About the author

I’ve always loved mysteries, especially those involving Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Perhaps because Miss Marple reminds me of my aunts when I was growing up. But Agatha never told us much about Miss Marple's earlier life. While writing my own elderly super-sleuth series, I’m tracing her career from the start. As you’ll see, if you follow the Miss Riddell Cozy Mysteries series.
However, this is my Bio, not Miss Riddell’s, so here goes with all you need to know about me: After retiring, I became a writer and when I’m not feverishly typing on my laptop, you’ll find me running, cycling, walking, and taking wildlife photos wherever and whenever I can. My cozy mystery series begins in northern England because that was my home growing up and that’s also the home of so many great cozy mysteries. Stay with me though because Miss Riddell loves to travel as much as I do and the stories will take us to the many different places around the world I’ve lived in or visited.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2024As always I enjoy P.C. James' mysteries because he writes well and gives us a glimpse of cultural history and historical landscapes in England and Canada while murder and mayhem follow his characters. This book is colorfully written and we can visualize through our minds' eye how this one takes place. I like that. Everyone likes Ramsay, and now in this story, he lets us know he's having more frequent and real panic attacks which stem from losing his wife and children during the 2nd WW. In this caper which he's now sleuthing in many ways helps him heal from his past and his sidekick Eliza is quite the helper as well. I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the final book of this series coming out too!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2024What a delightful twisty story of murder and suspense! I'm so glad this series is available through Kindle Unlimited. My one sadness is that I was tempted into reading this mid-series book first, instead of reading these in order. Ramsey and his very expressive and helpful dog's interaction and conversations provided so much humor and fun, even though all the actual words and interpretation of Bracken's expressive eyes had to be done by Ramsey. Don't miss this fun series!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2024I'm preparing for a visit to the English countryside myself, so I'm enjoying the one man and his dog series. I would never expect to be out hiking and run across a dead body! Ramsay's experience as a detective kicks in, including the knowledge that he needs to make sure is he not blamed for what looks like a murder, even though the corpse had obviously been there since before his arrival in the area.
Ramsay establishes somewhat shaky relationships with the locals, many of whom distrust the outsider's motives. He finds a helper in the form of Eliza, a bored teenager working at her family's failing teashop. I, along with Ramsay, was uncomfortable when she makes some forward moves, which hint that she sees him as a boyfriend. I hope the author quashes this storyline in the next book and leaves her as an engaging apprentice. Also engaging is Ramsay's dog, Bracken, who acts as best friend and confidant to the lonely retired police detective as they seek to discover who was behind the murder.
I look forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2024I'm always a bit suspicious of spin-offs and whether they can stand on their own. But this series with retired inspector Ramsey is a fun read. Recovering by the seaside, Ramsey and his dog discover a decomposed body. As an ex-cop, of course, his curiosity is piqued. That is until a smuggling ring is exposed, and the local cop adds Ramsey's name to the suspect list. With the help of a local lass who insists on helping, Ramsey sets out to learn who is behind the crime. Suddenly, a peaceful retirement seems further on the horizon, and I look forward to more in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2024What a lovely cozy mystery! Ramsy and his dog make a great team. Smuggling! Murder!! Who done it? Could it be Ramsey’s old friends? Could it be the police? How about his girlfriend?
Yup, it could be any of them. But who are the red herrings and who is guilty? It’s hard to figure out, and a really good surprise when the ex-copper figures it all out.
This could be a great cozy mystery series: He's got a dog, a friend who can be his partner, a girl Friday, and the wilds of Yorkshire, Cumbria, Scotland.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2024If you like a mystery that keeps you guessing right through to the end, this book is for you.
I enjoyed all the suspects and motives.
I look forward to the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2024The second book in the series continues to develop the primary characters while introducing new and interesting ones. Although the plot centers on the mystery, there is a well-written juxtaposition between the generations involved. The author provides plenty of clues for readers to puzzle out the solution for themselves. A quick, enjoyable read. Highly recommended for fans of cozy mysteries!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2024Interesting guy and his dog. I like reading stories that have a canine sidekick. I liked it enough that I will read more in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A decomposing corpse spoils Ramsay's holiday
Another well-written novel from the author of the Miss Riddell cozy mysteries. The latest book is the second in a spin-off series featuring retired police inspector Tom Ramsay. This time a vacation by the sea for him and his faithful dog Bracken is interrupted by his discovery of a decomposing body. Ramsay sets out to investigate, not least because he himself becomes a suspect!
My favourite aspect of the book was the platonic and delightfully engaging relationship between the world-weary former detective and local girl Eliza. She takes a shine to him and uses her knowledge of the area and its people to help him solve the case.
I hope we'll see more of Eliza in future novels. I loved the dialogue interplay between the older retired cop and the bright, energetic nineteen-year-old girl. And, of course, there is a mystery for Ramsay to get to the bottom of. Which he does, no surprise, but only after some twists, turns, and false leads. A worthy, entertaining addition to the growing one man and his dog series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read
After being stepped down from the force, inspector Tom Ramsay embarks on a leisurely walking holiday with his dog. However, the hiking is cut short. When a body is found, questions are asked, gossip is heard, and evidence presents itself. What follows is a well-paced mystery with many twists and turns. The story unfolds through a range of unlikely possibilities and suspicious characters. I don’t usually buy murder mysteries – but I am converted – reading the book in one day! Treat yourself, put your feet up, and immerse yourself in such a well-written book.
