Instincts and Impostors: Amplifier, Book 5
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
I’d led a deadly squad of genetically enhanced, uber-powerful magic wielders through life-threatening missions multiple times in the first 21 years of my life.
When marked for death, I’d led the escape from those who’d bred us, controlled us. Utterly annihilating the Collective’s compound, and destroying everything that had gone into creating us—the Five. I found Christopher and Paisley a home, a safe haven. Then, despite being bred and raised to be a sociopath, I learned to love. And even some of the nuances of the act of loving. To protect the life I’d built, I’d faced off against black witches. Survived demons. Held powerful dark sorcerers at bay. I had thwarted an immortal entity.
And despite all that, I was nervous. About attending a coven retreat. About revealing any part of myself to witches of the light. Witches who could hurt me without a lick of magic or a single sharp blade. Just by denying Opal the future she wanted. Because of me. And everything I could no longer hide. Or hide from.
Instincts and Impostors is the fifth book in the Amplifier Series, which is set in the same universe as the Dowser, Oracle, Reconstructionist, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series.

Does not matter if they include sex or not (it does not overwhelm the story) The stories, characters (both good, gray and evil) are well written and I can feel their emotions while I am reading. I know this will be a world I visit again and again.
Thank you Meghan Diana Doidge for sharing it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2022This is one of my favorite group of characters in this world.
With or without the sex, the story and emotions are great and that is what I read for. All of the stories I have read by this author, fill my needs: Story, interesting characters I would like to know, main characters I like and evil that makes sense to me, and endings that make me want to read more, not roll in a ball of anger. Meghan Ciana Dodge gives me stories with hope and love and I thank her for that.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2025I’ve been reading in this universe since the very beginning, over 10 years ago, and I just love the whole adept universe that Ms. Doidge has created.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2023I took a little while between books in this series before coming back to book #5. I’ve read all the other books in this world as they overlap timeline-wise, but it was still kind of jarring to join back in with the very… robotic (?) Emma. I eventually got over the learning curve here, but it definitely took a little while.
Emma is taking Opal to a cover retreat at the start of the book. While it’s only supposed to be them going with their fellow-witch-ish friend, it ends up bringing along most if not all the characters in some form or another. Also, if you’re a reader of the other series, we get lots of familiar faces for the coven. What should be a somewhat simple matter is made into a big ordeal that starts with a strange witch showing up with a raven. It snowballs from there, involving Paisley, Aiden, and Emma as they band together to save their little family.
I really did enjoy how much Emma manages to pull through as a leader when all her newfound emotions are rebelling. The way that she almost instantly makes really difficult decision is crazy, but fun to watch. I was on the edge of my seat until the end of this book, hoping for the best and generally being rewarded for it. You’ve done it again - I’m back on Team Emma.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2022This story was more than I could've imagined. All of the characters in the adept universe are stand alone. They are like no others and those that we have met in this series aren't either. The growth, love and commitment that seeps out of the pages keeps you wanting more. I laughed, got upset, awwwed, and floored by the ending. I never expected it but there it was. The uniqueness of the characters will make you want to read the stories again and again because you'll never get enough of how well they are written and the adventure they give you. Another great book from a very very talented storyteller.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2023Emma and Aiden are going to a witch retreat because so that Opal will be accepted into the Godfrey Coven which is the family of the Dozer. While there they they come across one of the employees from the compound that was built to hold the five and she is able to kidnap Paisley who then kidnaps Opal. A great story that I think will end with all the characters working together and I can't wait.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2022Another brilliant book from one of my favorite authors! It only seems short because I always kick any other book I'm reading to the curb until I can finish another of Meghan's books. No spoilers here, BUT PEARL IS AMAZING! We haven't seen Pearl in action for a long while, and it warmed me to see her. Of course, Emma and Aiden and Christopher and Opal didn't disappoint, but I was worried about Paisley there for a while.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2022Meghan never fails to satisfy. She has the ability, through her words, to make you genuinely care for the characters she creates. I know I will not be disappointed when she publishes a new book. To those who have not yet discovered her, I highly recommend! But you'll want to read her books in the order she intended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid emotional investment
There are favourite books and favourite characters, and then there is family. The characters in this book have become the latter. Strength of character is what really drives this novel; it has a solid plot and is a great addition to the overall series but what I found most compelling was how it never felt like I was reading a book. It felt like my dearest friend was telling me about everything that’s happened lately and even when I wanted to argue about the decisions they were making, I never once questioned that the decisions were spot on for that person. It’s a seamless narrative that sucks you in and nothing jars you out of it. I suffered several mild heart attacks, figuratively speaking, went through half a box of Kleenex, quite literally, and needed a few minutes to decompress when it was over. It was just so, so good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth 5 stars as usual for this author
As always the characters move forward and learn from their experiences. Not just static personalities. Like to see that particularly in a series.
