Adam's Call: A Scottish Victorian Romance (The Victorian Highlanders Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 123 ratings

Adam McDougall is content with his life in the Highlands… until a delicate Englishwoman threatens to destroy it all.

Adam would far prefer to spend his time in solitude, tinkering with his inventions. What he does not need is to be taken from his work in order to lead British hunting parties who are taking advantage of his beloved land.

When Rachel Trenton, obedient daughter of a ruthless businessman, accompanies her father on a hunting trip to the Scottish Highlands, the adventure she is searching for causes Adam nothing but headaches and a desire to see her gone.

Until those desires take a turn, and he finds the woman stirring unexpected and most certainly unwanted emotions within him. Now he must decide whether he puts his trust in her – or in all he has ever known to be true.

This Scottish Victorian romance contains some steamy content.

Note: Adam’s Call was previously published as Treasures of the Wind and The Highlander’s Call by Audrey Adair.

Ellie has always loved reading, writing, and history.
For many years she has written short stories, non-fiction, and can hardly believe that she is now living out her dream writing historical romance.

In every era there is the chance for romance, and Ellie enjoys exploring many different time periods, cultures, and geographic locations. No matter when or where, love can always prevail.
She has a particular soft spot for the bad boys of history, and can't help but write of strong, feisty heroines.

Ellie and her husband love nothing more than spending time at home with their two sons and Husky cross. Ellie can typically be found at the lake in the summer, pushing the stroller all year round, and, of course, with her computer in her lap or a book in hand.

    Scotland 1885
Adam was a dreamer. He was fascinated by the new inventions and strides that were being made in industry. He was always trying to think of ways to help keep their people from emigrating, giving them new ways to do things and to ease the time it took.
His brother had asked him to lead a hunting party, usually the English wanting a "wild adventure in the untamed highlands."
Rachel Trinton was determined to go with her father on their hunting trip in Scotland. He finally relented but tried to push her toward Vincent Thompson, a man who worked with her father... She was not interested.
Then she saw him "He looked like a fierce Scottish Highland warrior of days long past.... she had never seen a man so...so...undeniably attractive. He held himself tall and proud, his jacket tight over his chest above the kilt that swirled around his legs." When he was introduced as their guide Adam, she could see his eyes scan the crowd and then "He had captured her in his gaze, and it seemed he was not letting go."
Ellie St Clair is excellent in bringing scenes like this to life and characters that come off the page. I thoroughly enjoy the journey of Adam and Rachel and could only sigh as I turned the last page!

A lovely heroine- loyal, considerate, ever the optimist- and a strong Highlander hero- solemn exterior with a caring soul, brilliant, caring. They make such a sweet couple- neither looking to fall in love yet they just fit perfectly. A bit of spice too! There’s two intimate scenes, well written, not gratuitous, and it fits well in the storyline. The “villain” is overcome without too much anguish for our couple- not overly drawn out, but just enough drama to force our H/h to examine the inner workings of their hearts and fight for each other. And the “villains” even have a bit of a change of heart in the end.. kinda. But a happy ending is had by all! Just a book that leaves you quite happy after reading it- truly lovely!

This book tells the story of Adam McDougal, third of the McDougal sons, and his finding of his English bride. Adam was always quiet, but creative, forming inventions to make the hard life in the Highlands easier for those he loved. He was requested a hunting guide for the most recent English hunting party to visit the area. It was a rather large group that included a few women as well. On the first tour, only one woman accompanied them. Adam was angry when the English were rude and condescending to one of the crofters and his family. The lone English woman in the group, Rachel, the daughter of the trip organizer, was also upset that her group was so rude. She tags along the next day when the hunt begins. She gets shot in the leg. Who did it? Where is she taken? What does her father discover when he comes to check on her? Why does Adam accompany them back to London? What happens to them there? How is Rachel able to correct the situation? A wonderfully engrossing tale.

I received an ARC from the author, and am voluntarily leaving my review.

This was a good book. Rachel and Adam were meant for each other but they both had problems to work out.

I read this book and I can't wait to read the next book in the series, I will be sad when there are no new books to read. Ellie St. Clair has become one of my favorite writers.

This is an OK historical romance, but I did have a few issues with it. It gets 3 stars from me.

First, Adam was a bit hard to like at first. He automatically assumed that Rachel would cause problems for him if she went on their group hike, simply because she looked delicate -- and he didn't bother to confirm that before treating her very rudely. He did get a little better as the story went on, but he always seemed inclined to assume the worst about her, and I never really liked him all that much.

Second, the whole plot of Rachel escaping from the arranged marriage was a bit silly. I get that she would have tried to escape, but I didn't think it would have been that easy. And her father certainly would not have accepted it so easily.

I also didn't really believe that Adam and Rachel were in love. They didn't spend much time together, much of that time was with many other people around, and Adam was rude to her at first. Then, all of a sudden, they are in love? Once again, I didn't buy it. It was nice when they found their HEA and solved their problems, though.

    My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

I loved this book and did not want to put it down. The deceitful Father and moronic so say Fiancé were a pair of
Low life who thought they were above and beyond any other person. They had no respect for the lovely Scottish
Family who took them on shooting trips and accommodated them. The lovely daughter who wanted to go to Scotland as an adventure was ignored by the Father and his travelling companion, her so called Fiancé . On the first hunting trip the Fiancé shot her. By mistake of course, just showing off. But it changed her life for ever.
What a lovely story. I will read it again sometime as it pleased me no end. X
