Amusing Miss Austen: A Pride and Prejudice Variation (Miss Austen Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Her love life is inspiring a story…
When Felicity Blackburn meets Max Fitzroy at the Steventon assembly she’s not impressed. While his friend Evan Pringle charms the ladies, including her sister Harriet, stony-faced Max refuses to dance and doesn't have a good word to say about anyone, least of all high-spirited Felicity.
Felicity resolves to avoid grumpy Max, yet after several run-ins, including an embarrassing encounter at the local lake, she can’t seem to stop thinking about him.
Despite their ensuing attraction (and Max’s attempts at flirting), Felicity grows ever more confused about his intentions. She also has another problem - an insidious clergyman cousin who's invited himself to stay and insists on wooing her with terrible poetry.
Fortunately, her good friend Jane Austen is on hand with kind and sympathetic counsel. But when Felicity stumbles upon a story Jane’s secretly writing, she recognises herself as one of the main characters!
With her drama fueling Jane’s creativity, Max allegedly in pursuit of another woman, and a proposal hanging over her head from decidedly the WRONG man - can Felicity sort out the romantic tangle before it’s too late? Or will Jane’s story have a happier ending than her own?
A gorgeously funny, lighthearted Pride and Prejudice variation that reimagines the events that prompted Jane Austen to write Lizzy and Mr Darcy’s story.
If you like feisty heroines, brooding heroes and laugh out loud humour, you’ll fall in love with this heartwarming historical romcom - fan fluttering twists and turns guaranteed. Grab your copy today!

A lovely and romantic story and Jane Austen is in it too!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2025Slow start, but as you really get into it, a great adventure to indicate where Jane came up with her story of Pride and Prejudice. Only this has more outlandish behavior. Oh so entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024I'd round it up to 4.5. As an avid JAFF reader, my favorites are the fun and witty ones, which are the minority of JAFF put out there, with authors like Jeannie Peneaux and Grace Gibson being among my favorites. I was pleased to find this one (not well advertised on Amazon) and it is so much fun! The voice of the main character was a hoot, and the idea of making a story that inspired Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (fictionally of course) was very clever. No grammar or spelling issues. My only critique is the aspect related to the "Mr. Collins" like character being so insistent on marrying the main character after her rejection several times just didn't quite work well IMO, but not enough to ruin the rest of the book. Highly recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024Amusing Miss Austen by Angela Pearse is a charming and delightful re-imagining of Pride and Prejudice. It was such fun to find out that Jane Austen herself was a character in the book, who was secretly using the events in the life of sisters Felicity and Harriet Blackburn as a basis for her manuscript. Felicity is charming, lively and witty as Elizabeth Bennet and Max Fitzroy is as haughty and aloof as Mr Darcy. The book is funny and sweet, the romance between Felicity and Max is swoonworthy. There are hilarious moments that have to do with a drunken marriage proposal and a stuborn horse named George. I highly recommend this book and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

Jane Austen fans will love this, but so will anyone else who likes a sweet romance filled with sweet friendships and loveable characters.
I loved this book. I wouldn't call myself a huge Jane Austen fan. So, the fact that this book is a variation of Pride and Prejudice means nothing to me, but I did absolutely fall in love with this book.
Felicity, Fliss, is good friends with the one and only Jane Austen - who happens to be writing a novel - and after going to a country dance, they meet Mr. Fitzroy, the incredibly beautiful but arrogant friend of the new eligible bachelor in town, Mr. Pringle. Anyone can see they are instantly attracted to one another, except, of course, Felicity, who is too innocent to know.
I loved the innocence and pure romance of it all. I also loved each of the characters, the descriptions of everything, and the overall storytelling. Jane Austen fan or not, I really do recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2024"Amusing Miss Austen" is a fun and charming read from author Angela Pearse! This re-imagination of "Pride and Prejudice" is delightful, refreshing, and so much fun! I loved meeting and getting to know Felicity and Max and seeing Jane Austen as a character in this story. This is a story that has so many sweet, swoony, witty, and amusing moments! This is a book that will keep you turning the pages. The speed of the plot is perfect, the writing style is smooth, the characters are lovable and familiar yet unique in their own wonderful ways, and the romance is sweet and swoony with the perfect level of mischief! This book had me smiling as I was reading. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It is just so much fun. Read this book! Especially if you are an Austen fan. Another thing I loved were all of the little references to Austen's stories. 5 stars! Ahhh I love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2024What's not to adore about this adorable regency tale featuring the amazing Pride & Prejudice? What if Jane Austen were inspired by the lives of her friends to create her classic tale? Felicity is a young woman full of spirit and life who wants nothing more than to be married a man she loves. When she meets the intimidating Mr. Fitzroy, she's immediately struck by his handsomeness and arrogance. Playing off the tale itself and some of the adaptations, Angela Pearse weaves and entertaining story about overcoming those dreadful first impressions and finding love where you least expect it.
I had never read anything by this author before, but I found the book very entertaining and enjoyable. I can't wait to read more of her works! This is a definitely a book to pick up if you love Jane Austen!! She does the classic novel justice.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2024I loved this fun Regency romp by Angela Pearse which is a kind of re-imagining of Pride and Prejudice from the viewpoint of Jane’s best friend Felicity. Felicity and her sister, Harriet have some of the same problems that show up in Jane’s budding novel. Felicity, who is a bit of a wild child has been frolicking with a farm boy as the novel begins even though he is not marriage material. When a handsome new neighbor moves into a nearby estate both Felicity and Harriet, are excited to meet the eligible young man. He also happens to have a very dour friend who is either arrogant or perhaps shy. Felicity finds herself both attracted and annoyed by the stern Mr. Fitzroy. Of course, Felicity tells all the details of her life to her friend Jane Austen not realizing some of it may show up in a novel one day.
Felicity’s life has similarities to the fictional l Lizzie Bennett but there are enough humorous and different plot twists and turns to keep the novel following its own quirky storyline and at the same time provide fun fodder for Jane’s book.
Since I am a lover of all things Jane Austen, I thoroughly enjoyed this fun and creative novel. I have read a number of re-imagined Pride and Prejudice stories but I think this might be one of my favorites. Historical purists of the genre might take issue with certain elements, but there was nothing in the writing that jarred me out of the fun world Angela created for her characters. The book was mostly clean with a bit of sauce to it, but nothing that would give it more than a PG13 rating. (The wet shirt moment went a tad further than Colin Firth’s for example…) I highly recommend the book.
I received an advance reader copy of this book for free, and I am voluntarily offering my honest opinion.

