Ada Lovelace - A Biography in Rhyme: The perfect snuggle time read so little readers everywhere can dream big! (A Wonderful World Book Series) Paperback – November 28, 2022

4.9 out of 5 stars 52 ratings

This biography of Ada Lovelace relates the story of an extraordinary genius who grew up in unusual circumstances. The daughter of the famous Lord Byron, Ada Lovelace didn't have the idyllic childhood one would expect for a child born into a baron's family. Her parents separated almost immediately after she was born, and her mother referred to Ada as 'it' (yikes) - what an environment for a little girl! Her headaches during childhood were so severe they nearly made her blind, and she was bedridden was nearly a year when she was eight, because of a severe attack of measles. Through it all, her passion for reading (she loved numbers and technology) and music kept her going. As she famously asked, 'If you can't give me poetry, can't you give me poetical science?'

Whimsically titled 'Mother of Computer' and the 'Enchantress of Numbers', the story of the world's first Computer Programmer is definitely one worth telling to little kids, not only because of her genius, but also because of her perseverence, indomitable spirit, passion, and sheer, gritty, strength.

This author hopes that every little person who opens this book, closes it knowing that they too, are capable of making waves, and creating change, and working wonders, just as she did!

Author, illustrator, and dentist, Ramya Julian finished her first novel at the age of ten and she avers it was very well received, though it was read only by her brother. She has all the hobbies of a maiden Victorian aunt – reading, writing, painting, crocheting, knitting and sewing, and the temperament of one. When she’s not guilt-tripping her two daughters into good behaviour, she can be found devouring books, crafting poems and puns, and chuckling at her own witticisms. She grew up in India and now lives with her husband and their two daughters in London.

She has experienced so much joy through the enchanting artistry of many authors and creators, that she aspires to share at least some of it through her writing.

Once again, the author showcases her talent with a beautifully illustrated book about the life of Ada Lovelace. The simple, yet clever rhyming text will make it easy for young children to follow along. The author also includes a coding activity at the end, as Ada wrote the first computer program. So much fun! Children can also cut out their very own Georgian house like Ada’s. This is a must read book!

I loved reading this book to my kids because I told them that having headaches and feeling bad isn’t an excuse for them to avoid stuff like doing their homework or inventing the computer.

Julian’s creative approach to highlight female’s contributions throughout history makes this story a compelling read for all. Many adults will also benefit from this STEAM story, as it wraps up in a perfect package how science, math and art compliment each other. The glossary is worth memorizing.

I love reading children's stories where I also learn! Great images and bonus pages ... The rhyme (IMHO) was stilted, or not as fluid as I might have expected, but it doesn't change my recommendation: get this book for a short, inspiration story about doing what you can as you can (it just might be amazing)! We need more stories like about real ppl who really applied themselves!

5.0 out of 5 stars a condensed and child-friendly bio about Ada Lovelace!
Reviewed in Canada on December 8, 2022
This short story introduces Ada Lovelace in simple and condensed language that children can understand. I like the glossary at the end that explains some complicated words and the coding activity that matches well with the story! After reading the book to my Grade K - 1 students, I’m glad that they all remember who Ada Lovelace is and what she did! We had a class discussion afterwards. We will play some short videos about Ada and do a simple writing activity around the topic as well. Good starter!
