Age of Deception (The Firebird Chronicles Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 5,078 ratings

War hero and daughter to two Houses, Kira is just beginning to learn how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Agreeing to accompany her father’s people back to their homeworld, Kira Forrest prepares for the fight of her life. She’s agreed to undertake the Trial of the Broken, a rite of passage every member of her father’s House must pass. It offers a path to independence and freedom that is too tempting to deny.

Not everyone welcomes this lost daughter of Roake. There are those who fear what her presence might bring to light. Betrayal stalks the halls of Kira’s birthplace—its roots embedded deep in the events that claimed her parent’s lives and set her on her current path.

Walking the wire’s edge between truth and deception will test the person Kira has become as she separates ally from betrayer. An old enemy has put into motion a plan that could topple the balance of power in the universe. Letting them succeed spells doom—but the price might be more than Kira is willing to pay.

Writing is my first love. Even before I could read or put coherent sentences down on paper, I would beg the older kids to team up with me for the purpose of crafting ghost stories to share with our friends. This first writing partnership came to a tragic end when my coauthor decided to quit a day later and I threw my cookies at her head. This led to my conclusion that I worked better alone. Today, I stick with solo writing, telling the stories that would otherwise keep me up at night.

Most days (and nights) are spent feeding my tea addiction while defending the computer keyboard from my feline companions, Loki and Odin.

Great book. Intriguing. and now the audible version is out and a fantastic listen.
But where is the audible version? Months later now, and I am still looking almost daily for the audible. No worries, I have read the book several times. It is one of those books that you pick it up when you don't want to think of the word "coronavirus" and a good book will help you sleep. And like all well written books, each time you read it you discover more bread crumbs. This author has a delightfully devious mind. Hidden treasures are surfacing that make you anxious for the NEXT BOOK!!! Now, about the audible version. I enjoy all formats of books. But when you have a good reader and a good writer together, it takes a story to a different level, don't you agree? Can't imagine why it is taking so long to get this audible book available.

I cannot say it enough but I absolutely love Kira! She is such a strong female character and when I think I know her, another layer to her character opens and I see new depths to her. She is just an amazing heroine and in Age of Deception she absolutely proves her worth in every single way. She always seems to be one step ahead and, in this story, she will need to use every advantage she has at her disposal. With Kira, I have come to expect that what she shows to the world is only what she wants others to know. She is a master of subterfuge and machinations but her every action is never for her own gain. She has secrets upon secrets but, from what I am learning, her every move is about protecting something that has yet to be revealed.

What keeps me enthralled with this series is definitely Kira but I also love the other characters in this story! They are all so well-developed that I want to know more about them as well. Even Jin – Kira’s AI sidekick has personality plus as well as a few secrets of his own. I love him to pieces. Don’t get me started about Graydon – I think I might have a major crush on that alien. The way he sees Kira and values her – oh my goodness – I think he might just set the world on fire if he thought it would keep her safe. Not that he doesn’t frustrate me, at times, with his high handed male alphaness. Sometimes I think he needs to be knocked down a peg or two but as the story develops and I learn more of him….well, swoon.

Age of Deception was such a fun story to read and not only did it keep me in a heightened state of suspense with all the twists and turns taking place but it tugged very hard on the heartstrings as well. There was a ton of tension between Kira and her human counterparts and the aliens of Roake. There were many moments that had me riled up on behalf of Kira and there were other moments where my heart was hurting for not only Kira but for all the members of the House of Roake. Then there was the humor element. I laughed out loud so many times with all the snarkiness and playful bantering that occurred between the characters. Oh my, I just love this book and this series so much. I can’t even begin to express the excitement that I feel about The Firebird Chronicles except to say that I highly, highly recommend them to you!

I do not know how T A White is able to write multiple engrossing series set in disparate universes at once but boy am I glad she does. Most other authors seem to just do spin off series set in the same universe they have created- to me this demonstrates T A White's exceptional talent in that she can keep more than one series going at the same time and each is top notch. She has become my favorite author surpassing even Ilona Andrews (which takes some doing) and I eagerly await every book in every series she writes. But the Firebird series, which is her entry into space opera, is without doubt my favorite of her series thus far. Like each of her series, it features a strong female lead. In this case it is Kira who is a Tuann rescued by humans from a camp where she along with others was tortured as a child. In Book 1, Kira learned she was Tuann and about the maternal side of her heritage. The Age of Deception (Firebird Book 2) picks up where book 1 left off and in this book, Kira learns more about her paternal heritage and herself as she undergoes training for the Trial of the Broken on the capital planet. More of her backstory is revealed in this book including why she had exiled herself from her former teammates and what she is searching for. This book made it more apparent why Raider has the chip on his shoulder that he does with Kira. I hope the friendship they appeared to be on the way to regaining isn't further damaged by the revelations at the end of Book 2. Kira's difficulty with trusting others makes more sense in this book given revelations about past and present betrayals but it was gratifying that she allowed herself to make more personal connections and begin to trust others again. Definitely enjoyed the deepening relationship with Graydon. I find myself torn on Jin. While AI Jin is a character I really like, after learning more of his past as well in this book, I hope somehow he does end up with a body again. But if he does, will he and Kira still have the same special relationship? Like book 1, while the primary story in book 2 wraps itself up, the final chapter brings new revelations that sets up the storyline for book 3. It will be torture waiting for that book. While I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review, I chose to purchase the book when it was finally released because I enjoyed it so much I wanted to make sure I had the most up to date version and I wanted to show my support for this author by actually purchasing the book (because I want her to write many, many more).