In short: read this. It’s funny, feel-good, and totally fabulous. Jane would be amused and so was I!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amusing Miss Austen
At the Steventon Assembly Felicity Blackburn meets for the first time the handsome but grumpy Max Fitzroy who is staying at his friend's Evan Pringle. Unfortunately her first impression is not the best, she overhears the gentleman insulting her, in addition he refuses to dance with her.
Felicity now tries to avoid Max but they accidentally meet quite often, causing Felicity to think constantly about him, even as his actions leave her further confused. But Max is not the only problem Felicity needs to face: her cousin, the clergyman, is determined to leave Steventon as an engaged man - his intended bride is Felicity.
She now tries to avoid her cousin and secretly searches for the nearness of Mr Stonyface Max. Fortunately she can count on the help of her best friend, Jane Austen. But then Felicity discovers that Jane used her confusing love life as inspiration for a love story she secretly writes. Will Felicity, like in a novel, find her happily ever after? Will she be able to win Max's heart or will her cousin, in the end and against her wishes, claim her as his fiancée? And what about Jane's novel?
Amusing Miss Austen is a very well written story by the author Angela Pearse. I had so many laughing out loud moments and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The book tells the story of Felicity Blackburn and her way of finding love. Certainly, that isn't something unusual, but Felicity's best friend, the daughter of the local parson, is Miss Jane Austen. And Jane uses Felicity's luck and misfortune as an inspiration for her novel, later called First impressions. And I say: yes, it really could have occurred that Jane Austen was writing her famous story in exactly that way. Everything fits and the relationship of Felicity and Max has astonishing parallels to the story of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy (naturally Jane modified everything a bit to not embarrass her friend 😉). It was very well done and I enjoyed the thought of Jane immortalising her friend in that way in a novel very much.
I like the heroine Felicity very much. She is a lovable, witty person full of life and love. A person who deserves to find happiness and certainly not to be tied to a relatively unknown cousin. I am so glad that, in the end, she is able to secure her happiness. I was happy with her and suffered with her.
I also enjoy it very much to be witness to Jane Austen's very day life and witness her being inspired by her friend's love life and eventually writing a novel about it. That brings me the famous writer Jane Austen a little bit closer.
Max and Felicity and their history with one another shows parallels to Elizabeth and Darcy characters and history in Pride and prejudice, but Max and Felicity are both not as stubborn or prejudiced as Darcy and Elizabeth and there love stories is definitely easier solved and contains more witty moments (there is a really funny scene at the lake and the proposal was rather unique). I like them and relationships very much and enjoyed being witness to their life.
There are no real villains in the story (no Wickhams or Lady Catherines) only some people who stand in their way but for believable reasons, neither of them was really evil.
If you like to know what could have inspired Jane Austen to write her famous story of Pride and prejudice and if Felicity and Max will find happiness together despite their less than ideal beginning you should definitely read this book.
I highly recommend it.
I received a free copy of the book via book sirens and am voluntarily leaving a review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and well woven
Pride and Prejudice has been redone many times but this tale reads as a side story to Jane Austen's life.
The complications are realistic and emotional and this tale has all the feels of a Jane Austen book.
Well researched with a HEA, this book feels complete as a stand alone.
If you are a Jane Austen or Regency Novel fan, would recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amusing and delightful
Sisters who must get married to avoid poverty, a dull clergyman cousin – sounds a familiar story? Well of course – this, after all, is the situation that inspired Felicity's friend Jane Austen to write her best-loved novel ... I look forward to meeting these characters again. Felicity is a delightful heroine and Max is as dashing and (at first) as taciturn as one hopes for in a Regency hero, and one can never have too much of Miss Austen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Read!
This was delightful! I was eagerly anticipating this book and it didn't disappoint.
In this book, we discover the real people and inspiration behind Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (well, in the writer's eyes). Felicity and Max were adorable. Honestly, I think I loved Max more than Mr. Darcy himself, with his stoic brooding, witty quips, and drunken declarations. And Felicity was an unusually adventurous, modern young lady for the late 1700's. But I really enjoyed the slightly more modern-day attitudes towards sexual activities and women's liberations.
Honestly, one of my favourite reads all year.
