The Midnight Crow: Addiction. Revenge. Redemption. A Memoir Kindle Edition
Darkness, it is a place they call home
Troy’s a U.S. Army Vet and a lifelong addict.
Crow is his dangerous, womanizing alter-ego.
Rejected by his father and his first love, Troy sets off on a three-decade-long rampage that takes him from the dusty back roads of rural Minnesota to the bright lights and big cities of Las Vegas and L.A., and finally, the jungles of Puerto Rico.
Along the way, he experiences a nightmarish world of sex, drug-induced highs, and tragedy-filled lows. His dizzying descent into madness leads him to seek vengeance on the individuals responsible for his brutal assault: an attack that nearly kills him and sparks a series of explosive events that ultimately land him in prison.
Troy is a doomed man.
The shocking death of a loved one forces him to take a hard look at his life and his choices. Desperate to escape the eternal darkness, he seeks redemption in the light… but is it too late?

About the author

Known to my fans as Crow, "The Madman of Scribe" I am a Minnesota native, US Army veteran, lover of philosophy books, adrenaline fueled adventures, and horror movies. I have published four books, my harrowing memoir "The Midnight Crow" that deals with my struggles with substance abuse, violence, and multiple tragedies. My second book was "Crow Feathers" Poems from the Dark, a collection of macabre, dark poetry. I just finished "The Crow Diaries" a trilogy of graphic horror/crime thrillers with the incredibly dark killer-couple romance, Book One "Moonbaby" published on December 27th, 2024. The explosive, action-packed follow up, Volume Two, "Scarecrow" was released March 5th, 2025, and most recently, the mind-blowing Trilogy finale, "War Child" just went live in early May. My 18 + hyper-violent teen outlaw thriller, "Gypsy Leigh" is also now available.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2025This book got me hooked from the beginning. It's a very real and raw story of finding the light in the darkness. I laughed, cried, got angry, and heartbroken over Troy's life story. What an incredible journey he made to turn his life around. This is about bad choices and darkness, good choices and healing on the way to forgiveness. Highly recommend reading The Midnight Crow.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2024Definitely read the trigger warnings with this one because there are many. With that being said.
This Memoir touched my very soul and penetrated me deeply.
Although I have not experienced any of these myself. I have been along side loved ones who have battled many of these. I found this eye opening and heartfelt.
Raw, bold, graphic and truly vulnerable. I appreciated the author's accountability in his very personal life. He obviously felt like he needed to express himself and tell his story in his own way. Which is how every Memoir should be told.
I felt his pain of wanting to be a good father, son, etc but still giving into his desires and demons. We all have demons we face but some are harder then others and his are some of the most painful and extreme.
I did love each chapter starting with a quote. These two are my favorites "Light is easy to love, show me your Darkness..." R.Queen. and "The only person you are destined to become is the person you choose to be." Ralph Waldo Emerson.
My eyes filled with tears at each loss and each learning experience the author has to learn. His mother's poem, "Lost Boy", I took especially to heart since I've had loved ones die from overdoses.
I would say definitely give this one a read if you want to understand the inner thoughts of a struggling loved one.
Bravo Mr. Troy Poppler. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2024Real. Raw. Uncut! I am in complete awe of the level of bravery it took to write this book. If you know someone who has struggled with addictions throughout their lives and you want to know what goes on inside their head, this is the book to read. The darkness, helplessness, self-sabotaging behavior, sadness, and heartbreak all of it is delivered with a masterful writing style.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster ride you won't be able to put down.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2024I was surprised how this book affected me, I found that I have a lot in common with the author so it had me revisiting my own similar experiences. If you're a gen X you'll resonate with much of the evolution of Troy's life experience. Enjoy!! It's a trip to remember.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2024As expected, from the title, and description, this book is a lot to process. A mess of a life, leaning at last, into wholeness. The writing is raw and eloquent at the same time.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2024Get ready to laugh out loud... cry so hard you actually need a kleenex... and cringe... to the point of feeling the need to grab your rosary and recite a few Hail Mary's!!
At times, I had to literally force myself to take a break for a few mins... and a few mins is all you will allow yourself to take...it's just that intense of a roller coaster ride of a read! I found it hard to put the book down once I started... in fact the "forced" breaks and the occasional water / bathroom break was all I could do... I read it ALL in one session.
Intense, shocking and at times heart warming! Reads so much like a fiction thriller that you completely forget it is true... or maybe that's a good thing!! Definitely a MUST read!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024I am completely blown away by this memoir! Troy lays everything out for you to read. I feel like I know this man. I am so incredibly proud of his triumph over his demons as I'm writing this with tears running down my face! Addiction of any kind is no joke! I am just absolutely blown away! Way to go, Crow! Keep flying high and kicking all those demons away! Thank you for sharing your journey and I'm still amazed that you are still alive!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2025I can't wait to read this book!! I just got it today!! But first I must finish another of his books, Scarecrow!! Book two after Moonbaby

