The Absentee King: Richard the Lionheart has abandoned the country... (The Medieval Saga Series Book 5) Kindle Edition
Brother turns against brother to claim the crown…
England, 1189
Richard the Lionheart has been crowned King of England.
But his obsession with fighting in the Third Crusade sends him off to foreign lands.
The nation is left in a perilous state, with high public offices sold off, and trusted favourites left to rule during Richard’s absence.
Richard’s dissolute and envious younger brother John feels humiliated, not least when Richard declares his four-year-old nephew Prince Arthur to be his heir, and he causes unrest throughout the nation by enforcing harsh laws designed to keep the population under his iron fist.
Chief Justice, Earl William of Repton, is ordered to investigate the possibility that John is seeking to undermine his brother Richard’s rule.
And when news reaches England that King Richard has been captured, and is being ransomed by Henry VI of Germany, William becomes convinced that John is plotting to seize the English crown.
Will Richard be released? Will he return to claim his throne?
Or will John succeed in his mission to overthrow the absentee king…?

About the author

David was born in post-war Nottingham, and educated at Nottingham High School. After obtaining a Law degree he became a career-long criminal law practitioner and academic, emigrating in 1989 to Australia, where he still lives.
Combining his two great loves of History and the English language he began writing historical novels as an escape from the realities of life in the criminal law, but did not begin to publish them until close to fulltime retirement, when digital publishing offered a viable alternative to literary agencies, print publishers and rejection slips.
Now blessed with all the time in the world, his former hobby has become a fulltime occupation as he enjoys life in rural New South Wales with his wife, sons and grandchildren to keep him firmly grounded in the reality of the contemporary world.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2024I kept looking up Richard the Lionhearted to see how closely the book portrayed real events. I was very pleased! I ordered the next two books in the series
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2022Great telling of King Richard the Lionheart. David Field writes as if you are right there during all the discussions and events. I liked the outlying characters as well as I felt they added more depth to the story. A very solid series!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2024I enjoyed the first book. This one, however, was simply average. It dragged and dragged and dragged. I would have thought that no one could make Robin Hood’s tale so tedious.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2023This is a well-known story, fairly well told. The author is capable of a good narrative style, but the tale bogs down when the author becomes too enamored of writing rather stilted and sometimes tedious dialogue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read!
I love this Medieval Saga series by David Field and the Tudor Saga series as well, by the same author, all of which I’ve now read. The way the author manages to blend history seamlessly with fiction and merge real historical figures with the fictional ones is just brilliant. I see now how the legend of Robin Hood came about and also that romantic notion of Richard I as Richard the Lionheart is also a myth. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to be released. Highly arecommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet again, history made easier to understand
I liked how the family involved in this series carried on, and made it easier to understand what actually happened during this period of time.
