All That's Left (The Carlington Twins Duet Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 260 ratings

Izzy Kavanagh’s life falls apart when her mother dies.

She is forced to move to the US and live with her absent father, who thinks money is the answer to every problem, and her twin brother Ethan, who she has barely spoken to in years.

She hates everything about the move. She hates that she’s forced to finish high school even though she’s already completed it in the UK. She hates that her father is controlling her and threatening to take away her inheritance if she doesn’t do as he says, even though he’s barely there and couldn’t care less about her. She hates that everybody already has an opinion on her based on her family name.

But what she hates above all else is having to see her brother every day in his perfect life where everybody worships him, because he chose this life over her and her mum.

And for that, she’ll never forgive him.

*** ARC-Spoliers *** This is the fourth book I read by Emma Doherty and I must say that I loved All That’s Left just as I have with her previous books. Doherty has a narrative technique that captures your interest by reading the first sentences of each book. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the way she manage to put the characters thoughts, emotions and expectation into words that makes you get totally absorbed with the story. This is not the typical cute love story even though you get some hints of that J no this book is so much more than that. The Carlington Twins lives change when their parents’ divorce, Izzy moves to the UK with their mum and Ethan stays in the US with their father. The separation also results that the bond between them take an abrupt change, Izzy getting mad at Ethan for choosing to stay with their father and not coming with her to the UK to live with their mother. A couple of years later their mother dies after struggling with cancer and Izzy is forces to move back to the states to live with her absent father, and Ethan whom she hasn’t forgotten for choosing their father over their mother. She is determent to make Ethan’s life as miserable as possible even going to the limit of him hating her, only then will she breath again.

4.5 stars. Izzy and Ethan, twins who are estranged and at odds with each other. I loved the fire and spite in Izzy, it makes her self-destruction so intense. But under that is so much pain and agony and self-loathing. Ethan is an amazing person and brother, but Izzy is burning the bridge before it can be repaired. They have such raw and gut wrenching interactions, obviously there had to have been love before for them to react so harshly the way that they do no matter how much Izzy denies it. Hardly any romance, but I was so riveted on the fractured brother and sister dynamic that it didn’t matter, especially with Izzy adjusting to her new surroundings. I don’t know if rock bottom is low enough for Izzy, but she and Ethan deserve better than being alone individually without family.

This was such a great read. I read it in one sitting, no skimming, no slow points. I was completely caught up in the story and what was happening. Can’t wait to start the second book and see what happens.

I really enjoy this author and her books. I'll be getting book 2 when it comes out in a couple weeks. This author has done a good job portraying all the emotions someone goes through when they're dealing with grief.
My only critique is the editing. She used the word "stood" 25 times and rarely was it used correctly. I know this author was born in the UK but if she is going to write books set it America then she should at least get an editor who is familiar with American lingo.

Third book I've read by this author and the third book I've loved! She just gets it right. Every time. Stayed up all night reading. Could not put it down.

This book blew me away, I didn't expect all the angst and heartbreak between these siblings. You just felt so bad for Izzy and how she's dealing with her pain. Some parts it hurt to read what she was doing or dealing with her emotions. Ethan kinda surprised me and didn't know what he really felt until the end.

I loved this one and can't wait to read the second part of this duet!

Found this book purely by accident and I have to commend the author on a really well written story. The narrative is heartbreaking but original and will keep you enthralled from start to finish. I don’t give spoilers but I guarantee you will love Ethan and possibly loathe Izzy. Such a good read.
