Reviewers say:
"I loved the heroine, she is fearless, smart and kind."
"Exciting and vivid sci fi/fantasy/adventure, grounded in real emotions and fully realized characters."
"Superb Story and Fab World Building!"
"I enjoyed this story. The world building made me use my imagination and it was truly beautiful. I traveled with Violet Hunter as she completed each mission for her Grand Master, the Griffin, while trying to discover his motives for the missions. Each mission, more dangerous than the last, helped me understand the Griffin more and the dangers of greed and the ambitions of others.
Each planet, species, Grand Masters, and other characters brought a special charm to the story. There wasn't one character that I was on the fence with how they made me feel... I either loved them or hated them. The romance felt a bit rushed and took a bit to get to, but once the Griffin let Violet see him for the first time, it was lovely. I loved seeing the chemistry between Violet and the Griffin transform over time.
If you like Sci-Fi and romance, this book's for you!" - TheRomanceReviews.com

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseExciting and vivid sci fi/fantasy/adventure, grounded in real emotions and fully realized characters, Aurora Springer's GRAND MASTER'S PAWN (Book One of the Grand Master's Trilogy) is a wonderful read, even for those who might not usually read novels in this genre. (I'm one of those, and I truly enjoyed it!) Give yourself a treat and join courageous, psychically bonded lovers Violet and Athanor on their amazing adventures!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseExcellent read. The storyline and characters were good. It was a good story that kept my interest and the hints of what was coming in the future piqued my curiosity about what was coming next.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseViolet Hunter caught my interest with her uniqueness and curiosity early on. I wasn't certain what to expect, but I was quickly drawn in to the mystery and adventure. Violet is a bit naïve and unprepared when she becomes a Grand Master's Pawn and you know that's going to mean trouble. Her doubts about her Grand Master mean even more complications and then there's a romance . . . no Spoilers here. It's an adventure across the galaxy, filled with complex and unique worlds. Plus, there are dragons!
I enjoyed the story and look forward to the rest of the trilogy!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe first 70% of this book was a 4 star read for me and would have been 5 star if the author had supplied more background detail on the Grand Masters and a bit more about the character of the heroine. Still, I enjoyed reading about the missions/adventures Violet is sent on and how she deals with difficult situations (admirably). But then the book takes this abrupt turn for the worse in characterization and dialogue when Violet meets her Grand Master in person - I felt like I was reading about a couple of elementary school kids with how they talked to one another - puppy love. And sheesh, Violet finds herself in love with her Grand Master when she's had no meaningful dialogue as a peer (prior dialogue was his giving orders and at one time physically abusing her).
I saw another reviewer who thought the series got better with the next books, but I didn't find this so. Book 2 of this series was a DNF for me because so much of it revolves around the relationship between the Grand Master and Violet and that is where the writing is weakest. Romance/relationships are cornily written in this series and often I found the dialogue to be "huh?" When the writing is strictly on the adventure, the world building is interesting and the heroine you want to continue to get to know, but unfortunately she develops into this simpering, love sick little girl.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFor various reasons, I ended up waiting a long time to start this series, and I can tell you that it's well worth it. Wish I'd read it sooner!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2015Format: KindleVerified Purchase4.5 stars with series improving as it goes along.
This first one was really good as long as there was some mystery. But as soon as she gets to know her Grand Master, it becomes the usual trite magic vs. magic battle, which is un-writable. Why does anyone even try?
(added after reading entire series) - My review of 2nd book in series is better, and 3rd is off-scale. One of the reasons is because indeed the author rises to this challenge and catches the villain in a clever trap of her own making.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseViolet Hunter is selected as a Pawn by a Grand Master. She is attempting to discover more about him as she completes quests for him. She is a strong empath, which is forbidden, so she keeps her powers shielded. Her teacher Tingu has asked her to help determine if one or more of the 12 Grand Masters may be working against the Galactic government.
Good plotting and characterization. This is the second in a series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story is good, the author knowledgeable. But the writing is full of repetition, extra explanation, repeated name of characters where him/her would do, and telling and then showing, which all interrupt the flow of the story. Needs a good editing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twelve Masters
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe galaxy is dominated by twelve beings with extremely powerful psionic powers. Would you serve one of them? Violet, the heroine of GMP, is chosen to be the pawn of a grand master, doing his bidding without ever meeting him. She, however, has hidden psi powers of her own, and her own agenda. Aurora Springer paints an intriguing picture of a universe where matter transmitters called portals are the key to galactic trade and travel – they are breaking down, and causing severe damage to the galactic economy. Violet suspects her hidden grand master is involved.
GMP is tagged as a romance, so the burgeoning relationship between Violet and one of the male characters is a major element of the plot (and it isn't difficult to work out the identity of the man). But there is enough else in the plot to keep it interesting. Don't expect answers to all the questions raised, though – there is a second book due for release shortly!

3.0 out of 5 stars A promising plot line
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA reasonable start to a trilogy. The characters are in place but need more development. The relationship between Master and pawn is very weak and needs more balance ie the pawn needs to be much stronger for this to work sensibility. The romantic dialog should be removed completely it is disturbingly immature, if not then it must be greatly improved.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wow .... Truly bored ...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe blurb on this series of books got me really excited so I bought the first book. It starts off well with good world building but the story is told like a news feed without emotion, or character and is very stoic . The main character is female Violet Hunter and seems to be a strong character. The Grand Master she serves abuses her physically. However she seems to get on famously with all the different aliens she meets .... Strange but true. After 48% of reading this book I gave up.... The writing is so immature it would probably suit someone who loves 'men in black '.
