planes to bases throughout England. I was particularly moved by a passage in which the ladies out for a walk watch as overhead British bombers fly in formations under a bomber's moon to bomb Germany. My dad, an RAF navigator was one of those airmen who flew Lancaster bombers.
But tucked into this history lesson is mystery and murder. Penny, Mary, both Brits and Doris, an American meet when they are assigned to fly out of RAF Hamble base. These ladies reminded me of Nancy Drew and her pals Bess and George, my childhood fictional friends who were always up to their necks solving mysteries. Frequently compared to the British sleuth Miss Marple, Arnold's trio set out to solve the murder of their landlady, Betty's sister. A steady diet of fish and chips and tea and chatter fortifies the ladies as they meet a group of nefarious strangers. The passages of the ladies flying are written with a knowledge and skill that puts you right in the cockpit. By the end of the book, all the ladies have found the time for romance, too. This is the first book in a series so I know that the ladies and I will meet again.

While I enjoyed reading this book I felt it did drag in places.
WWII is my favorite era for reading and I always glean more information about that era with each book. So in this sense this was a good book.

In Britain during World War II women pilots played a critical role in the Air Transport Auxiliary, a very dangerous endeavor, flying Spitfires and many other types of planes from factories to RAF squadrons. Author M.W. Arnold treats readers to a fictional glimpse into the lives of four ATA pilots thrown together to do their part in this war effort. Their skills are put to the test not only in the skies but on the ground as these women stumble into a deadly mystery right at their air field in England. It will require them to work together and pool their skills to uncover how another pilot was murdered, and by who. Their friendships grow, as does their determination to right this wrong. They move forward on A Wing And A Prayer despite their own peril, to find the killer and bring that cut-throat to justice.

Each of these main characters has her own compelling reasons for joining the ATA force. Some are running away from a past, but all are committed to this cause which is greater than herself. Fascinating that one of them is an American, Doris. She's not only adjusting to the challenges of her assignments, she is learning about life in Britain. Three cheers for fish and chips! Due to a funny series of events, three of the women end up meeting fellow pilot Betty and boarding at her place. That's where they discover the events that took place a few months earlier and led to the death of Betty's sister. Suspicions grow as more is learned about that final plane landing, and as surprises about her sister's life surface.

Sparks fly over other people that the women meet, including romantic interests that are as unique as each of their personalities. The passion of this setting filled with imminent danger intensifies all emotions of friendship, love, and dedication. These tenacious women work hard for their cause, and for each other. Their delightful personalities and little quirks are so much fun to read about. The humor in this novel is laugh out loud.

A Wing And A Prayer is the first book in the Broken Wing series by author M. W. Arnold, who tells such a wonderful story that includes sweet humor and fun, but also great intensity and suspense. The characters jump off the page to include you in their adventures. The author's research is impressive, and so very skillfully woven into the fiction. Interest in the real life pilots may spur you to learn more as you wait for the sequel. You'll marvel at the many insights this British author provides in this exciting and fun work of historical mystery fiction.

Having been a pilot in the Royal Air Force himself for 16 years, the author knows about aviation and planes. This fun romp through World War II ATA female pilots makes war seem like more fun than it probably was. But the characters were genuine, and I especially liked Bobby the dog. He often saved the day. This Miss Marple style murder mystery is sure to please and I look forward to the next two novels.

WWII fiction meets Agatha Christie in A Wing and a Prayer by M W Arnold. An electric group of ladies with varied pasts meet while serving with the ATA in England during WWII. When they find out Betty's sister died under mysterious circumstances, the girls work to find her killer. With the help of the local newspaper woman, her cub reporter and dog, the girls uncover not only a murder but a black market enterprise.

I was allowed to read this on #netgalley. It has recently been released.

I was expecting some kind of historical story of women’s role during World War II and it was but with little historical emphasis. The book is truly along the lines of an Agatha Christie novel, a bit comical and cute with some romance intertwined with the mystery.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A light-hearted WWII read

What a lovely, lively bunch the women of the Air Transport Auxillary Mystery Club are in this novel by M W Arnold! Set in 1942, it’s said to be the first in a series so there’s lots more fun and mysteries to solve. In this one, the group of friends are anxious to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding Betty’s twin sister’s death. Originally dismissed as an accident, Betty is convinced that her sister was killed and the gang, all fancying themselves as Miss Marples, decide to have a go at finding the real motive behind her death. I liked Arnold’s light but witty style and it made for easy reading for someone who isn’t a big fan of mystery novels. His research was exceptional and I got a real feel for what the ATA was all about. I was also amazed to learn that it was a voluntary unit not a military one. Brave, brave women!

3.0 out of 5 stars more mystery and research would have improved this story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 5, 2022
A WW2 murder mystery set in Hamble amongst the women of the ATA. The story was gentle, very much in the Miss Marple style with lots of tea, biscuits and fish and chip suppers, not to mention love affairs. I’m not averse to a gentle mystery, but the plot felt a touch on the thin side, and it was disappointing to have no clues to unravel as everything was laid out almost from the outset. I’d hoped for more of the history of the ATA but found very little and hearing Hamble repeatedly called a town rather than the village it is, even now, was distracting. More research and more mystery would have made this a much more enjoyable read.