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw, gritty and intense…
TRIGGERS: Domestic Violence, Cheating, Drug & Alcohol Abuse, Explicit Sexual Content, Tragic Death and Grief.
I was intrigued to read this memoir, fascinated by the almost unbelievable life events that had occurred. Each chapter was something new, something dark and intense. There were moments which were incredibly difficult to read, parts that made me chuckle and some that shocked me. Not many books have made me physically cry, so kudos to Troy for making me shed a few tears as well!
Written in Troy’s typical gritty and raw tone, this memoir of starts as a struggle through addiction, the lure of revenge and the deceitful acts of the author to get what he wants, but after a tragic and heart-breaking event it transforms into a glimmer of hope for redemption and self-forgiveness.
Throughout the book Troy enriches the readers with the inclusion of relevant quotes, I was hooked into wanting to read more. There were the casual song references which is always a nice little bonus.
This book deserves 5-stars hands-down and I would definitely recommend others to read this incredibly well-written memoir.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unflinching, raw and hopeful
When a person uses the word "narcissist" to describe themselves, you know they've done the necessary heartwork to tell their story from a perspective of accountability. This is a painful story that is sensational without being unnecessarily vulgar, told with reasons not excuses. To put oneself so on display, for the sake of creating meaning from one's pain, is courageous. May this story impact many, many lives.
There is so much hope in these pages. When Poppler talks about his biggest regret, I got goosebumps - I anticipated the ending and was not disappointed.
I am going to buy a copy for a friend. This book may very well be the light she needs in her darkness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un-put-downable
I’d been meaning to order this book for a while, knowing from the reviews it would be good.
It arrived in the afternoon and I read it in one sitting, forgetting to feed the cats or even go to the loo.
So very far removed from my own life in middle England the writing transported me into another world, I felt as if I was right there experiencing everything myself.
The authors candid story telling, self reflection, tumultuous life and eventual redemption are addictive reading and I know already I need to consume it a second time.
Full of vivid descriptions and often beautiful prose; yes it’s full of hedonistic violence and self destruction but the authors heart and soul are intertwined throughout.
What got me the most? The sparrow.
I urge you to read this, as soon as possible. And my heartfelt thanks to the author for writing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rollercoaster must read of a book!
A binge-worthy book that you simply won't want to put down! From the moment I picked up this book I was immediately drawn in and wanted to know more. The best way to describe 'The Midnight Crow' would be that it is like getting on rollercoaster ride. You will experience a wide range of emotions! So prepare to strap yourself in!! Although different than Matthew Perry's Memoir, 'Friends, lovers and the big terrible thing' it does confront the effects of addiction on someone's life. Troy Poppler is exceptionally skilled and talented at painting a vivid picture with words of his past experiences and path to redemption and inner peace. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
DemiA rollercoaster must read of a book!
