The Boat Party: A completely addictive, gripping psychological thriller from M.A. Hunter Kindle Edition
'A unique and fascinating thriller which pulled me straight in and took me on an exciting adventure' Ruby Speechley
Six old friends … and a secret they’d all kill to protect.
When Pete and his friends set sail on a private yacht in the Balearics to celebrate Fergus’ upcoming wedding, they’re all looking forward to sun, sea and copious quantities of alcohol.
But there’s a reason they are still entwined in each other’s lives a decade after leaving university. A terrible event they’ve all been trying their hardest to forget.
They say you can’t outrun the past … And these six friends are about to find that out the hard way.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this book in two days. It would have been sooner but I had other chores to do. I was captivated until the very end and didn't see what was coming in the end. Shocking and unexpected. I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI did enjoy reading this. When everyone has a motive who do you trust. Well written, believable characters, lots of action and twists and turns. I do recommend this if thrillers are your thing!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story is told between present and past of a group of friends with a secret they share.
Who is the guilty party? Bet you won't guess it right!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book grabbed me from the beginning. I like when authors go back and forth between time periods. Really kept me guessing..
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2024Format: KindleSix college friends gather ten years later to celebrate the upcoming nuptials of a member of the group. The party takes place on a hired yacht with nothing but days of sun and booze to look forward to. But as in all good mysteries, things go quickly astray.
After a day and night of partying, the group wakes the following morning to find the anchor cut, and the captain and hostess missing. Adrift in shark-infested waters, they a stranded without a working radio, cell phones, or means to start the boat. When the first body turns up, the question arises--could one of them be a killer?
The book bounces back and forth between the present situation and ten years earlier when all six shared a house during their college years. There are plenty of underlying tensions, and some smoldering resentments dating back to those earlier times when something "bad" happened. It's hinted at throughout the story but the reader doesn't find out exactly what took place and how it impacts the present until the latter part of the book. This keeps the tension strung tightly along with the question of who the killer might be.
I was surprised to find I guessed correctly, but the author threw plenty of red herrings along the path to make me second guess myself more than once. This is a quick-read mystery, and for the most part, I liked the POV character, Pete. I would read this author again.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought it was a great book. Kept trying to figure out “who done it.” Made me keep turning the pages until late at night.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2024Format: KindleThis one had me guessing the whole way through. Plenty of suspects and I suspected them all! Suspenseful with perfect pacing. A very engaging and enjoyable read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this eARC.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2023Format: KindleThis is one of those where you have to stop and go “hey, this person wrote a book. I’m not writing a book…so good for them.” At the same time you can also hope the author has it out of his system and finds something else to do.
A few times I had to stop and check if I had grabbed something from the young adult genre by accident. The whole thing is just so corny, the dialogue is too silly, and it feels written for 12 year olds. I stuck it out to the end because I expected some masterful twist that blew my mind and made it all worthwhile. Instead I was so uninterested by the time I got to the end I was just glad it was over and I could find something else.
There’s not a likable character, there’s not a mystery to draw you in, and there’s not writing to grip you even if the story doesn’t. I’m not sure what there is here other than “this guy wrote a book…good for him.”
That said, if you are on a long flight and someone abandoned their copy of Adrift in the seat back pocket, and your phone is dead, and if you fall asleep you might die, and the person next to you doesn’t speak the same language, and you have read the airline magazine twice so that you already know where to eat if you’re ever in Omaha then go ahead and read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old friends.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA cruise takes a bad course when a reunion of old university friends starts to create an atmosphere of mistrust when someone is murdered. An interesting guessing game to see if you can spot the killer. Suspend your realism and just enjoy the cruise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder At Sea, Locked Room Style
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAdrift is death in paradise! No offence Saint-Marie but this book has sea, sun, friends and murder! It’s meant to be a celebration as one of the group is getting married but some on board has other ideas! The question is in this Mediterranean Sea based locked room thriller WHO IS THE KILLER?!?!
Anyone is a suspect given there is nowhere for them to go! As the bodies drop, the suspect pool gets smaller so surely identifying the killer should be easy. But as we all know, there is always that chance someone you think is dead isn’t really unless you have the body – is that the case on this boat?! You’ll have to read it to find out!!
The split timeline with the jumps back a decade kept the present day pace on a leash but only just. The student day chapters dragged me back from the deadly sun to lay the foundations and red herrings to one helluva climax. I didn’t see what Hunter had planned as a finale! That was just WTF!! Talk about twisted!! Adrift is a fast paced thriller that I seriously enjoyed. Hunter threw so much at me with clues and suggestions for motive and execution, I really didn’t know what to think! Excellent thriller!

4.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs a debt novel, this was very good and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the setup, the sequence in which the events unfold and the suspense that was maintained throughout the story until the very end. There was action, mystery and the final twist played well. In such a setting the question is always why and how, as it's always one amongst the people trapped who is orchestrating the murder spree. And the past chapters attempts to explain the 'why' part. This is the part I was dissatisfied with - only few of the characters were truly highlighted and others were ignored for most part and few aspects were deliberately left out that could hint us as to who the murderer was. It the whole book would be written from multiple POV (at least the 'past' chapters), it would have played better. Even in the present, character interactions were limited so we couldn't get a read of them to even make an intelligent guess on whether they could be the culprit. So I won't say it's the best thriller I have read, but for it's unique concept and good execution, i would go with 4-5.5 stars.
