    Publisher Description

From Hugo award-winning, and New York Times bestselling co-author of the Expanse, Daniel Abraham, Age of Ash is the first book in an epic fantasy trilogy that unfolds within the walls of a single great city where every story matters —and the fate of the city is woven from them all.

“An atmospheric and fascinating tapestry, woven with skill and patience.” – Joe Abercrombie, New York Times bestselling author of A Little Hatred

Kithamar is a center of trade and wealth, an ancient city with a long, bloody history where countless thousands live and their stories unfold.

    This is Alys's.

When her brother is murdered, a petty thief from the slums of Longhill sets out to discover who killed him and why.  But the more she discovers about him, the more she learns about herself, and the truths she finds are more dangerous than knives.

Swept up in an intrigue as deep as the roots of Kithamar, where the secrets of the lowest born can sometimes topple thrones, the story Alys chooses will have the power to change everything.

"An outstanding series debut, which instantly hooks readers with dual mysteries . . . Readers will eagerly anticipate the sequel." – Publishers Weekly (starred review)

    PUBLISHERS WEEKLY DEC 6, 2021

Bestseller Abraham, coauthor of the Expanse space opera series, returns to epic fantasy in this outstanding series debut, which instantly hooks readers with dual mysteries. Kithamar has prided itself as "a free city, independent and proud and ruled by princes of its own rather than any distant king" for centuries. But the city's at a turning point when Prince Byrn a Sal dies after less than a year in power, the circumstances of his demise inviting speculation that he's been murdered, possibly by his daughter and heir, Elaine. Abraham smartly twines this political intrigue with the consequences of a violent death in the city's underworld; Alys, part of a successful pickpocket gang, ran afoul of a guard on the day of Byrn a Sal's coronation, and was rescued by her older brother, Darro, also a thief. Shortly after this misadventure, Darro's stabbed to death, leading Alys to fear it was a revenge killing by the guard, and thus, her fault. The impressively complex dynamics of Kithamar's society and rival races are delineated without clunky exposition, making for a smooth, immersive first foray into its streets. Readers will eagerly anticipate the sequel.

Who guards the gate between justice and mercy?

I’ve always loved Abraham’s books, until this one. “The Long Price Quartet” and “Dagger and the Coin” are favorites of mine. And of course his writings as James S.A. Corey with “The Expanse” are unreal greatness. But one hundred pages into this book and I kept thinking how uninteresting the story was — until suddenly it wasn’t.

As it turns out, those first one hundred pages were filled to the borders with notable non sequitur.

Granted, that is a long time for a story to take shape, but it’s not so much a slow start as a thousand threads that don’t really seem important. But then with one revelation all those strands become significant and make for a fantastic book.

The final 2/3 of the novel, I couldn’t put down. I didn’t like this book…

    I loved it.
