A scarred soldier. A dutiful daughter. An arranged marriage in an empty house with its own stories to tell.

Lady Hannah Blackburn has always been an obedient daughter, doing exactly as she is told. So when her sister runs off with a footman and her parents decide on a hastily arranged marriage for her, she agrees. But when she kisses a stranger in the library on the same night her fiancée has a tryst of his own, everything changes.

Lord Edmund Marshville, a former soldier and the second son of an earl, has one desire — to be left alone with his scars and his memories in his remote Hollingswood Estate. When he gives in to his mother’s plea to attend his brother’s engagement party, he doesn’t realize how life altering one night can be.

When Hannah and Edmund return to Hollingswood after their arranged marriage, it doesn’t seem like they will ever be connected in anything more than name, until they begin to uncover secrets hidden for decades. Will attempting to reunite lost loves help them find their way to each other, or do the fates have other plans for them?

I have always loved reading Ellie St. Clair’s books, and this one did not disappoint. The fact that it is a Gothic romance simply enhances everything about it - the setting, the believable characters, and the intriguing storyline are fit together perfectly with the story told in such a way as to make me feel as I was right there with them. Can’t wait to read more of Ms St. Clair’s Gothic Regency romances!

I’m a huge fan of historical romance and this really hit the spot for me. The book was succinct but still able to develop characters and experience a brief cozy bond with them. I appreciate a nice quick feel good read.

This beauty and beast story is intriguing and could have been a fantastic read, however the writing is weak and often pulled me out if the moment with poor character dialogue. The overuse of filler words to bridge non action to action creates long passages that tells rather than shows the reader what is happening. The three star rating is for the premise of the story. It's a good story, and would have been a fantastic story had it been fleshed out a bit more.

Hannah marries Edmund, the scared younger brother of her intended when he is caught with another woman.

A former soldier and POW, Edmund has become a recluse. Hannah is a welcome addition to his life.

This story takes me back to the gothic romances of my youth - A scared recluse, an almost too good to be true heroine, a remote haunted mansion, and two lovers who discover they're perfect for each other.

I never thought would enjoy the coziness of a gothic romance novella. He was incredibly damaged and she was in awe with him. Felt like star crossed lovers, my favorite kind of love

Hannah has always been a biddable daughter and when they told her they had arranged a marriage for her she went along with it. At her engagement ball she took a few minutes to herself in the library and came upon a man in the shadows. When he told her she did not need to marry her fiancé she wanted to know why. As she drew nearer to the man he couldn’t help himself and he kissed her. When she heard a scream she left and found her fiancé with his pants down with another woman’s dress did a lot of other people. To save her reputation even though she did not do anything wrong and her parents they decided she would marry her fiancé’s brother Edmund.
When Edmund came home from the war broken and severely injured all he wanted to do is live alone at his estate. When his father basically blackmails him into marrying his brother fiancé’s he agrees. Hannah not realizing Edmund was the person she kissed in the library.
As they arrive at his estate she realizes not only his the house haunted by a good spirit but her husband is also haunted from the war. Can these too get together not only to make there marriage work but also bring the spirits peace. A wonderful novella with a beautiful ending.

I picked this up for scarred rep as the hero has scars on his face from war. He has to marry Hannah when his brother makes a mess of their betrothal by cheating on his fiancee. His father declares that Edmund will marry Hannah instead as their family needs her dowry to settle debts and he will sell the place Edmund has found solace in. Thinking he can marry her and not interact with her, he realizes different when she challenges him and starts to make Hollingsworth a place with happiness and light. The plot was predictable and sometimes the dialogue was modern. I was unsure what gothic meant and thought it related to the house having ghosts and a history to it.

This was not a clean story and did have sex scenes in but honestly i never noticed as they were so sweet.Had the gothic mystery that I love to read to escape to on a miserable dark afternoon.Loved the characters which is important to me otherwise. i wouldn’t be able to engage myself if they’re irritated me and I do like this Author style of writing and will be one of my favourites.
Nothing to dislike and a truly lovely light read.
This is all my own personal opinion on KU.

3.0 out of 5 stars A ok read for me
Reviewed in India on March 4, 2022
The premise of the book was great - scarred hero / haunted manor / marriage of convenience.

However , this would have been better as a full length novel versus a novella as the elements of the story are too fast paced and the ending is reached like it has to be wrapped as soon as possible.

Steam Level : open love making scenes