I really liked too many elements of the story to list without spoilers. I like our MC and love the fact she is tough but does not feel the need to smart off to everyone around her or engage every time a gauntlet is thrown down. Except maybe in the case of the love interest. Their relationship is very competitive and it was interesting to see why they are match for each other even if they aren't much alike on the surface as their personalities and motivations are revealed to us. I enjoyed the fact that she had to prove herself without super-powers in this one-so often the power just keeps growing until it overshadows the character when magic is involved. The plot is unfolding nicely with a plans-within-plans scenario that is pleasantly engaging. Descriptions are great, you get a feel of immersion in the world. Some plot elements you saw coming a mile away, but it was still fun getting there. Others were nice twists and surprises. There were some areas that I thought were repetitious or that were needlessly dragging the story out without really providing a lot of benefit, honestly I think more solid storyline could and should have been in this one, but overall I stayed engaged and kept flipping those pages to find out what happened next or what was revealed about the background or the world. It ended on a cliffhanger, or a surprise reveal I suppose, which was pretty frustrating but not entirely unexpected given the ending of the last book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I never get sick of rereading this series!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 3, 2023

I cannot express enough how much I love and devoured this book! I gave the first book 5 stars and I want to give this one even more. It only gets better with every re-read.

I loved how the plot and characters develop further in this book. Seeing Kira on her home planet with her fathers people was everything! One, Roake’s fortress and territory on Ta Sa’Riel sounds so beautiful and it is so obviously the perfect place for Kira. I loved seeing how she comes to love it more and more as she spends more time there. Even if she thinks she cannot settle and make a home here. This is definitely the house where she belongs compared to Luatha and that is present in how she sees and reacts to the place but also in how the land, creatures and people react to her.

Some of my favourite parts were how the Mea’Ave reacts and welcomes her, her connection with the Lu-ong was so precious and that scene is arguably one of my favourites, and how Roake’s people welcome and cherish her even when she chooses the warrior path, even through the smallest actions. There are so many things that just cement this book and series, over and over again, as my comfort read.

Graydon has cemented himself as one of my favourite book boyfriends. He is as fierce and loyal to those he loved as Kira is. The way he pushes Kira forward and gives a bit of her bite back is perfect, again he is just the perfect match for her. Also I love the he-falls-first vibes and how he cares for her in both small and big ways. He’s so protective even while not impeding her space or freedom. How he is willing to sacrifice his position for her!!! The big end scene with the Uhva na- if you didn’t love him already, I don’t see how you can’t after this. He sees every part of her and is not scared or embarrassed or anything else. He wants her full and true self and I love him for that! Also their back and forth banter is always hilarious and the perfect cherry on top.

Kira’s response to the scene with Rheya about Rothchild was admirable even when it was heartbreaking, especially the group photo omg. I loved seeing how it just raises Kira in the oshota’s regards, both Graydon’s and Roake’s. Even though this scene is sad and clues us in a little more about Kira’s past in the military, it is one of my favourites for how she reacts and very eloquently schools the others even when you can feel her pain through the page. I also loved how it connected her with Finn and how we see a little more into him in the scene that follows. For someone with so few words, Finn remains in my heart. The trust is evident to see between them and as Kira says it is nice to have someone watching her back again. It’s so heartwarming to have someone in her corner and confidence and for her to welcome them there too.

I loved seeing Joule grow into himself and become more confident, though he is still so cute with how he so obviously cares for and admired Kira. Devon is very interesting and the clues dotted around have me hooked for more. He’s another character I can’t wait to learn more about in the coming books.

Raider rises up to one of my favourites here. I really liked seeing how he cares for Kira as a sister even when he is clearly angry and at times seems to hate her. The second half of the book really see him grow into someone we want to know more about and see remain at Kira’s side. The ending!!! It was perfect even if it was a cliffhanger and it’s so exciting to see how it plays out.

Again, like with RoR, one of my favourite ongoing themes is how the oshota are fascinated by Kira. How they silently support her, how protective they are and how they would leave their elite posts to serve her, ahhh this is everything Kira deserves. I love seeing Kira impress others, either correcting their misjudgments or shocking those who already hold her in high esteem.

Harlow may not interact with Kira that much but their blossoming uncle/father-daughter relationship is evident. He is as stubborn and protective as she is and through the smallest of his actions you can see how he wants a relationship with her, he wants to look after and cherish her. And the way he will not be swayed from his support of her totally won my heart! All of his council (except you know who) are easily loveable through their growing admiration and support of Kira, they care for her and want to protect her but won’t limit her through it, instead they help to heal her and learn how to harness her Tuann abilities and strength. All the semi silent support for Kira just gets you right in the heartstrings.

I loved the first book and I loved this one even more. We see more world building which is again done so well! We learn more about Tuann history and customs and about Kira’s own past, the time in the camps, the other children, the Curs and her mission. Every inch we gain leaves the reader eager for more. There are so many facets and nuances in the plot and world that are just unmatched elsewhere and a perfect 10/10 for me.

The story is unique and beautifully organic in how it develops. It has stolen the number one spot for sci-fi and I return to it over and over for comfort. 5 re-reads and counting (:

I can’t wait to see more of Kira and the Lu-ong!!!

T.A. White is one of my favorite writers, but here she has made another leap and is now truly a master of her craft. Character development, intricate world building, complex actions (not just bang bang bang like so many others do). The connection with ki, the planet etc. are simply amazing. To write intelligent science fiction one has to understand science (at least to the point where we are currently) and Ms. White managed to do that in a way hardly an sf writer manages. And of course, who does not fall in love with TinMan!
Every time I read a book of hers I get completely lost in its world, people and story. I can't wait for the next instalment in the series. One of the best books I've read in a while.
And, you do need to read the first book in the series, it's equally as good as this one.
