Clara and the Case of the Maybe Baby (Crime & Matrimony Book 1) Kindle Edition
Falling in love could risk more than just their hearts.
Women aren’t supposed to fight crime, not in 1872. But solving mysteries is all Clara has ever wanted to do, so when the Davenport Detective Agency advertises for new female recruits, she jumps at the chance.
Not even having to marry her training agent for the duration of her first case fazes her, although Tobias Campbell is overly serious and a little unusual. Clara is exceptionally good with people. She’ll draw him out before the case is over.
But when the search for a missing woman forces them into the dangerous underworld of New York’s notorious gangs, Clara and Tobias must learn to rely on each other.
Because it’s not only their hearts that are on the line. It’s their lives.
**Please note: Clara and the Case of the Maybe Baby was previously published as An Agent for Clara (The Pinkerton Matchmaker series).

About the author

In her mind, Nerys Leigh lives in a fairytale castle with turrets and secret passageways and sentient brooms that do the cleaning for her. In reality, she lives in a small Victorian house (with no original features) and her broom is resolutely inanimate, no matter how much she sings to it. But reality is overrated anyway.
She writes books that are heart-warming, funny, exciting, and above all, wildly romantic, because that’s what she likes to read. And she adores a blissfully happy ending.
She’s British, but she suspects she might be slowly turning into an American while she writes her stories set in the Wild West filled with mail order brides and railroads and cowboys. Sometimes she puts a U into a word, just to see if she still can. She can’t do the accent though.
Nerys can be found lurking at nerysleigh.com, and if you’d like a free book about a handsome blacksmith, sign up for her newsletter at http://eepurl.com/b-Gj2T and she’ll send you one, because she’s nice like that.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a good book. Were it possible, I’d give it 6 stars.
On the other hand, you might not like it. So, before you lay down your hard-earned money on my say-so, let me apprise you of its shortcomings…
First, Miss Leigh markets this story as an Historical Romance; it is not. This is a Love Story! Having read other tales by this author, I expected this bait and switch; I was not disappointed! But, if this is your first Nerys Leigh book and you come seeking the hackneyed “Dislike / Puppy Love / Lust / Undying Commitment / Major Screw Up / Break Up / Misery / Reconciliation / Happily Ever After” plot of a Standard Romance Novel, you might be!
Once Clara selects Toby, she’s got his back — period! When she takes the lead, Toby’s got her covered — period. Indeed, in all Miss Leigh’s books, when her characters face uncertainty about their relationship, they face it as mature women and men would, instead of running away or lashing out like some tricenarian version of those hormonal brats you gratefully left behind in Middle School. Most times, uncertainty comes, as in real life, from external factors — not puerile behavior arising within the couple.
Second, if you have your own Mature, Committed, Adult Relationship with someone, beware: books like “An Agent for Clara” can stress that. My Bride, for example, takes a dim view of having her sleep disturbed by the light from my eReader, much less the chuckles (male version of a giggle) that occasionally get out of hand.
Third, while there is romance, Miss Leigh encapsulates it inside of a good story! You get to follow a couple of grown-ups as they work out how best to face life together. With the focus on their investigation instead of worrying about how Clara and Toby will salvage their juvenile relationship, you get to follow a couple of grown-ups as they learn to face life together. How is that bad? Well, if you actually expect to have dinner ready on time, or really want to get off at your own bus stop, you may need to set alarms on your eReader for periodic reality checks.
Finally, reading books like this will diminish your enjoyment of standard Romance Fare.
You’ve been warned!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis Pinkerton book has a little bit more intensity then it's predecessors! I thoroughly enjoyed and their was a higher level of mystery and danger! Anytime you add gangs into the storyline, it gives the opportunity and the writer did not miss it! Well written, cute banter, and Toby and Clara have the cutest love story! Love that they choose to fight together and deal with relationship challenges maturely! Fast, enjoyable, clean, romantic mysterious read!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a great detective story. The investigation was awesome. The charecters were interesting. A crime solved. Insecurity overcome with perseverance and love found. Very rich with facts, and details of period. A very interesting read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is definitely near the top of my list for the Matchmaker series so far. I am reading in order . I enjoyed the characters and the plot very much. Clara and Tobias (Toby) don't start with much of a chance to stay married after the case, but their personalities mesh very well. The plot twists are nice and the ending left me.with a smile. I would like to see these characters again which says a lot about how well the story is written.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis installment of the Pinkerton Matchmaker series was hilarious and suspenseful. The author's writing style drew me into the story right from the beginning. The main characters had an interesting dynamic between them and the case Clara and Tobias were involved with was plausible and their sleuthing skills believable. I hated to put the book down. I highly recommend this book and anything else Nerys Leigh writes. I am never disappointed by her writing!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA unique Pinkerton story. Clara has always loved to solve mysteries so she arrived at the Pinkerton Agency with high expectations. She is a bit concerned with the Agent she is paired with especially after running into him and his maggots prior to meeting her new husband! Clara is sweet, friendly and smart but Tobias although very smart is very somber and not very friendly.
Once they are on assignment together in New York, they find themselves having to depend on each other while looking for a woman and baby and avoiding a street gang.
Will Clara really follow the orders Tobias hands out and become an Agent? Can two such different people actually find common ground to move forward on?
