A successful and unique collection!
I pre-ordered Amor Actually when @prisoliveras posted about it last month. It sounded perfect: diverse romance authors and a title related to one of my favorite Christmas movies.
I’m embarrassed to say that it took me until the second to last story to realize that each author’s contribution was specifically connected to one of the stories in the movie Love, Actually. Once I figured it out, I looked back and saw the similarities. My mind was blown, even if I was a bit slow on the uptake.
The different ways the authors reimagined the plot lines was really cool to see. The stories covered a very wide range; some were much steamier than I usually prefer to read. But that just means there’s something in this collection for every romance reader.
I was moved by the issues explored in several of the stories, and all of selections delivered Christmas romance, albeit in very different ways. Not surprisingly, I loved Priscilla Oliveras’ contribution, “Meet Me Under the Mistletoe.” She is great at writing romantic tension, and both of her characters were so likable and sympathetic. I have read several of her books and enjoyed them.
The other authors in the collection were new to me. A standout was Zoey Castile’s “Love in Spanglish”; the writing style struck me with its eloquence. I looked up her bio only to discover that as Zoraida Córdova she wrote The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, a popular new release this year. I will be adding that to my 2022 TBR because I would like to read more from her.
All of the stories celebrated the joys of connections and relationships. The focus was on romance but also on friendship, family, and cultural traditions. Interestingly, even in such short stories, I felt I got to know the characters and they had more depth than the characters in the longer Christmas romances I’ve read this year. Even if some of the stories were way out of my normal comfort zone, this collection will probably be the standout of all my 2021 Christmas romance reads because it was unique and actually captured my emotions.
