Lance is in a desperate need to get from Atlanta to Kansas where his parents live on a farm, He just learned that his father is in the hospital in critical condition and he has to get home, and before he can get there all he'll has broken loose by an EMP strike that has nearly shut down the whole country. Without power nothing is working. Planes have fallen out of the skies. He manages to get a hold of a truck and starts to Kansas! Meanwhile, in another part of the south a young woman by the name of Sophie has been held captive by two men and a woman, since she was 10 years old, and all she wants to do is get away and go back to her parents. They keep her chained and locked up and guarded at all times, and have sold her to someone for a "big payday"! So we, as readers, come along for their two different stories. It will keep you reading!

Great realisatic read. Believable characters with a realistic storyline which is a breath of fresh air. Sometimes EMP reads stretch the imagination to the breaking point. Not so with downfall. This is one continuous series of our protagonists making one bad decision after another and not realizing they're the problem. There is nothing that drew me to either character. The author doesn't explore who they are, or why they are where they are in life. In the final analysis, I just couldn't get myself to care for them. I quit two thirds of the way through book 1.
Writing is amateurish at best with elementary school dialog and descriptions.

Don't waste time with this one. Get the "Edge of Collapse" series. Much better.

These are box cut. The perfect Mr. and Mrs. which are both the who’s who’s of their jobs. The woman also takes perfect care of the man. Needs to learn to develop characters instead of using cookie cutter characters.

Having read and enjoyed other books by Mr Shupert, I was not disappointed in this new book. Downfall takes us to another world where a devastating CME strike plunges the world into darkness. Lance and Sophie are great characters with very different backgrounds, which makes the story very interesting with plenty of danger and drama. Each chapter had me riveted and I can't wait to read what develops in the next book
