He’s marooned without a penny. She’s in hiding to protect her virtue. As servants in the same Parisian household, can love be found between the schoolroom and the scullery?
Charles Ellsworth is a young Englishman on his triumphant Grand Tour when the dissolution of his family fortunes and his own recklessness leave him stranded and in debt. He enters service as a tutor in the household of M. Tremblay, with nothing but his wits and the kindness shown him by an elderly maid to depend on.
Pretty Jeanne Martineau played ingenue roles with a traveling theatre company before the manager absconded with the receipts. Now she works as a maid for the rakish M. Tremblay to avoid starvation, but escaping his groping hands requires she don the disguise of a hideous old woman.
When Charles glimpses Jeanne without her disguise, he quickly falls for the lovely young woman, but how can she reveal the truth without them losing everything to M. Tremblay’s terrible ire and desire?
♥The Accidental Servants is a clean and wholesome 18th-century romance novella, written in the traditional style.♥

About the author

When a Charles Dickens Final Jeopardy question saved her from total humiliation on the game show, Christina Dudley decided her degrees in English Literature and lifelong reading obsession might actually come in useful, and she sat down to write her first novel.
Now, twenty books later, she is the author of three series of sparkling Regency romances and the contemporary Jane Austen adaptation PRIDE AND PRESTON LIN (Third State Books, March 2024), which was named to the 2024 Best Romance lists for Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, and Library Journal.
Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area on a diet of classics and Regency romance, her tastes have grown to include sci-fi with robots, survival epics, and doorstop-sized histories, but love stories will always be her favorite.
She and her family live in Bellevue, Washington.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2025What a delightful adventure through Paris theater and the world of servants for the elite. I so enjoyed the escapades of a talented heroine, Jeanne and the layers of subterfuge of costumes and hiding.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024A fun and funny story of misadventures of three main characters. Each end up in dire straits for various reasons and from there the story unfolds.
I enjoyed the characters and plot very much. Both the heroes and heroines are not quick to show their true nature until the end but it is well done.
I had to remind myself that some of the “dumb” actions that added to the plot were just that… a way for the author to create her story.
I look forward to more of this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2025I felt like the story was too far fetched and maybe written by someone who had never been in love. Not my personal favorite but the writing itself wasn’t bad, just the story line.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2024I always love Christina Dudley's writing but I was not sure I would like this plot or characters as well as I did. This is an uplifting read as Charles matures in character while finding his vocation and unexpected circumstances transpire to lead to good outcome for Charles and Jeanne. I won't spoil anything but the author kept me guessing how they would get to an HEA from seemingly impossible odds, mistakes and risks. There are lots of false turns, twisted plots and fortunate saves that lead to HEAs not only for our main characters but some others as well. It's a farce with references thrown in to theatre of that time, so of course the way it evolves is ridiculous but also satisfying. All in all a very nice distraction from life for a few hours that, while holding to the formulaic bones of romance, will not bore you and may even surprise you. A dash of suspense and humor finishes it strongly. I look forward to the next installment.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2024Since I read the series of the Ellsworth Assortment and knew how much Charles and Jeanne helped their family, this books was a real treat. Their niece Florence starts off the series. This book explains why Charles was unable to easily return to his family in England. In disguise, Jeanne is an actress who must take a menial job after her troupe becomes bankrupt. Knowing their personalities adds tantalizing bits to the story. There are many plot twists before Charles and Jeanne are able to make their home in England. Very enjoyable read !
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2024Christina Dudley's new book, The Accidental Servants: Georgians in Paris, is the first book in a new series, but in a very important sense it answers enticing questions about another series of hers which is drawing to a close, The Ellsworth Assortment. All through that series I have wondered what the story was about the younger brother of Mr. Ellsworth, Charles, and his French wife Jeanne. This kind, wise, and noticeably less "uptight " couple were always charmingly different.
This book is a lot of fun! I heartily recommend it to those who enjoy sweet and humorous Regency romances.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2024I am so excited that the first book in the Georgians in Paris series is finally here and can I just say how much I adore this cover?! So gorgeous!
Charles Ellsworth is an English gentleman who finds himself suddenly penniless and stranded in Paris and so takes a position as a tutor to pay off his debts. He meets a mysterious, beautiful woman but realizes he has nothing to offer her and no way to pursue her, but finds some solace in a friendship with the elderly maid he works with.
Jeanne Martineau is an actress who desperately needs other employment. She wears a disguise to protect herself from her employer's roving hands and is surprised to be working alongside the handsome man she met once upon a time. But Jeanne cannot reveal her true identity without risking everything, even if it means breaking her heart.
What you'll love:
Georgian Era
Paris setting
Dual POV
Hidden identity
Forced proximity
The meet cute
The grand gesture
Wit and comedy
This book is like a Georgian version of a comedy of errors. So many layers of hidden truths with laughs in between them all. I had to pay close attention to keep track of all the characters and who knew what and who was speaking but the story line was very unique and the language structure and word choice in the book reminded me a bit of Georgette Heyer.
Cannot wait to read the rest of the series!
CW: References to mistresses and a character who sleeps with all the women working in his household though nothing descriptive or on page

4.0 out of 5 stars A Georgian Romp!
So much fun! To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book, being more of a Regency than a Georgian fan but it wasn’t long before I fell in love with Charles and Jeanne/ Marthe. And there was many a laugh along the way as the players acted out their deceptions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful love story
I really enjoyed this beautiful love story. It is a bit between a theater play, a novel and a fairy tale and I really enjoyed it. Especially the depth of character. As a French, I was a bit hindered by all the double French/English expressions at the beginning, but I understand the author wants to set up the scene in France without any doubt!

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll need your wits if you travel back to late 1700's France!
How do you repel a lecherous employer/landlord, but attract the man of your dreams? Another great story by C.D. The moment of the soup will have you genuinely laughing out loud!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super
Christina is an author to die for. I've simply loved all her books. Her stories never have a dull moment. Her characters are so engaging and her plots are ingenious and this one is no exception. It's the best in the series so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable story in Paris
A clean story. This story has me a little confused. I liked it but it seemed a little odd. It made a change for there to be no Lords and Ladies in it. I was surprised that there were any female servants at all in the household given the masters proclivities. Was Jeannes disguise a little over the top. I think she would have been told to wash. I also thought the ending a bit tongue in cheek. On reflection maybe I was taking it too seriously? I enjoyed it hence the rating, and let's see how the rest of this series goes.
